1 Pedro, apóstolo de Jesus Cristo, aos eleitos de Deus, peregrinos dispersos no Ponto, na Galácia, na Capadócia, na província da Ásia e na Bitínia,2 escolhidos de acordo com a pré-conhecimento de Deus Pai, pela obra santificadora do Espírito, para a obediência a Jesus Cristo e a aspersão do seu sangue: Graça e paz lhes sejam multiplicadas.3 Bendito seja o Deus e Pai de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo! Conforme a sua grande misericórdia, ele nos regenerou para uma esperança viva, por meio da ressurreição de Jesus Cristo dentre os mortos,4 para uma herança que jamais poderá perecer, macular-se ou perder o seu valor. Herança guardada nos céus para vocês5 que, mediante a fé, são protegidos pelo poder de Deus até chegar a salvação prestes a ser revelada no último tempo.6 Nisso vocês exultam, ainda que agora, por um pouco de tempo, devam ser entristecidos por todo tipo de provação.7 Assim acontece para que fique comprovado que a fé que vocês têm, muito mais valiosa do que o ouro que perece, mesmo que refinado pelo fogo, é genuína e resultará em louvor, glória e honra, quando Jesus Cristo for revelado.8 Mesmo não o tendo visto, vocês o amam; e apesar de não o verem agora, crêem nele e exultam com alegria indizível e gloriosa,9 pois vocês estão alcançando o alvo da sua fé, a salvação das suas almas.10 Foi a respeito dessa salvação que os profetas que falaram da graça destinada a vocês investigaram e examinaram,11 procurando saber o tempo e as circunstâncias para os quais apontava o Espírito de Cristo que neles estava, quando lhes predisse os sofrimentos de Cristo e as glórias que se seguiriam àqueles sofrimentos.12 A eles foi revelado que estavam ministrando, não para si próprios, mas para vocês, quando falaram das coisas que agora lhes foram anunciadas por meio daqueles que lhes pregaram o evangelho pelo Espírito Santo enviado do céu; coisas que até os anjos anseiam observar.13 Portanto, estejam com a mente preparada, prontos para a ação; sejam sóbrios e coloquem toda a esperança na graça que lhes será dada quando Jesus Cristo for revelado.14 Como filhos obedientes, não se deixem amoldar pelos maus desejos de outrora, quando viviam na ignorância.15 Mas, assim como é santo aquele que os chamou, sejam santos vocês também em tudo o que fizerem,16 pois está escrito: "Sejam santos, porque eu sou santo".17 Uma vez que vocês chamam Pai aquele que julga imparcialmente as obras de cada um, portem-se com temor durante a jornada terrena de vocês.18 Pois vocês sabem que não foi por meio de coisas perecíveis como prata ou ouro que vocês foram redimidos da sua maneira vazia de viver que lhes foi transmitida por seus antepassados,19 mas pelo precioso sangue de Cristo, como de um cordeiro sem mancha e sem defeito,20 conhecido antes da criação do mundo, revelado nestes últimos tempos em favor de vocês.21 Por meio dele vocês crêem em Deus, que o ressuscitou dentre os mortos e o glorificou, de modo que a fé e a esperança de vocês estão em Deus.22 Agora que vocês purificaram as suas vidas pela obediência à verdade, visando ao amor fraternal e sincero, amem sinceramente uns aos outros e de todo o coração.23 Pois vocês foram regenerados, não de uma semente perecível, mas imperecível, por meio da palavra de Deus, viva e permanente.24 Pois, "toda a humanidade é como a relva, e toda a sua glória, como a flor da relva; a relva murcha e cai a sua flor,25 mas a palavra do Senhor permanece para sempre". Essa é a palavra que lhes foi anunciada.

1 Peter, an Apostle of Jesus Christ: To God's own people scattered over the earth, who are living as foreigners in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Roman Asia, and Bithynia,2 chosen in accordance with the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, with a view to their obedience and to their being sprinkled with the blood of Jesus Christ. May more and more grace and peace be granted to you.3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in His great mercy has begotten us anew to an ever-living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,4 to an inheritance imperishable, undefiled and unfading, which has been reserved in Heaven for you,5 whom God in His power is guarding through faith for a salvation that even now stands ready for unveiling at the End of the Age.6 Rejoice triumphantly in the prospect of this, even if now, for a short time, you are compelled to sorrow amid various trials.7 The sorrow comes in order that the testing of your faith –being more precious than that of gold, which perishes and yet is proved by fire– may be found to result in praise and glory and honour at the re-appearing of Jesus Christ.8 Him you love, though your eyes have never looked on Him. In Him, though at present you cannot see Him, you nevertheless trust, and triumph with a joy which is unspeakable and is crowned with glory,9 while you are securing as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.10 There were Prophets who earnestly inquired about that salvation, and closely searched into it–even those who spoke beforehand of the grace which was to come to you.11 They were eager to know the time which the Spirit of Christ within them kept indicating, or the characteristics of that time, when they solemnly made known beforehand the sufferings that were to come upon Christ and the glories which would follow.12 To them it was revealed that they were serving not themselves but you, when they foretold the very things which have now been openly declared to you by those who, having been taught by the Holy Spirit which had been sent from Heaven, brought you the Good News. Angels long to stoop and look into these things.13 Therefore gird up your minds and fix your hopes calmly and unfalteringly upon the boon that is soon to be yours, at the re-appearing of Jesus Christ.14 And, since you delight in obedience, do not shape your lives by the cravings which used to dominate you in the time of your ignorance,15 but –in imitation of the holy One who has called you– you also must be holy in all your habits of life.16 Because it stands written, »You are to be holy, because I am holy.«17 And if you address as your Father Him who judges impartially in accordance with each man's actions, then spend in fear the time of your stay here on earth,18 knowing, as you do, that it was not with a ransom of perishable wealth, such as silver or gold, that you were set free from your frivolous habits of life which had been handed down to you from your forefathers,19 but with the precious blood of Christ–as of an unblemished and spotless lamb.20 He was pre-destined indeed to this work, even before the creation of the world, but has been plainly manifested in these last days for the sake of you who, through Him,21 are faithful to God, who raised Him from among the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are resting upon God.22 Now that, through your obedience to the truth, you have purified your souls for cherishing sincere brotherly love, you must love another heartily and fervently.23 For you have been begotten again by God's ever-living and enduring word from a germ not of perishable, but of imperishable life.24 »All mankind resemble the herbage, and all their beauty is like its flowers. The herbage dries up, and its flowers drop off;«25 But the word of the Lord remains for ever.« And that means the Message which has been proclaimed among you in the Good News.
