1 Do mesmo modo, mulheres, sujeitem-se a seus maridos, a fim de que, se alguns deles não obedecem à palavra, sejam ganhos sem palavras, pelo procedimento de sua mulher,2 observando a conduta honesta e respeitosa de vocês.3 A beleza de vocês não deve estar nos enfeites exteriores, como cabelos trançados e jóias de ouro ou roupas finas.4 Pelo contrário, esteja no ser interior, que não perece, beleza demonstrada num espírito dócil e tranqüilo, o que é de grande valor para Deus.5 Pois era assim que também costumavam adornar-se as santas mulheres do passado, que colocavam a sua esperança em Deus. Elas se sujeitavam a seus maridos,6 como Sara, que obedecia a Abraão e lhe chamava senhor. Dela vocês serão filhas, se praticarem o bem e não derem lugar ao medo.7 Do mesmo modo vocês, maridos, sejam sábios no convívio com suas mulheres e tratem-nas com honra, como parte mais frágil e co-herdeiras do dom da graça da vida, de forma que não sejam interrompidas as suas orações.8 Quanto ao mais, tenham todos o mesmo modo de pensar, sejam compassivos, amem-se fraternalmente, sejam misericordiosos e humildes.9 Não retribuam mal com mal nem insulto com insulto; pelo contrário, bendigam; pois para isso vocês foram chamados, para receberem bênção por herança.10 Pois, "quem quiser amar a vida e ver dias felizes, guarde a sua língua do mal e os seus lábios da falsidade.11 Afaste-se do mal e faça o bem; busque a paz com perseverança.12 Porque os olhos do Senhor estão sobre os justos e os seus ouvidos estão atentos à sua oração, mas o rosto do Senhor volta-se contra os que praticam o mal".13 Quem há de maltratá-los, se vocês forem zelosos na prática do bem?14 Todavia, mesmo que venham a sofrer porque praticam a justiça, vocês serão felizes. "Não temam aquilo que eles temem, não fiquem amedrontados. "15 Antes, santifiquem Cristo como Senhor no coração. Estejam sempre preparados para responder a qualquer que lhes pedir a razão da esperança que há em vocês.16 Contudo, façam isso com mansidão e respeito, conservando boa consciência, de forma que os que falam maldosamente contra o bom procedimento de vocês, porque estão em Cristo, fiquem envergonhados de suas calúnias.17 É melhor sofrer por fazer o bem, se for da vontade de Deus, do que por fazer o mal.18 Pois também Cristo sofreu pelos pecados uma vez por todas, o justo pelos injustos, para conduzir-nos a Deus. Ele foi morto no corpo, mas vivificado pelo Espírito,19 no qual também foi e pregou aos espíritos em prisão20 que há muito tempo desobederam, quando Deus esperava pacientemente nos dias de Noé, enquanto a arca era construída. Nela apenas algumas pessoas, a saber, oito, foram salvas por meio da água,21 e isso é representado pelo batismo que agora também salva vocês — não a remoção da sujeira do corpo, mas o compromisso de uma boa consciência diante de Deus — por meio da ressurreição de Jesus Cristo,22 que subiu ao céu e está à direita de Deus; a ele estão sujeitos anjos, autoridades e poderes.

1 Married women, in the same way, be submissive to your husbands, so that even if some of them disbelieve the Message, they may, apart from the Message, be won over by the daily life of their wives, after watching your daily life–2 so full of reverence, and so blameless!3 Your adornment ought not to be a merely outward thing–one of plaiting the hair, putting on jewelry, or wearing beautiful dresses.4 Instead of that, it should be a new nature within–the imperishable ornament of a gentle and peaceful spirit, which is indeed precious in the sight of God.5 For in ancient times also this was the way the holy women who set their hopes upon God used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their husbands.6 Thus, for instance, Sarah obeyed Abraham, acknowledging his authority over her. And you have become Sarah's children if you do what is right and permit nothing whatever to terrify you.7 Married men, in the same way, live with your wives with a clear recognition of the fact that they are weaker than you. Yet, since you are heirs with them of God's free gift of Life, treat them with honour; so that your prayers may not be hindered.8 In conclusion, all of you should be of one mind, quick to sympathize, kind to the brethren, tenderhearted, lowly-minded,9 not requiting evil with evil nor abuse with abuse, but, on the contrary, giving a blessing in return, because a blessing is what you have been called by God to inherit.10 For »He who wishes to be well-satisfied with life and see happy days– let him restrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from deceitful words;11 Let him turn from evil, and do good; Let him inquire for peace and go in pursuit of it.12 For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and His ears are open to their supplication; but the face of the Lord is set against evil-doers.«13 And who will be able to harm you, if you show yourselves zealous for that which is good?14 But even if you suffer for righteousness' sake, you are to be envied. So do not be alarmed by their threats, nor troubled;15 but in your hearts consecrate Christ as Lord, being always ready to make your defence to any one who asks from you a reason for the hope which you cherish.16 Yet argue modestly and cautiously, keeping your consciences free from guilt, so that, when you are spoken against, those who slander your good Christian lives may be put to shame.17 For it is better that you should suffer for doing right, if such be God's will, than for doing evil;18 because Christ also once for all died for sins, the innocent One for the guilty many, in order to bring us to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit,19 in which He also went and proclaimed His Message to the spirits that were in prison,20 who in ancient times had been disobedient, while God's longsuffering was patiently waiting in the days of Noah during the building of the Ark, in which a few persons –eight in number– were brought safely through the water.21 And, corresponding to that figure, the water of baptism now saves you –not the washing off of material defilement, but the craving of a good conscience after God– through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,22 who is at God's right hand, having gone into Heaven, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him.
