1 Irmãos, quanto à vinda de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo e à nossa reencontro com ele, rogamos a vocês2 que não se deixem abalar nem alarmar tão facilmente, quer por profecia, quer por palavra, quer por carta supostamente vinda de nós, como se o dia do Senhor já tivesse chegado.3 Não deixem que ninguém os engane de modo algum. Antes daquele dia virá a apostasia e, então, será revelado o homem do pecado, o filho da perdição.4 Este se opõe e se exalta acima de tudo o que se chama Deus ou é objeto de adoração, a ponto de se assentar no santuário de Deus, proclamando que ele mesmo é Deus.5 Não se lembram de que quando eu ainda estava com vocês costumava lhes falar essas coisas?6 E agora vocês sabem o que o está detendo, para que ele seja revelado no seu devido tempo.7 A verdade é que o mistério da iniqüidade já está em ação, restando apenas que seja afastado aquele que agora o detém.8 Então será revelado o perverso, a quem o Senhor Jesus matará com o sopro de sua boca e destruirá pela manifestação de sua vinda.9 A vinda desse perverso é segundo a ação de Satanás, com todo o poder, com sinais e com maravilhas enganadoras.10 Ele fará uso de todas as formas de engano da injustiça para os que estão perecendo, porquanto rejeitaram o amor à verdade que os poderia salvar.11 Por essa razão Deus lhes envia um poder sedutor, a fim de que creiam na mentira,12 e sejam condenados todos os que não creram na verdade, mas tiveram prazer na injustiça.13 Mas nós, devemos sempre dar graças a Deus por vocês, irmãos amados pelo Senhor, porque desde o princípio Deus os escolheu para serem salvos mediante a obra santificadora do Espírito e a fé na verdade.14 Ele os chamou para isso por meio de nosso evangelho, a fim de tomarem posse da glória de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo.15 Portanto, irmãos, permaneçam firmes e apeguem-se às tradições que lhes foram ensinadas, quer de viva voz, quer por carta nossa.16 Que o próprio Senhor Jesus Cristo e Deus nosso Pai, que nos amou e nos deu eterna consolação e boa esperança pela graça,17 dê ânimo aos seus corações e os fortaleça para fazerem sempre o bem, tanto em atos como em palavras.

1 But with respect to the Coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to meet Him, we entreat you, brethren,2 not readily to become unsettled in mind or troubled –either by any pretended spiritual revelation or by any message or letter claiming to have been sent by us– through fancying that the day of the Lord is now here.3 Let no one in any way deceive you, for that day cannot come without the coming of the apostasy first, and the appearing of the man of sin, the son of perdition, who sets himself against,4 and exalts himself above, every so-called `god' or object of worship, and goes the length of taking his seat in the very temple of God, giving it out that he himself is God.5 Do you not remember that while I was still with you I used to tell you all this?6 And now you know what restrains him, in order that his true character may be revealed at his appointed time.7 For lawlessness is already at work in secret; but only until the man who is now exercising a restraining influence is removed,8 and then the Lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will sweep away with the tempest of His anger, and utterly overwhelm by the awful splendour of His Coming.9 The appearing of the Lawless one will be attended by various miracles and tokens and delusive marvels –for so Satan works–10 and by every kind of wicked deception for those who are on the way to perdition because they did not welcome into their hearts the love of the truth, so that they might be saved.11 And for this reason God sends them a misleading influence that they may believe the lie;12 in order that all may come under judgement who have refused to believe the truth and have taken pleasure in unrighteousness.13 And from us thanks are always due to God on your behalf –brethren whom the Lord loves– because God from the beginning has chosen you for salvation through the Spirit's sanctifying influence and your belief in the truth.14 To this blessing God has called you by our Good News, so that you may have a share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.15 So then, brethren, stand your ground, and hold fast to the teachings which you have received from us, whether by word of mouth or by letter.16 And may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself –and God our Father who has loved us and has given us in His grace eternal consolation and a bright hope–17 comfort your hearts and make you stedfast in every good work and word.
