1 Estas são as palavras ditas por Moisés a todo o Israel no deserto, a leste do Jordão, na Arabá, defronte de Sufe, entre Parã e Tofel, Labã, Hazerote e Di-Zaabe.2 Em onze dias se vai de Horebe a Cades-Barnéia pelo caminho dos montes de Seir.3 No quadragésimo ano, no primeiro dia do décimo primeiro mês, Moisés proclamou aos israelitas todas as ordens do Senhor acerca deles.4 Isso foi depois que ele derrotou Seom, rei dos amorreus, que habitava em Hesbom, e em Edrei derrotou Ogue, rei de Basã, que habitava em Asterote.5 A leste do Jordão, na terra de Moabe, Moisés tomou sobre si a responsabilidade de expor esta lei:6 O Senhor, o nosso Deus, disse-nos em Horebe: "Vocês já ficaram bastante tempo nesta montanha.7 Levantem acampamento e avancem para a serra dos amorreus; vão a todos os povos vizinhos na Arabá, nas montanhas, na Sefelá, no Neguebe e ao longo do litoral, à terra dos cananeus e ao Líbano, até o grande rio, o Eufrates.8 "Ponho esta terra diante de vocês. Entrem e tomem posse da terra que o Senhor prometeu sob juramento dar aos seus antepassados, Abraão, Isaque e Jacó, e aos seus descendentes".9 Naquela ocasião eu lhes disse: "Não posso levá-los sozinho.10 O Senhor, o seu Deus, os fez multiplicar de tal modo que hoje vocês são tão numerosos quanto as estrelas do céu.11 Que o Senhor, o Deus dos seus antepassados, os multiplique mil vezes mais e os abençoe, conforme lhes prometeu!12 Mas como poderei levar sozinho os seus problemas, as suas cargas e as suas disputas?13 Escolham homens sábios, criteriosos e experientes de cada uma de suas tribos, e eu os colocarei como chefes de vocês".14 Vocês me disseram que essa era uma boa proposta.15 Então convoquei os chefes das tribos, homens sábios e experientes, e os designei como chefes de mil, de cem, de cinqüenta e de dez, além de oficiais para cada tribo.16 Naquela ocasião ordenei aos juízes de vocês: "Atendam as questões de seus irmãos e julguem com justiça, não só as questões entre os seus compatriotas como também entre um israelita e um estrangeiro.17 Não sejam parciais no julgamento! Atendam tanto o pequeno como o grande. Não se deixem intimidar por ninguém, pois o veredicto pertence a Deus. Tragam-me os casos mais difíceis e eu os ouvirei.18 Naquela ocasião eu lhes ordenei tudo o que deveriam fazer".19 Depois, conforme o Senhor, o nosso Deus, nos tinha ordenado, partimos de Horebe e fomos para a serra dos amorreus, passando por todo aquele imenso e terrível deserto que vocês viram, e assim chegamos a Cades-Barnéia.20 Então eu lhes disse: "Vocês chegaram à serra dos amorreus, a qual o Senhor, o nosso Deus, nos dá.21 Vejam, o Senhor, o seu Deus, põe diante de vocês esta terra. Entrem na terra e tomem posse dela, conforme o Senhor, o Deus dos seus antepassados, lhes disse. Não tenham medo nem se desanimem".22 Vocês todos vieram dizer-me: "Mandemos alguns homens à nossa frente em missão de reconhecimento da região, para que nos indiquem por qual caminho subiremos e a quais cidades iremos".23 A sugestão pareceu-me boa; por isso escolhi doze de vocês, um homem de cada tribo.24 Eles subiram a região montanhosa, chegaram ao vale de Escol e o exploraram.25 Trouxeram alguns frutos da região, com o seguinte relato: "Essa terra que o Senhor, o nosso Deus, nos dá é boa".26 Vocês, contudo, não quiseram ir, e se rebelaram contra a ordem do Senhor, o seu Deus.27 Queixaram-se em suas tendas, dizendo: "O Senhor nos odeia; por isso nos trouxe do Egito para nos entregar nas mãos dos amorreus e destruir-nos.28 Para onde iremos? Nossos compatriotas nos desanimaram quando disseram: O povo é mais forte e mais alto do que nós; as cidades são grandes, com muros que vão até o céu. Vimos ali os enaquins".29 Então eu lhes disse: Não fiquem apavorados; não tenham medo deles.30 O Senhor, o seu Deus, que está indo à frente de vocês, lutará por vocês, como fez no Egito, diante de seus próprios olhos.31 Também no deserto vocês viram como o Senhor, o seu Deus, os carregou, como um pai carrega seu filho, por todo o caminho que percorreram até chegarem a este lugar.32 Apesar disso, vocês não confiaram no Senhor, o seu Deus,33 que foi à frente de vocês, numa coluna de fogo de noite e numa nuvem de dia, para procurar lugares para vocês acamparem e para mostrar-lhes o caminho que vocês deviam seguir.34 Quando o Senhor ouviu o que vocês diziam, irou-se e jurou:35 "Ninguém desta geração má verá a boa terra que jurei dar aos seus antepassados,36 exceto Calebe, filho de Jefoné. Ele a verá, e eu darei a ele e a seus descendentes a terra em que pisou, pois seguiu o Senhor de todo o coração".37 Por causa de vocês o Senhor irou-se contra mim e me disse: "Você também não entrará na terra.38 Mas o seu auxiliar, Josué, filho de Num, entrará. Encoraje-o, pois ele fará com que Israel tome posse dela.39 Mas as crianças que vocês disseram que seriam levadas como despojo, os seus filhos que ainda não distinguem entre o bem e o mal, eles entrarão na terra. Eu a darei a eles, e eles tomarão posse dela.40 Mas quanto a vocês, dêem meia-volta e partam para o deserto pelo caminho do mar Vermelho".41 Então vocês responderam: "Pecamos contra o Senhor. Nós subiremos e lutaremos, conforme tudo o que o Senhor, o nosso Deus, nos ordenou". Cada um de vocês preparou-se com as suas armas de guerra, achando que seria fácil subir a região montanhosa.42 Mas o Senhor me disse: "Diga-lhes que não subam nem lutem, porque não estarei com vocês. Vocês serão derrotados pelos seus inimigos".43 Eu lhes disse isso, mas vocês não me deram ouvidos, rebelaram-se contra o Senhor e, com presunção, subiram a região montanhosa.44 Os amorreus que lá viviam os atacaram, os perseguiram como um enxame de abelhas e os arrasaram desde Seir até Hormá.45 Vocês voltaram e choraram perante o Senhor, mas ele não ouviu o seu clamor nem lhes deu atenção.46 Então vocês ficaram em Cades, onde permaneceram muito tempo.

1 These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah across from Suph, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Di-zahab.2 It is eleven days' [journey] from Horeb by the way of mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea.3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spoke to the sons of Israel, according to all that Yahweh had given him in commandment to them;4 after he had struck Sihon the king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who dwelt in Ashtaroth, at Edrei.5 Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses began to declare this law, saying,6 Yahweh our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying, You{+} have dwelt long enough in this mountain:7 turn{+}, and take your{+} journey, and go{+} to the hill-country of the Amorites, and to all its neighboring places, in the Arabah, in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and in the South, and by the seashore, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.8 Look, I have set the land before you{+}: go in and possess the land which Yahweh swore to your{+} fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their seed after them.9 And I spoke to you{+} at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you{+} myself alone:10 Yahweh your{+} God has multiplied you{+}, and see, you{+} are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.11 Yahweh, the God of your{+} fathers, may he make you{+} a thousand times as many as you{+} are, and bless you{+}, as he has promised you{+}!12 How can I myself alone bear your{+} cumbrance, and your{+} burden, and your{+} strife?13 Take yourselves wise men, and understanding, and known, according to your{+} tribes, and I will make them heads over you{+}.14 And you{+} answered me, and said, The thing which you have spoken is good [for us] to do.15 So I took the heads of your{+} tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you{+}, captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens, and officers, according to your{+} tribes.16 And I charged your{+} judges at that time, saying, Hear [the causes] between your{+} brothers, and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the sojourner who is with him.17 You{+} will not respect persons in judgment; you{+} will hear the small and the great alike; you{+} will not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God's: and the cause that is too hard for you{+}, you{+} will bring to me, and I will hear it.18 And I commanded you{+} at that time all the things which you{+} should do.19 And we journeyed from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you{+} saw, by the way to the hill-country of the Amorites, as Yahweh our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.20 And I said to you{+}, You{+} have come to the hill-country of the Amorites, which Yahweh our God gives to us.21 Look, Yahweh your God has set the land before you: go up, take possession, as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has spoken to you; don't be afraid, neither be dismayed.22 And you{+} came near to me every one of you{+}, and said, Let us send men before us, that they may search the land for us, and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up, and the cities to which we will come.23 And the thing pleased me well; and I took twelve men of you{+}, one man for every tribe:24 and they turned and went up into the hill-country, and came to the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out.25 And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down to us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which Yahweh our God gives to us.26 Yet you{+} would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of Yahweh your{+} God:27 and you{+} murmured in your{+} tents, and said, Because Yahweh hated us, he has brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.28 Where are we going up? Our brothers have made our heart to melt, saying, The people are greater and more numerous than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.29 Then I said to you{+}, Don't dread, neither be afraid of them.30 Yahweh your{+} God who goes before you{+}, he will fight for you{+}, according to all that he did for you{+} in Egypt before your{+} eyes,31 and in the wilderness, where you have seen how that Yahweh your God bore you, as a man does bear his son, in all the way that you{+} went, until you{+} came to this place.32 Yet in this thing you{+} did not believe Yahweh your{+} God,33 who went before you{+} in the way, to seek you{+} out a place to pitch your{+} tents in, in fire by night, to show you{+} by what way you{+} should go, and in the cloud by day.34 And Yahweh heard the voice of your{+} words, and was angry, and swore, saying,35 Surely not a man of these men of this evil generation will see the good land, which I swore to give to your{+} fathers,36 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh: he will see it; and to him I will give the land that he has trodden on, and to his sons, because he has wholly followed Yahweh.37 Also Yahweh was angry with me for your{+} sakes, saying, You also will not go in there:38 Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he will go in there: encourage him; for he will cause Israel to inherit it.39 Moreover your{+} little ones, that you{+} said should be a prey, and your{+} sons, that this day have no knowledge of good or evil, they will go in there, and to them I will give it, and they will possess it.40 But as for you{+}, you{+} turn, and take your{+} journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.41 Then you{+} answered and said to me, We have sinned against Yahweh, we will go up and fight, according to all that Yahweh our God commanded us. And you{+} girded on every man his weapons of war, and were forward to go up into the hill-country.42 And Yahweh said to me, Say to them, Don't go up, neither fight; for I am not among you{+}; lest you{+} be struck before your{+} enemies.43 So I spoke to you{+}, and you{+} didn't listen; but you{+} rebelled against the commandment of Yahweh, and were presumptuous, and went up into the hill-country.44 And the Amorites, that dwelt in that hill-country, came out against you{+}, and chased you{+}, as bees do, and beat you{+} down in Seir, even to Hormah.45 And you{+} returned and wept before Yahweh; but Yahweh didn't listen to your{+} voice, nor gave ear to you{+}.46 So you{+} remained in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you{+} remained [there].
