1 E agora, ó Israel, ouça os decretos e as leis que lhes estou ensinando a cumprir, para que vivam e tomem posse da terra, que o Senhor, o Deus dos seus antepassados, dá a vocês.2 Nada acrescentem às palavras que eu lhes ordeno e delas nada retirem, mas obedeçam aos mandamentos do Senhor, o Deus de vocês, que eu lhes ordeno.3 Vocês viram com os próprios olhos o que o Senhor fez em Baal-Peor. O Senhor, o seu Deus, destruiu do meio de vocês todos os que seguiram a Baal-Peor,4 mas vocês, que permaneceram fiéis ao Senhor, o Deus de vocês, estão hoje todos vivos.5 Eu lhes ensinei decretos e leis, como me ordenou o Senhor, o meu Deus, para que sejam cumpridos na terra na qual vocês estão entrando para dela tomar posse.6 Vocês devem obedecer-lhes e cumpri-los, pois assim os outros povos verão a sabedoria e o discernimento de vocês. Quando eles ouvirem todos estes decretos dirão: "De fato esta grande nação é um povo sábio e inteligente".7 Pois, que grande nação tem um Deus tão próximo como o Senhor, o nosso Deus, sempre que o invocamos?8 Ou, que grande nação tem decretos e preceitos tão justos como esta lei que estou apresentando a vocês hoje?9 Apenas cuidado! Muito cuidado, para que vocês nunca se esqueçam das coisas que os seus olhos viram; conservem-nas na memória por toda a sua vida. Contem-nas a seus filhos e a seus netos.10 Houve um dia em que vocês estiveram diante do Senhor, o seu Deus, em Horebe, quando o Senhor me disse: "Reúna o povo diante de mim para ouvir as minhas palavras, a fim de que aprendam a me temer enquanto viverem sobre a terra, e as ensinem a seus filhos".11 Vocês se aproximaram e ficaram ao pé do monte. O monte ardia em chamas que subiam até o céu, e estava envolvido por uma nuvem escura e densa.12 Então o Senhor falou a vocês do meio do fogo. Vocês ouviram as palavras, mas não viram forma alguma; apenas se ouvia a voz.13 Ele lhes anunciou a sua aliança, os Dez Mandamentos. E escreveu-os sobre duas tábuas de pedra e ordenou que os cumprissem.14 Naquela ocasião, o Senhor mandou-me ensinar-lhes decretos e leis para que vocês os cumprissem na terra da qual vão tomar posse.15 No dia em que o Senhor lhes falou do meio do fogo em Horebe, vocês não viram forma alguma. Portanto, tenham muito cuidado,16 para que não se corrompam e não façam para si um ídolo, uma imagem de qualquer forma semelhante a homem ou mulher,17 ou a qualquer animal da terra ou a qualquer ave que voa no céu,18 ou a qualquer criatura que se move rente ao chão ou a qualquer peixe que vive nas águas debaixo da terra.19 E para que, ao erguerem os olhos ao céu e virem o sol, a lua e as estrelas, todos os corpos celestes, vocês não se desviem e se prostrem diante deles, e prestem culto àquilo que o Senhor, o seu Deus, distribuiu a todos os povos debaixo do céu.20 A vocês, o Senhor tomou e os tirou da fornalha de fundir ferro, do Egito, para serem o povo de sua herança, como hoje se pode ver.21 O Senhor irou-se contra mim por causa de vocês e jurou que eu não atravessaria o Jordão e não entraria na boa terra que o Senhor, o seu Deus, está lhes dando por herança.22 Eu morrerei nesta terra; não atravessarei o Jordão. Mas vocês atravessarão e tomarão posse daquela boa terra.23 Tenham o cuidado de não esquecer da aliança que o Senhor, o seu Deus, fez com vocês; não façam para si ídolo algum com a forma de qualquer coisa que o Senhor, o seu Deus, proibiu.24 Pois o Senhor, o seu Deus, é Deus zeloso; é fogo consumidor.25 Quando vocês tiverem filhos e netos, e já estiverem a muito tempo na terra, e se corromperem e fizerem ídolos de qualquer tipo, fazendo o que o Senhor, o seu Deus, reprova, provocando a sua ira,26 invoco hoje o céu e a terra como testemunhas contra vocês de que vocês serão rapidamente eliminados da terra, da qual estão tomando posse ao atravessar o Jordão. Vocês não viverão muito ali; serão totalmente destruídos.27 O Senhor os espalhará entre os povos, e restarão apenas alguns de vocês entre as nações às quais o Senhor os levará.28 Lá vocês prestarão culto a deuses de madeira e de pedra, deuses feitos por mãos humanas, deuses que não podem ver, nem ouvir, nem comer, nem cheirar.29 E lá procurarão o Senhor, o seu Deus, e o acharão, se o procurarem de todo o seu coração e de toda a sua alma.30 Quando vocês estiverem sofrendo e todas essas coisas tiverem acontecido com vocês, então, em dias futuros, vocês voltarão para o Senhor, o seu Deus, e lhe obedecerão.31 Pois o Senhor, o seu Deus, é Deus misericordioso; ele não os abandonará, nem os destruirá nem se esquecerá da aliança que com juramento fez com os seus antepassados.32 Perguntem, agora, aos tempos antigos, antes de vocês existirem, desde o dia em que Deus criou o homem sobre a terra. Perguntem de um lado ao outro do céu: Já aconteceu algo tão grandioso ou já se ouviu algo parecido?33 Que povo ouviu a voz de Deus falando do meio do fogo, como vocês ouviram, e continua vivo?34 Ou que deus decidiu tirar uma nação do meio de outra para lhe pertencer, com provas, sinais, maravilhas e lutas, com mão poderosa e braço forte, e com feitos temíveis e grandiosos, conforme tudo o que o Senhor fez por vocês no Egito, como vocês viram com os seus próprios olhos?35 Tudo isso foi mostrado a vocês para que soubessem que o Senhor é Deus; e que não há outro além dele.36 Do céu ele fez com que vocês ouvissem a sua voz, para discipliná-los. Na terra, mostrou-lhes o seu grande fogo, e vocês ouviram as suas palavras vindas do meio do fogo.37 E porque amou os seus antepassados e escolheu a descendência deles, ele foi em pessoa tirá-los do Egito com o seu grande poder,38 para expulsar diante de vocês nações maiores e mais fortes, a fim de fazê-los entrar e possuir como herança a terra deles, como hoje se vê.39 Reconheçam isso hoje, e ponham no coração que o Senhor é Deus em cima nos céus e embaixo na terra. Não há nenhum outro.40 Obedeçam aos seus decretos e mandamentos que hoje eu lhes ordeno, para que tudo vá bem com vocês e com seus descendentes, e para que vivam muito tempo na terra que o Senhor, o seu Deus, lhes dá para sempre.41 Então Moisés separou três cidades a leste do Jordão,42 para onde poderia fugir quem tivesse matado alguém sem intenção e sem premeditação. O perseguido poderia fugir para uma dessas cidades a fim de salvar a vida.43 As cidades eram as seguintes: Bezer, no planalto do deserto, para a tribo de Rúben; Ramote, em Gileade, para a tribo de Gade; e Golã, em Basã, para a tribo de Manassés.44 Esta é a lei que Moisés apresentou aos israelitas.45 Estes são os mandamentos, os decretos e as ordenanças que Moisés promulgou como leis para os israelitas quando saíram do Egito,46 do outro lado do Jordão, no vale fronteiro a Bete-Peor, na terra de Seom, rei dos amorreus, que habitava em Hesbom, a quem Moisés e os israelitas derrotaram quando saíram do Egito.47 Eles tomaram posse da terra dele e da terra de Ogue, rei de Basã, os dois reis amorreus que viviam a leste do Jordão.48 Essa terra estendia-se desde Aroer, na margem do ribeiro do Arnom, até o monte Siom, isto é, o Hermom,49 e incluía toda a região da Arabá, a leste do Jordão, até o mar da Arabá, abaixo das encostas do Pisga.

1 And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and to the ordinances, which I teach you{+}, to do them; that you{+} may live, and go in and possess the land which Yahweh, the God of your{+} fathers, gives you{+}.2 You{+} will not add to the word which I command you{+}, neither will you{+} diminish from it, that you{+} may keep the commandments of Yahweh your{+} God which I command you{+}.3 Your{+} eyes have seen what Yahweh did because of Baal-peor; for all the men who followed Baal-peor, Yahweh your God has destroyed them from the midst of you.4 But you{+} who stuck to Yahweh your{+} God are alive every one of you{+} this day.5 Look, I have taught you{+} statutes and ordinances, even as Yahweh my God commanded me, that you{+} should do so in the midst of the land where you{+} go in to possess it.6 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your{+} wisdom and your{+} understanding in the sight of the peoples, that will hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.7 For what great nation is there, that has a god so near to them, as Yahweh our God is whenever we call on him?8 And what great nation is there, that has statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law, which I set before you{+} this day?9 Only you be careful and keep your soul diligently, or else you will forget the things which your eyes saw, and they will depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your sons and the sons of your sons;10 the day that you stood before Yahweh your God in Horeb, when Yahweh said to me, Assemble the people to me, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their sons.11 And you{+} came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire to the heart of heaven, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness.12 And Yahweh spoke to you{+} out of the midst of the fire: you{+} heard the voice of words, but you{+} saw no form; [you{+} heard] only a voice.13 And he declared to you{+} his covenant, which he commanded you{+} to perform, even the ten commandments; and he wrote them on two tables of stone.14 And Yahweh commanded me at that time to teach you{+} statutes and ordinances, that you{+} might do them in the land where you{+} go over to possess it.15 Therefore take{+} good heed to yourselves; for you{+} saw no manner of form on the day that Yahweh spoke to you{+} in Horeb out of the midst of the fire.16 Or else you{+} will corrupt yourselves, and make you{+} a graven image in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female,17 the likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the heavens,18 the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth.19 Or else you will lift up your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, even all the host of heaven, you will be drawn away and worship them, and serve them, which Yahweh your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven.20 But Yahweh has taken you{+}, and brought you{+} forth out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be to him a people of inheritance, as at this day.21 Furthermore Yahweh was angry with me for your{+} sakes, and swore that I should not go over the Jordan, and that I should not go in to that good land, which Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance:22 but I must die in this land, I must not go over the Jordan; but you{+} will go over, and possess that good land.23 Take heed to yourselves, or else you{+} will forget the covenant of Yahweh your{+} God, which he made with you{+}, and make a graven image in the form of anything which Yahweh your God has forbidden you.24 For Yahweh your God is a devouring fire, a jealous God.25 When you will beget sons, and sons of sons, and you{+} will have been long in the land, and will corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image in the form of anything, and will do that which is evil in the sight of Yahweh your God, to provoke him to anger;26 I call heaven and earth to witness against you{+} this day, that you{+} will soon completely perish from off the land to where you{+} go over the Jordan to possess it; you{+} will not prolong your{+} days on it, but will be completely destroyed.27 And Yahweh will scatter you{+} among the peoples, and you{+} will be left few in number among the nations, where Yahweh will lead you{+} away.28 And there you{+} will serve gods, the work of man's hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.29 But from there you{+} will seek Yahweh your God, and you will find him, when you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.30 When you are in tribulation, and all these things come upon you, in the latter days you will return to Yahweh your God, and listen to his voice:31 for Yahweh your God is a merciful God; he will not fail you, neither destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which he swore to them.32 Ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and from the one end of heaven to the other, whether there has been [any such thing] as this great thing is, or has been heard like it?33 Did ever a people hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and live?34 Or has any god assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of [another] nation, by trials, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that Yahweh your{+} God did for you{+} in Egypt before your{+} eyes?35 To you it was shown, that you might know that Yahweh he is God; there is no other besides him.36 Out of heaven he made you hear his voice, that he might instruct you: and on earth he made you see his great fire; and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire.37 And because he loved your fathers, therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought you out with his presence, with his great power, out of Egypt;38 to drive out nations from before you greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as at this day.39 Know therefore this day, and lay it to your heart, that Yahweh he is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.40 And you will keep his statutes, and his commandments, which I command you this day, that it may go well with you, and with your sons after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land, which Yahweh your God gives you, forever.41 Then Moses set apart three cities beyond the Jordan toward the sunrising;42 that the manslayer might flee there, that slays his fellow man unawares, and didn't hate him in time past; and that fleeing to one of these cities he might live:43 [namely], Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, for the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.44 And this is the law which Moses set before the sons of Israel:45 these are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which Moses spoke to the sons of Israel, when they came forth out of Egypt,46 beyond the Jordan, in the valley across from Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon, whom Moses and the sons of Israel struck, when they came forth out of Egypt.47 And they took his land in possession, and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan toward the sunrising;48 from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, even to mount Sion (the same is Hermon),49 and all the Arabah beyond the Jordan eastward, even to the sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.
