Ezequiel 18

Aquele que pecar morrerá

1 Esta palavra do Senhor veio a mim:

2 — O que vocês querem dizer quando citam este provérbio sobre Israel:

"Os pais comem uvas verdes,

e os dentes dos filhos se embotam"?

3 — Tão certo como eu vivo, declara o Soberano Senhor, vocês não citarão mais esse provérbio em Israel. 4 Pois todos me pertencem. Tanto o pai como o filho me pertencem. Aquele que pecar é que morrerá.

5 Suponhamos que haja um justo

que faz o que é certo e direito.

6 Ele não come nos santuários que há nos montes

nem olha para os ídolos do povo de Israel.

Ele não contamina a mulher do próximo

nem se deita com uma mulher durante os dias da sua menstruação.

7 Ele não oprime ninguém;

antes, devolve o que tomou como garantia em um empréstimo.

Não comete roubos;

antes, dá a sua comida aos famintos

e fornece roupas aos despidos.

8 Ele não empresta para ter lucro

nem cobra juros.

Ele retém a mão para não cometer erro

e julga com justiça entre dois homens.

9 Ele anda segundo os meus estatutos

e obedece fielmente às minhas ordenanças.

Esse homem é justo;

com certeza, ele viverá.

Palavra do Soberano Senhor.

10 — Suponhamos que ele tenha um filho violento, que derrama sangue ou faz qualquer uma destas outras coisas,*18.10 Ou coisas a um irmão.11 embora o pai não tenha feito nenhuma delas:

Ele come nos santuários que há nos montes.

Contamina a mulher do próximo.

12 Oprime os pobres e os necessitados.

Comete roubos.

Não devolve o que tomou como garantia.

Eleva os olhos para os ídolos

e pratica atos detestáveis.

13 Empresta para ter algum lucro e cobra juros.

Deverá viver um homem desse? Não! Por todas essas práticas detestáveis, com certeza será morto, e ele será responsável por sua própria morte.

14 — Mas suponhamos que esse filho tenha ele mesmo um filho que vê todos os pecados que o seu pai comete e, embora os veja, não os comete.

15 Ele não come nos santuários que há nos montes

nem eleva os seus olhos para os ídolos do povo de Israel.

Não contamina a mulher do próximo.

16 Não oprime ninguém

nem exige garantia para um empréstimo.

Não comete roubos,

mas dá a sua comida aos famintos

e fornece roupas aos despidos.

17 Ele retém a mão para não maltratar o pobre,

não empresta para ter algum lucro nem cobra juros.

Obedece às minhas leis e anda segundo os meus estatutos.

Ele não morrerá por causa da iniquidade do seu pai; certamente viverá. 18 Mas o seu pai morrerá por causa da sua própria iniquidade, pois praticou extorsão, roubou o seu compatriota e fez o que era errado no meio do seu povo.

19 — Contudo, vocês perguntam: "Por que o filho não partilha da culpa do pai?". Uma vez que o filho fez o que é justo e direito e teve o cuidado de obedecer a todos os meus estatutos, com certeza ele viverá. 20 Aquele que pecar é que morrerá. O filho não levará a culpa do pai nem o pai levará a culpa do filho. A justiça do justo lhe será creditada, e a impiedade do ímpio lhe será cobrada.

21 — Mas, se um ímpio se desviar de todos os pecados que cometeu, obedecer a todos os meus estatutos e fizer o que é justo e direito, certamente viverá; não morrerá. 22 Nenhuma das ofensas que cometeu será lembrada contra ele. Por causa dos atos de justiça que praticou, ele viverá. 23 Teria eu algum prazer na morte do ímpio? Palavra do Soberano Senhor. Ao contrário, acaso não me agrada vê-lo desviar-se dos seus caminhos e viver?

24 — Contudo, se um justo se desviar da sua justiça e cometer pecado e as mesmas práticas detestáveis dos ímpios, deverá ele viver? Nenhum dos seus atos de justiça será lembrado! Por causa da infidelidade de que é culpado e dos pecados que cometeu, ele morrerá.

25 — Contudo, vocês dizem: "O caminho do Senhor não é justo". Ouça, ó povo de Israel: O meu caminho é injusto? Não são os caminhos de vocês que são injustos? 26 Se um justo se desviar da sua justiça e cometer pecado, morrerá por causa disso; por causa do pecado que cometeu, morrerá. 27 Mas, se um ímpio se desviar da maldade que cometeu e fizer o que é justo e direito, ele salvará a sua vida. 28 Por considerar todas as ofensas que cometeu e se desviar delas, ele, com certeza, viverá; não morrerá. 29 Contudo, o povo de Israel diz: "O caminho do Senhor não é justo". São injustos os meus caminhos, ó povo de Israel? Não são os caminhos de vocês que são injustos?

30 — Portanto, ó povo de Israel, eu os julgarei, a cada um de acordo com os seus caminhos. Palavra do Soberano Senhor. Arrependam-se! Desviem-se de todos os seus males, para que o pecado não cause a queda*18.30 Ou tropeço. de vocês. 31 Livrem-se de todos os males que vocês cometeram e busquem um coração novo e um espírito novo.*18.31 Hebraico: e façam para vocês um coração novo e um espírito novo. Por que deveriam morrer, ó povo de Israel? 32 Pois não me agrada a morte de ninguém. Palavra do Soberano Senhor. Arrependam-se e vivam!

The One Who Sins Will Die

1 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 "What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel:

" ‘The parents eat sour grapes,

and the children’s teeth are set on edge’?

3 "As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel. 4 For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as the child—both alike belong to me. The one who sins is the one who will die.

5 "Suppose there is a righteous man

who does what is just and right.

6 He does not eat at the mountain shrines

or look to the idols of Israel.

He does not defile his neighbor’s wife

or have sexual relations with a woman during her period.

7 He does not oppress anyone,

but returns what he took in pledge for a loan.

He does not commit robbery

but gives his food to the hungry

and provides clothing for the naked.

8 He does not lend to them at interest

or take a profit from them.

He withholds his hand from doing wrong

and judges fairly between two parties.

9 He follows my decrees

and faithfully keeps my laws.

That man is righteous;

he will surely live,

declares the Sovereign Lord.

10 "Suppose he has a violent son, who sheds blood or does any of these other things*18:10 Or things to a brother11 (though the father has done none of them):

"He eats at the mountain shrines.

He defiles his neighbor’s wife.

12 He oppresses the poor and needy.

He commits robbery.

He does not return what he took in pledge.

He looks to the idols.

He does detestable things.

13 He lends at interest and takes a profit.

Will such a man live? He will not! Because he has done all these detestable things, he is to be put to death; his blood will be on his own head.

14 "But suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father commits, and though he sees them, he does not do such things:

15 "He does not eat at the mountain shrines

or look to the idols of Israel.

He does not defile his neighbor’s wife.

16 He does not oppress anyone

or require a pledge for a loan.

He does not commit robbery

but gives his food to the hungry

and provides clothing for the naked.

17 He withholds his hand from mistreating the poor

and takes no interest or profit from them.

He keeps my laws and follows my decrees.

He will not die for his father’s sin; he will surely live. 18 But his father will die for his own sin, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother and did what was wrong among his people.

19 "Yet you ask, ‘Why does the son not share the guilt of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right and has been careful to keep all my decrees, he will surely live. 20 The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.

21 "But if a wicked person turns away from all the sins they have committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, that person will surely live; they will not die. 22 None of the offenses they have committed will be remembered against them. Because of the righteous things they have done, they will live. 23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign Lord. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?

24 "But if a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked person does, will they live? None of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness they are guilty of and because of the sins they have committed, they will die.

25 "Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear, you Israelites: Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust? 26 If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin, they will die for it; because of the sin they have committed they will die. 27 But if a wicked person turns away from the wickedness they have committed and does what is just and right, they will save their life. 28 Because they consider all the offenses they have committed and turn away from them, that person will surely live; they will not die. 29 Yet the Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are my ways unjust, people of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust?

30 "Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. 31 Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, people of Israel? 32 For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!
