1 Disse o Senhor a Josué:2 "Diga aos israelitas que designem as cidades de refúgio, como lhes ordenei por meio de Moisés,3 para que todo aquele que matar alguém sem intenção e acidentalmente possa fugir para lá e proteger-se do vingador da vítima.4 "Quando o homicida involuntário fugir para uma dessas cidades, terá que colocar-se junto à porta da cidade e expor o caso às autoridades daquela cidade. Eles o receberão e lhe darão um local para morar entre eles.5 Caso o vingador da vítima o persiga, eles não o entregarão, pois matou seu próximo acidentalmente, sem maldade e sem premeditação.6 Todavia, ele terá que permanecer naquela cidade até comparecer a julgamento perante a comunidade e até morrer o sumo sacerdote que estiver servindo naquele período. Então poderá voltar para a sua própria casa, à cidade de onde fugiu".7 Assim eles separaram Quedes, na Galiléia, nos montes de Naftali, Siquém, nos montes de Efraim, e Quiriate-Arba, que é Hebrom, nos montes de Judá.8 No lado leste do Jordão, perto de Jericó designaram Bezer, no planalto desértico da tribo de Rúben; Ramote, em Gileade, na tribo de Gade; e Golã, em Basã, na tribo de Manassés.9 Qualquer israelita ou estrangeiro residente que matasse alguém sem intenção, poderia fugir para qualquer dessas cidades para isso designadas e escapar do vingador da vítima, antes de comparecer a julgamento perante a comunidade.

1 And Yahweh spoke to Joshua, saying,2 Speak to the sons of Israel, saying, Assign for yourselves the cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you{+} by Moses,3 that the manslayer that kills any person unintentionally [and] unawares may flee there: and they will be to you{+} for a refuge from the avenger of blood.4 And he will flee to one of those cities, and will stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city; and they will take him into the city to them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.5 And if the avenger of blood pursues after him, then they will not deliver up the manslayer into his hand; because he struck his fellow man unawares, and did not hate him formerly.6 And he will dwell in that city, until he stands before the congregation for judgment, until the death of the high priest who will be in those days: then the manslayer will return, and come to his own city, and to his own house, to the city from where he fled.7 And they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill-country of Naphtali, and Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (the same is Hebron) in the hill-country of Judah.8 And beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness in the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.9 These were the appointed cities for all the sons of Israel, and for the stranger who sojourns among them, that whoever kills any person unintentionally might flee there, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stands before the congregation.
