1 Depois de um longo tempo, no terceiro ano da seca, a palavra do Senhor veio a Elias: "Vá apresentar-se a Acabe, pois enviarei chuva sobre a terra".2 E Elias foi. Como a fome era grande em Samaria,3 Acabe convocou Obadias, o responsável por seu palácio, homem que temia muito ao Senhor.4 Enquanto Jezabel estava eliminando os profetas do Senhor, Obadias reuniu cem profetas e os escondeu em duas cavernas, cinqüenta em cada uma, e lhes forneceu comida e água.5 Certa vez Acabe disse a Obadias: "Vamos a todas as fontes e vales do país. Talvez consigamos achar um pouco de capim para manter vivos os cavalos e as mulas e assim não será preciso matar nenhum animal".6 De modo que dividiram o território que iam percorrer; Acabe foi numa direção e Obadias noutra.7 Quando Obadias estava a caminho, Elias o encontrou. Obadias o reconheceu, inclinou-se até o chão e perguntou: "És tu mesmo, meu senhor Elias? "8 "Sou", respondeu Elias. "Vá dizer ao seu senhor: Elias está aqui. "9 "O que eu fiz de errado", perguntou Obadias, "para que entregues o teu servo a Acabe para ser morto?10 Juro pelo nome do Senhor, o teu Deus, que não há uma só nação ou reino aonde o rei, meu senhor, não enviou alguém para procurar por ti. E, sempre que uma nação ou reino afirmava que tu não estavas lá, ele os fazia jurar que não conseguiram encontrar-te.11 Mas agora me dizes para ir até o meu senhor e dizer-lhe: ‘Elias está aqui’.12 Não sei para onde o Espírito do Senhor poderá levar-te quando eu te deixar. Se eu for dizer a Acabe e ele não te encontrar, ele me matará. E eu, que sou teu servo, tenho adorado o Senhor desde a minha juventude.13 Por acaso não ouviste, meu senhor, o que eu fiz enquanto Jezabel estava matando os profetas do Senhor? Escondi cem dos profetas do Senhor em duas cavernas, cinqüenta em cada uma, e os abasteci de comida e água.14 E agora me dizes para ir ao meu senhor e dizer-lhe: ‘Elias está aqui’. Ele vai me matar! "15 E disse Elias: "Juro pelo nome do Senhor dos Exércitos, a quem eu sirvo, que hoje eu me apresentarei a Acabe".16 Então Obadias dirigiu-se a Acabe e passou-lhe a informação, e Acabe foi ao encontro de Elias.17 Quando viu Elias, disse-lhe: "É você mesmo, perturbador de Israel? "18 "Não tenho perturbado Israel", Elias respondeu. "Mas você e a família do seu pai têm. Vocês abandonaram os mandamentos do Senhor e seguiram os baalins.19 Agora convoque todo o povo de Israel para encontrar-se comigo no monte Carmelo. E traga os quatrocentos e cinqüenta profetas de Baal e os quatrocentos profetas de Aserá, que comem à mesa de Jezabel. "20 Acabe convocou então todo o Israel e reuniu os profetas no monte Carmelo.21 Elias dirigiu-se ao povo e disse: "Até quando vocês vão oscilar entre duas opiniões? Se o Senhor é Deus, sigam-no; mas, se Baal é Deus, sigam-no". O povo, porém, nada respondeu.22 Disse então Elias: "Eu sou o único que restou dos profetas do Senhor, mas Baal tem quatrocentos e cinqüenta profetas.23 Tragam dois novilhos. Escolham eles um, e cortem-no em pedaços e o ponham sobre a lenha, mas não acendam fogo. Eu prepararei o outro novilho e o colocarei sobre a lenha, e também não acenderei fogo nela.24 Então vocês invocarão o nome do seu deus, e eu invocarei o nome do Senhor. O deus que responder por meio do fogo, esse é Deus". Então todo o povo disse: "O que você disse é bom".25 Elias disse aos profetas de Baal: "Escolham um dos novilhos e preparem-no primeiro, visto que vocês são tantos. Clamem pelo nome do seu deus, mas não acendam o fogo".26 Então pegaram o novilho que lhes foi dado e o prepararam. E clamaram pelo nome de Baal desde a manhã até o meio-dia. "Ó Baal, responde-nos! ", gritavam. E dançavam em volta do altar que haviam feito. Mas não houve nenhuma resposta; ninguém respondeu.27 Ao meio-dia Elias começou a zombar deles. "Gritem mais alto! ", dizia, "já que ele é um deus. Quem sabe está meditando, ou ocupado, ou viajando. Talvez esteja dormindo e precise ser despertado. "28 Então passaram a gritar ainda mais alto e a ferir-se com espadas e lanças, de acordo com o costume deles, até sangrarem.29 Passou o meio-dia, e eles continuaram profetizando em transe até a hora do sacrifício da tarde. Mas não houve resposta alguma; ninguém respondeu, ninguém deu atenção.30 Então Elias disse a todo o povo: "Aproximem-se de mim". O povo aproximou-se, e Elias reparou o altar do Senhor, que estava em ruínas.31 Depois apanhou doze pedras, uma para cada tribo dos descendentes de Jacó, a quem a palavra do Senhor tinha sido dirigida, e disse: "Seu nome será Israel".32 Com as pedras construiu um altar em honra do nome do Senhor, e cavou ao redor do altar uma valeta com capacidade de duas medidas de semente.33 Depois arrumou a lenha, cortou o novilho em pedaços e o pôs sobre a lenha. Então lhes disse: "Encham de água quatro jarras grandes e derramem-na sobre o holocausto e sobre a lenha".34 "Façam-no novamente", disse, e eles o fizeram de novo. "Façam-no pela terceira vez", ordenou, e eles o fizeram pela terceira vez.35 A água escorria do altar, chegando a encher a valeta.36 À hora do sacrifício, o profeta Elias colocou-se à frente e orou: "Ó Senhor, Deus de Abraão, de Isaque e de Israel, que hoje fique conhecido que tu és Deus em Israel e que sou o teu servo e que fiz todas estas coisas por ordem tua.37 Responde-me, ó Senhor, responde-me, para que este povo saiba que tu, ó Senhor, és Deus, e que fazes o coração deles voltar para ti".38 Então o fogo do Senhor caiu e queimou completamente o holocausto, a lenha, as pedras e o chão, e também secou totalmente a água na valeta.39 Quando o povo viu isso, todos caíram prostrados e gritaram: "O Senhor é Deus! O Senhor é Deus! "40 Então Elias ordenou-lhes: "Prendam os profetas de Baal. Não deixem nenhum escapar! " Eles os prenderam, e Elias os fez descer ao riacho de Quisom e lá os matou.41 E Elias disse a Acabe: "Vá comer e beber, pois já ouço o barulho de chuva pesada".42 Então Acabe foi comer e beber, mas Elias subiu até o alto do Carmelo, dobrou-se até o chão e pôs o rosto entre os joelhos.43 "Vá e olhe na direção do mar", disse ao seu servo. E ele foi e olhou. "Não há nada lá", disse ele. Sete vezes Elias mandou: "Volte para ver".44 Na sétima vez o servo disse: "Uma nuvem tão pequena quanto a mão de um homem está se levantando do mar". Então Elias disse: "Vá dizer a Acabe: Prepare o seu carro e desça, antes que a chuva o impeça".45 Enquanto isso, nuvens escuras apareceram no céu, começou a ventar e começou a chover forte, e Acabe partiu de carro para Jezreel.46 O poder do Senhor veio sobre Elias, e este, prendendo a capa com o cinto, correu à frente de Acabe por todo o caminho até Jezreel.

1 And it came to pass after many days, that the word of Yahweh came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, Go, show yourself to Ahab; and I will send rain on the earth.2 And Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. And the famine was intense in Samaria.3 And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared Yahweh greatly:4 for it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Yahweh, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)5 And Ahab said to Obadiah, Go through the land, to all the fountains of water, and to all the brooks: perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we do not lose all the beasts.6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.7 And as Obadiah was in the way, look, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Is it you, my lord Elijah?8 And he answered him, It is I: go, tell your lord, Look, Elijah [is here].9 And he said, In what have I sinned, that you would deliver your slave into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?10 As Yahweh your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom, where my lord has not sent to seek you: and when they said, He is not here, he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they didn't find you.11 And now you say, Go, tell your lord, Look, Elijah [is here].12 And it will come to pass, as soon as I am gone from you, I don't know where the Spirit of Yahweh will carry you; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he can't find you, he will slay me: but I your slave have feared Yahweh from my youth.13 Wasn't it told to my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of Yahweh, how I hid a hundred men of Yahweh's prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?14 And now you say, Go, tell your lord, Look, Elijah [is here]; and he will slay me.15 And Elijah said, As Yahweh of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, Is it you, you troubler of Israel?18 And he answered, I haven't troubled Israel; but you, and your father's house, in that you{+} have forsaken the commandments of Yahweh, and you have followed the Baalim.19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel to mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah four hundred, that eat at Jezebel's table.20 So Ahab sent to all the sons of Israel, and gathered the prophets together to mount Carmel.21 And Elijah came near to all the people, and said, How long do you{+} go limping between the two sides? If Yahweh is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.22 Then Elijah said to the people, I, even I only, am left a prophet of Yahweh; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bull, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under.24 And you{+} call on the name of your{+} god, and I will call on the name of Yahweh; and the God who answers by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.25 And Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, Choose{+} one bull for yourselves, and dress it first; for you{+} are many; and call on the name of your{+} god, but put no fire under.26 And they took the bull which was given to them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any who answered. And they leaped about the altar which was made.27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud; for he is a god: either he is musing, or he has gone aside, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he sleeps and must be awakened.28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them.29 And it was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the [evening] oblation; but there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any who regarded.30 And Elijah said to all the people, Come near to me; and all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of Yahweh that was thrown down.31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of Yahweh came, saying, Israel will be your name.32 And with the stones he built an altar in the name of Yahweh; and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two seahs of seed.33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood. And he said, Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt-offering, and on the wood.34 And he said, Do it the second time; and they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time; and they did it the third time.35 And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the [evening] oblation, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, O Yahweh, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your slave, and that I have done all these things at your word.37 Hear me, O Yahweh, hear me, that this people may know that you, Yahweh, are God, and [that] you have turned their heart back again.38 Then the fire of Yahweh fell, and consumed the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, Yahweh, he is God; Yahweh, he is God.40 And Elijah said to them, Take the prophets of Baal; don't let one of them escape. And they took them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.41 And Elijah said to Ahab, Go up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down on the earth, and put his face between his knees.43 And he said to his attendant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Look, there rises a cloud out of the sea, as small as a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say to Ahab, Make ready [your chariot], and go down, that the rain doesn't stop you.45 And it came to pass in a little while, that the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel:46 and the hand of Yahweh was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
