1 Os homens de Efraim foram convocados para a batalha; dirigiram-se para Zafom e disseram a Jefté: "Por que você foi lutar contra os amonitas sem nos chamar para irmos juntos? Vamos queimar a sua casa e você junto! "2 Jefté respondeu: "Eu e meu povo estávamos envolvidos numa grande contenda com os amonitas, e, embora eu os tenha chamado, vocês não me livraram das mãos deles.3 Quando vi que vocês não ajudariam, arrisquei a vida e fui lutar contra os amonitas, e o Senhor me deu a vitória sobre eles. E, por que vocês vieram para cá hoje? Para lutar contra mim? "4 Jefté reuniu então todos os homens de Gileade e lutou contra Efraim. Os gileaditas feriram os efraimitas porque estes tinham dito: "Vocês, gileaditas, são desertores de Efraim e de Manassés".5 Os gileaditas tomaram as passagens do Jordão que conduziam a Efraim. Sempre que um fugitivo de Efraim dizia: "Deixem-me atravessar", os homens de Gileade perguntavam: "Você é efraimita? " Se respondesse que não,6 diziam "Então diga: ‘Chibolete’ ". Se ele dissesse: "Sibolete", sem conseguir pronunciar corretamente a palavra, prendiam-no e matavam-no no lugar de passagem do Jordão. Quarenta e dois mil efraimitas foram mortos naquela ocasião.7 Jefté liderou Israel durante seis anos. Então o gileadita Jefté morreu, e foi sepultado numa cidade de Gileade.8 Depois de Jefté, Ibsã, de Belém, liderou Israel.9 Teve trinta filhos e trinta filhas. Deu suas filhas em casamento a homens de fora do seu clã, e trouxe para os seus filhos trinta mulheres de fora do seu clã. Ibsã liderou Israel durante sete anos.10 Então Ibsã morreu, e foi sepultado em Belém.11 Depois dele, Elom, da tribo de Zebulom, liderou Israel durante dez anos.12 Elom morreu, e foi sepultado em Aijalom, na terra de Zebulom.13 Depois dele, Abdom, filho de Hilel, de Piratom, liderou Israel.14 Teve quarenta filhos e trinta netos, que montavam setenta jumentos. Abdom liderou Israel durante oito anos.15 Então Abdom, filho de Hilel, morreu, e foi sepultado em Piratom, na terra de Efraim, na serra dos amalequitas.

1 And the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and passed northward. And they said to Jephthah, Why did thou pass over to fight against the sons of Ammon, and did not call us to go with thee? We will burn thy house upon thee with f2 And Jephthah said to them, I and my people were at great strife with the sons of Ammon, and when I called you, ye did not save me out of their hand.3 And when I saw that ye did not save me, I put my life in my hand, and passed opposite the sons of Ammon, and LORD delivered them into my hand. Why then have ye come up to me this day, to fight against me?4 Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim. And the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye are fugitives of Ephraim, ye Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim, [and] in the midst of Mana5 And the Gileadites took the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. And it was so, that, when [any of] the fugitives of Ephraim said, Let me go over, the men of Gilead said to him, Are thou an Ephraimite? If he said, No,6 then they said to him, Say now Shibboleth, and he said Sibboleth, for he could not frame to pronounce it right, then they laid hold on him, and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. And there fell at that time of Ephraim forty-two7 And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died, and was buried in [one of] the cities of Gilead.8 And after him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.9 And he had thirty sons. And he sent abroad thirty daughters, and thirty daughters he brought in from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.10 And Ibzan died, and was buried at Bethlehem.11 And after him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel, and he judged Israel ten years.12 And Elon the Zebulunite died, and was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.13 And after him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel.14 And he had forty sons and thirty sons' sons who rode on seventy donkey colts, and he judged Israel eight years.15 And Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill-country of the Amalekites.
