O reinado de Acazias, rei de Judá

1 O povo de Jerusalém proclamou Acazias, filho mais novo de Jeorão, rei em seu lugar, uma vez que as tropas que tinham vindo com os árabes mataram todos os outros filhos dele. Assim, começou a reinar Acazias, filho de Jeorão, rei de Judá.

2 Acazias tinha vinte e dois*22.2 Conforme alguns manuscritos da Septuaginta e a Versão Siríaca. Veja 2Rs 8.26; o Texto Massorético traz quarenta e dois. anos de idade quando começou a reinar e reinou um ano em Jerusalém. A mãe dele chamava-se Atalia e era neta de Onri.

3 Ele também andou nos caminhos da família de Acabe, pois a mãe dele lhe dava maus conselhos. 4 Fez o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor como a família de Acabe havia feito, porque, depois da morte do pai, eles se tornaram os seus conselheiros, para a sua ruína. 5 Ele também seguiu o conselho deles quando se aliou a Jorão, filho de Acabe, rei de Israel, e saiu para guerrear contra Hazael, rei de Arã, em Ramote-Gileade. Jorão foi ferido 6 e voltou a Jezreel para recuperar-se dos ferimentos sofridos em Ramote,*22.6 Hebraico: Ramá, variante de Ramote. na batalha contra Hazael, rei de Arã.

Acazias,*22.6 Conforme alguns manuscritos hebraicos, alguns manuscritos da Septuaginta, a Vulgata e a Versão Siríaca. Veja 2Rs 8.28; o Texto Massorético traz Azarias. rei de Judá, foi a Jezreel visitar Jorão, filho de Acabe, pois Jorão se recuperava dos ferimentos.

7 Por meio dessa visita, Deus provocou a queda de Acazias. Quando ele chegou, saiu com Jorão ao encontro de Jeú, filho de Ninsi, a quem o Senhor havia ungido para destruir a família de Acabe. 8 Quando Jeú estava executando juízo sobre a família de Acabe, encontrou os oficiais de Judá e os filhos dos parentes de Acazias, que lhe serviam, e os matou. 9 Depois, saiu em busca de Acazias, e os soldados dele o capturaram em Samaria, onde estava escondido. Levado a Jeú, Acazias foi morto. Não lhe negaram sepultura, pois disseram:

— Ele era neto de Josafá, que buscou o Senhor de todo o coração.

Assim, a família de Acazias não tinha mais ninguém que pudesse ser rei.

Joás escapa de Atalia

10 Quando Atalia, mãe de Acazias, soube que o seu filho estava morto, mandou matar toda a descendência real de Judá. 11 Contudo, Jeoseba,*22.11 Hebraico: Jeosabeate, variante de Jeoseba. Veja 2Rs 11.2. filha do rei Jeorão, pegou Joás, um dos filhos do rei Acazias que iam ser assassinados, e o colocou em um dormitório com a sua ama. Assim, Jeoseba, filha do rei Jeorão, mulher do sacerdote Joiada e irmã de Acazias, escondeu Joás de Atalia, de forma que ela não pôde matá-lo. 12 Durante seis anos, Joás ficou escondido com eles no templo de Deus, enquanto Atalia governava o país.

Ahaziah King of Judah

1 The people of Jerusalem made Ahaziah, Jehoram’s youngest son, king in his place, since the raiders, who came with the Arabs into the camp, had killed all the older sons. So Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign.

2 Ahaziah was twenty-two*22:2 Some Septuagint manuscripts and Syriac (see also 2 Kings 8:26); Hebrew forty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem one year. His mother’s name was Athaliah, a granddaughter of Omri.

3 He too followed the ways of the house of Ahab, for his mother encouraged him to act wickedly. 4 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, as the house of Ahab had done, for after his father’s death they became his advisers, to his undoing. 5 He also followed their counsel when he went with Joram*22:5 Hebrew Jehoram, a variant of Joram; also in verses 6 and 7 son of Ahab king of Israel to wage war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth Gilead. The Arameans wounded Joram; 6 so he returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds they had inflicted on him at Ramoth*22:6 Hebrew Ramah, a variant of Ramoth in his battle with Hazael king of Aram.

Then Ahaziah*22:6 Some Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint, Vulgate and Syriac (see also 2 Kings 8:29); most Hebrew manuscripts Azariah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to Jezreel to see Joram son of Ahab because he had been wounded.

7 Through Ahaziah’s visit to Joram, God brought about Ahaziah’s downfall. When Ahaziah arrived, he went out with Joram to meet Jehu son of Nimshi, whom the Lord had anointed to destroy the house of Ahab. 8 While Jehu was executing judgment on the house of Ahab, he found the officials of Judah and the sons of Ahaziah’s relatives, who had been attending Ahaziah, and he killed them. 9 He then went in search of Ahaziah, and his men captured him while he was hiding in Samaria. He was brought to Jehu and put to death. They buried him, for they said, "He was a son of Jehoshaphat, who sought the Lord with all his heart." So there was no one in the house of Ahaziah powerful enough to retain the kingdom.

Athaliah and Joash

10 When Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to destroy the whole royal family of the house of Judah. 11 But Jehosheba,*22:11 Hebrew Jehoshabeath, a variant of Jehosheba the daughter of King Jehoram, took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the royal princes who were about to be murdered and put him and his nurse in a bedroom. Because Jehosheba,*22:11 Hebrew Jehoshabeath, a variant of Jehosheba the daughter of King Jehoram and wife of the priest Jehoiada, was Ahaziah’s sister, she hid the child from Athaliah so she could not kill him. 12 He remained hidden with them at the temple of God for six years while Athaliah ruled the land.
