1 Ouça, ó Israel: Hoje você está atravessando o Jordão para entrar na terra e conquistar nações maiores e mais poderosas do que você, as quais têm cidades grandes, com muros que vão até o céu.2 O povo é forte e alto. São enaquins! Você já ouviu falar deles e até conhece o que se diz: "Quem é capaz de resistir aos enaquins? "3 Esteja, hoje, certo de que o Senhor, o seu Deus, ele mesmo, vai adiante de você como fogo consumidor. Ele os exterminará e os subjugará diante de você. E você os expulsará e os destruirá, como o Senhor lhe prometeu.4 Depois que o Senhor, o seu Deus, os tiver expulsado da presença de você, não diga a si mesmo: "O Senhor nos trouxe aqui para tomarmos posse desta terra por causa da nossa justiça". Não! É devido à impiedade destas nações que o Senhor vai expulsá-las da presença de você.5 Não é por causa de sua justiça ou de sua retidão que você conquistará a terra deles. Mas é por causa da maldade destas nações que o Senhor, o seu Deus, as expulsará de diante de você, para cumprir a palavra que o Senhor prometeu, sob juramento, aos seus antepassados, Abraão, Isaque e Jacó.6 Portanto, esteja certo de que não é por causa de sua justiça que o Senhor seu Deus lhe dá esta boa terra para dela tomar posse, pois você é um povo obstinado.7 Lembrem-se disto e jamais esqueçam como vocês provocaram a ira do Senhor, o seu Deus, no deserto. Desde o dia em que saíram do Egito até chegarem aqui, vocês têm sido rebeldes contra o Senhor.8 Até mesmo em Horebe vocês provocaram o Senhor à ira, e ele ficou furioso, a ponto de querer exterminá-los.9 Quando subi o monte para receber as tábuas de pedra, as tábuas da aliança que o Senhor tinha feito com vocês, fiquei no monte quarenta dias e quarenta noites; não comi pão, nem bebi água.10 O Senhor me deu as duas tábuas de pedra escritas pelo dedo de Deus. Nelas estavam escritas todas as palavras que o Senhor proclamou a vocês no monte, de dentro do fogo, no dia da assembléia.11 Passados os quarenta dias e quarenta noites, o Senhor me deu as duas tábuas de pedra, as tábuas da aliança,12 e me disse: "Desça imediatamente, pois o seu povo, que você tirou do Egito, corrompeu-se. Eles se afastaram bem depressa do caminho que eu lhes ordenei e fizeram um ídolo de metal para si".13 E o Senhor me disse: "Vejo que este povo é realmente um povo obstinado!14 Deixe que eu os destrua e apague o nome deles de debaixo do céu. E farei de você uma nação mais forte e mais numerosa do que eles".15 Então voltei e desci do monte, enquanto este ardia em chamas. E as duas tábuas da aliança estavam em minhas mãos.16 E vi que vocês tinham pecado contra o Senhor, o Deus de vocês. Fizeram para si um ídolo de metal em forma de bezerro. Bem depressa vocês se desviaram do caminho que o Senhor, o Deus de vocês, lhes tinha ordenado.17 Então peguei as duas tábuas e as lancei das minhas mãos, quebrando-as diante dos olhos de vocês.18 Depois prostrei-me perante o Senhor outros quarenta dias e quarenta noites; não comi pão, nem bebi água, por causa do grande pecado que vocês tinham cometido, fazendo o que o Senhor reprova, provocando a ira dele.19 Tive medo da ira e do furor do Senhor, pois ele estava suficientemente irado para destruí-los, mas de novo o Senhor me escutou.20 O Senhor irou-se contra Arão a ponto de querer destruí-lo, mas naquela ocasião também orei por Arão.21 Então peguei o bezerro, o bezerro do pecado de vocês, e o queimei no fogo; depois o esmigalhei e o moí até virar pó, e o joguei no riacho que desce do monte.22 Além disso, vocês tornaram a provocar o Senhor à ira em Taberá, em Massá e em Quibrote-Hataavá.23 E, quando o Senhor os enviou de Cades-Barnéia, disse: "Entrem lá e tomem posse da terra que lhes dei". Mas vocês se rebelaram contra a ordem do Senhor, do seu Deus. Não confiaram nele, nem lhe obedeceram.24 Vocês têm sido rebeldes contra o Senhor desde que os conheço.25 Fiquei prostrado perante o Senhor durante aqueles quarenta dias e quarenta noites porque o Senhor tinha dito que ia destruí-los.26 Foi quando orei ao Senhor, dizendo: Ó Soberano Senhor, não destruas o teu povo, a tua própria herança! Tu o redimiste com a tua grandeza e o tiraste da terra do Egito com mão poderosa.27 Lembra-te de teus servos Abraão, Isaque e Jacó. Não leves em conta a obstinação deste povo, a sua maldade e o seu pecado,28 se não os habitantes da terra de onde nos tiraste dirão: "Como o Senhor não conseguiu levá-los à terra que lhes havia prometido, e como ele os odiava, tirou-os para fazê-los morrer no deserto".29 Mas eles são o teu povo, a tua herança, que tiraste do Egito com o teu grande poder e com o teu braço forte.

1 Hear, O Israel: you are to pass over the Jordan this day, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven,2 a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you have heard it said, Who can stand before the sons of Anak?3 Know therefore this day, that Yahweh your God is he who goes over before you as a devouring fire; he will destroy them, and he will bring them down before you: so you will drive them out, and make them to perish quickly, as Yahweh has spoken to you.4 Don't speak in your heart, after that Yahweh your God has thrust them out from before you, saying, For my righteousness Yahweh has brought me in to possess this land; whereas for the wickedness of these nations Yahweh does drive them out from before you.5 Not for your righteousness, or for the uprightness of your heart, do you go in to possess their land; but for the wickedness of these nations Yahweh your God does drive them out from before you, and that he may establish the word which Yahweh swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.6 Know therefore, that Yahweh your God doesn't give you this good land to possess it for your righteousness; for you are a stiff-necked people.7 Remember, don't you forget, how you provoked Yahweh your God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that you went forth out of the land of Egypt, until you{+} came to this place, you{+} have been rebellious against Yahweh.8 Also in Horeb you{+} provoked Yahweh to wrath, and Yahweh was angry with you{+} to destroy you{+}.9 When I went up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which Yahweh made with you{+}, then I remained in the mount forty days and forty nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water.10 And Yahweh delivered to me the two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them [was written] according to all the words, which Yahweh spoke with you{+} in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.11 And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that Yahweh gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant.12 And Yahweh said to me, Arise, get down quickly from here; for your people that you have brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they have quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made themselves a molten image.13 Furthermore Yahweh spoke to me, saying, I have seen this people, and, look, it is a stiff-necked people:14 let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.15 So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount was burning with fire: and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands.16 And I looked, and saw that you{+} had sinned against Yahweh your{+} God; you{+} had made yourselves a molten calf: you{+} had turned aside quickly out of the way which Yahweh had commanded you{+}.17 And I took hold of the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before your{+} eyes.18 And I fell down before Yahweh, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water; because of all your{+} sin which you{+} sinned, in doing that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, to provoke him to anger.19 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, with which Yahweh was angry against you{+} to destroy you{+}. But Yahweh listened to me that time also.20 And Yahweh was very angry with Aaron to destroy him: and I prayed for Aaron also at the same time.21 And I took your{+} sin, the calf which you{+} had made, and burnt it with fire, and stamped it, grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust: and I cast its dust into the brook that descended out of the mount.22 And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah, you{+} provoked Yahweh to wrath.23 And when Yahweh sent you{+} from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you{+}; then you{+} rebelled against the commandment of Yahweh your{+} God, and you{+} didn't believe him, nor listen to his voice.24 You{+} have been rebellious against Yahweh from the day that he knew you{+}.25 So I fell down before Yahweh the forty days and forty nights that I fell down, because Yahweh had said he would destroy you{+}.26 And I prayed to Yahweh, and said, O Sovereign Yahweh, don't destroy your people and your inheritance, that you have redeemed through your greatness, that you have brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand.27 Remember your slaves, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; don't look to the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin,28 or else the land from where you brought us out will say, Because Yahweh wasn't able to bring them into the land which he promised to them, and because he hated them, he has brought them out to slay them in the wilderness.29 Yet they are your people and your inheritance, which you brought out by your great power and by your outstretched arm.
