1 Salomão aliou-se ao faraó, rei do Egito, casando-se com a filha dele. Ele a trouxe à cidade de Davi até terminar a construção do seu palácio e do templo do Senhor, e do muro em torno de Jerusalém.2 O povo, porém, sacrificava nos lugares sagrados, pois ainda não tinha sido construído um templo em honra do nome do Senhor.3 Salomão amava o Senhor, pois andava de acordo com os decretos do seu pai Davi; todavia oferecia sacrifícios e queimava incenso nos lugares sagrados.4 O rei Salomão foi a Gibeom para oferecer sacrifícios, pois ali ficava o principal lugar sagrado, e ofereceu naquele altar mil holocaustos.5 Em Gibeom o Senhor apareceu a Salomão num sonho, à noite, e lhe disse: "Peça-me o que quiser, e eu lhe darei".6 Salomão respondeu: "Tu foste muito bondoso para com o teu servo, o meu pai Davi, pois ele foi fiel a ti, e foi justo e reto de coração. Tu sustentaste grande bondade para com ele e lhe deste um filho que hoje se assenta no seu trono.7 "Agora, Senhor meu Deus, fizeste o teu servo reinar em lugar de meu pai Davi. Mas eu não passo de um jovem e não sei o que fazer.8 Teu servo está aqui entre o povo que escolheste, um povo tão grande que nem se pode contar.9 Dá, pois, ao teu servo um coração cheio de discernimento para governar o teu povo e capaz de distinguir entre o bem e o mal. Pois, quem pode governar este teu grande povo? "10 O pedido que Salomão fez agradou ao Senhor.11 Por isso Deus lhe disse: "Já que você pediu isto e não uma vida longa nem riqueza, nem pediu a morte dos seus inimigos, mas discernimento para ministrar a justiça,12 farei o que você pediu. Eu lhe darei um coração sábio e capaz de discernir, de modo que nunca houve nem haverá ninguém como você.13 Também lhe darei o que você não pediu: riquezas e fama; de forma que não haverá rei igual a você durante toda a sua vida.14 E, se você andar nos meus caminhos e obedecer aos meus decretos e aos meus mandamentos, como o seu pai Davi, eu prolongarei a sua vida".15 Então Salomão acordou e percebeu que tinha sido um sonho. Depois voltou a Jerusalém, pôs-se perante a arca da aliança do Senhor, sacrificou holocaustos e apresentou ofertas de comunhão. Então deu um banquete para toda a sua corte.16 Certo dia duas prostitutas compareceram diante do rei.17 Uma delas disse: "Ah meu senhor! Esta mulher mora comigo na mesma casa. Eu dei à luz um filho e ela estava comigo na casa.18 Três dias depois de nascer o meu filho, esta mulher também deu à luz um filho. Estávamos sozinhas, e não havia mais ninguém na casa.19 "Certa noite esta mulher se deitou sobre o seu filho, e ele morreu.20 Então ela se levantou no meio da noite e pegou o meu filho enquanto eu, tua serva, dormia, e o pôs ao seu lado. E pôs o filho dela, morto, ao meu lado.21 Ao levantar-me de madrugada para amamentar o meu filho, ele estava morto. Mas quando olhei bem para ele de manhã, vi que não era o filho que eu dera à luz".22 A outra mulher disse: "Não! O que está vivo é meu filho; o morto é seu". Mas a primeira insistia: "Não! O morto é seu; o vivo é meu". Assim elas discutiram diante do rei.23 O rei disse: "Esta afirma: ‘Meu filho está vivo, e o seu filho está morto’, enquanto aquela diz: ‘Não! Seu filho está morto, e o meu está vivo’ ".24 Então o rei ordenou: "Tragam-me uma espada". Trouxeram-lhe.25 Ele então ordenou: "Cortem a criança viva ao meio e dêem metade a uma e metade à outra".26 A mãe do filho que estava vivo, movida pela compaixão materna, clamou: "Por favor, meu senhor, dê a criança viva a ela! Não a mate! " A outra, porém, disse: "Não será nem minha nem sua. Cortem-na ao meio! "27 Então o rei deu o seu veredicto: "Não matem a criança! Dêem-na à primeira mulher. Ela é a mãe".28 Quando todo o Israel ouviu o veredicto do rei, passou a respeitá-lo profundamente, pois viu que a sabedoria de Deus estava nele para fazer justiça.

1 And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh's daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of Yahweh, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.2 Only the people sacrificed in the high places, because there was no house built for the name of Yahweh until those days.3 And Solomon loved Yahweh, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.4 And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt-offerings did Solomon offer on that altar.5 In Gibeon Yahweh appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, Ask what I will give you.6 And Solomon said, You have shown to your slave David my father great loving-kindness, according as he walked before you in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with you; and you have kept for him this great loving-kindness, that you have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.7 And now, O Yahweh my God, you have made your slave king instead of David my father: and I am but a small lad; I don't know how to go out or come in.8 And your slave is in the midst of your people which you have chosen, a great people, who are too many to be numbered or counted.9 Give your slave therefore an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this your great people?10 And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.11 And God said to him, Because you have asked this thing, and haven't asked for yourself long life, neither have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice;12 look, I have done according to your word: see, I have given you a wise and an understanding heart; so that there has been none like you before you, neither after you will any arise like you.13 And I have also given you that which you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that there will not be any among the kings like you, all your days.14 And if you will walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.15 And Solomon awoke; and, saw that it was a dream: and he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and offered up burnt-offerings, and offered peace-offerings, and made a feast to all his slaves.16 Then there came two women who were prostitutes, to the king, and stood before him.17 And the one woman said, Oh, my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I gave birth with her in the house.18 And it came to pass on the third day after I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also; and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, only us two in the house.19 And this woman's son died in the night, because she laid on him.20 And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while your slave slept, and laid him in her bosom, and laid her dead son in my bosom.21 And when I rose in the morning to nurse my son, look, he was dead; but when I had looked at him in the morning, I noticed he wasn't my son, whom I bore.22 And the other woman said, No; but the living is my son, and the dead is your son. And this said, No; but the dead is your son, and the living is my son. Thus they spoke before the king.23 Then the king said, The one says, This is my son who lives, and your son is the dead: and the other says, No; but your son is the dead, and my son is the living.24 And the king said, Fetch me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.25 And the king said, Cut the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.26 Then the woman whose son was the living spoke to the king, for her heart yearned over her son, and she said, Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and in no way slay him. But the other said, He will be neither mine nor yours. Cut [him in two]!27 Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no way slay him: she is his mother.28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.
