1 Um homem chamado Ananias, juntamente com Safira, sua mulher, também vendeu uma propriedade.2 Ele reteve parte do dinheiro para si, sabendo disso também sua mulher; e o restante levou e colocou aos pés dos apóstolos.3 Então perguntou Pedro: "Ananias, como você permitiu que Satanás enchesse o seu coração, a ponto de você mentir ao Espírito Santo e guardar para si uma parte do dinheiro que recebeu pela propriedade?4 Ela não lhe pertencia? E, depois de vendida, o dinheiro não estava em seu poder? O que o levou a pensar em fazer tal coisa? Você não mentiu aos homens, mas sim a Deus".5 Ouvindo isso, Ananias caiu e morreu. Grande temor apoderou-se de todos os que ouviram o que tinha acontecido.6 Então os moços vieram, envolveram seu corpo, levaram-no para fora e o sepultaram.7 Cerca de três horas mais tarde, entrou sua mulher, sem saber o que havia acontecido.8 Pedro lhe perguntou: "Diga-me, foi esse o preço que vocês conseguiram pela propriedade? " Respondeu ela: "Sim, foi esse mesmo".9 Pedro lhe disse: "Por que vocês entraram em acordo para tentar o Espírito do Senhor? Veja! Estão à porta os pés dos que sepultaram seu marido, e eles a levarão também".10 Naquele mesmo instante, ela caiu aos pés dele e morreu. Então os moços entraram e, encontrando-a morta, levaram-na e a sepultaram ao lado de seu marido.11 E grande temor apoderou-se de toda a igreja e de todos os que ouviram falar desses acontecimentos.12 Os apóstolos realizavam muitos sinais e maravilhas entre o povo. Todos os que creram costumavam reunir-se no Pórtico de Salomão.13 Dos demais, ninguém ousava juntar-se a eles, embora o povo os tivesse em alto conceito.14 Em número cada vez maior, homens e mulheres criam no Senhor e lhes eram acrescentados,15 de modo que o povo também levava os doentes às ruas e os colocava em camas e macas, para que pelo menos a sombra de Pedro se projetasse sobre alguns, enquanto ele passava.16 Afluíam também multidões das cidades próximas a Jerusalém, trazendo seus doentes e os que eram atormentados por espíritos imundos; e todos eram curados.17 Então o sumo sacerdote e todos os seus companheiros, membros do partido dos saduceus, ficaram cheios de inveja.18 Por isso, mandaram prender os apóstolos, colocando-os numa prisão pública.19 Mas durante a noite um anjo do Senhor abriu as portas do cárcere, levou-os para fora e20 disse: "Dirijam-se ao templo e relatem ao povo toda a mensagem desta Vida".21 Ao amanhecer, eles entraram no pátio do templo, como haviam sido instruídos, e começaram a ensinar o povo. Quando chegaram o sumo sacerdote e os que os seus companheiros, convocaram o Sinédrio — toda a assembléia dos líderes religiosos de Israel — e mandaram buscar os apóstolos na prisão.22 Todavia, ao chegarem à prisão, os guardas não os encontraram ali. Então, voltaram e relataram:23 "Encontramos a prisão trancada com toda a segurança, com os guardas diante das portas; mas, quando as abrimos não havia ninguém".24 Diante desse relato, o capitão da guarda do templo e os chefes dos sacerdotes ficaram perplexos, imaginando o que teria acontecido.25 Nesse momento chegou alguém e disse: "Os homens que os senhores puseram na prisão estão no pátio do templo, ensinando o povo".26 Então, indo para lá com os guardas, o capitão trouxe os apóstolos, mas sem o uso de força, pois temiam que o povo os apedrejasse.27 Tendo levado os apóstolos, apresentaram-nos ao Sinédrio para serem interrogados pelo sumo sacerdote,28 que lhes disse: "Demos ordens expressas a vocês para que não ensinassem neste nome. Todavia, vocês encheram Jerusalém com sua doutrina e nos querem tornar culpados do sangue desse homem".29 Pedro e os outros apóstolos responderam: "É preciso obedecer antes a Deus do que aos homens!30 O Deus dos nossos antepassados ressuscitou Jesus, a quem os senhores mataram, suspendendo-o num madeiro.31 Deus o exaltou, colocando-o à sua direita como Príncipe e Salvador, para dar a Israel arrependimento e perdão de pecados.32 Nós somos testemunhas destas coisas, bem como o Espírito Santo, que Deus concedeu aos que lhe obedecem".33 Ouvindo isso, eles ficaram furiosos e queriam matá-los.34 Mas um fariseu chamado Gamaliel, mestre da lei, respeitado por todo o povo, levantou-se no Sinédrio e pediu que os homens fossem retirados por um momento.35 Então lhes disse: "Israelitas, considerem cuidadosamente o que pretendem fazer a esses homens.36 Há algum tempo, apareceu Teudas, reivindicando ser alguém, e cerca de quatrocentos homens se juntaram a ele. Ele foi morto, todos os seus seguidores se dispersaram e acabaram em nada.37 Depois dele, nos dias do recenseamento, apareceu Judas, o galileu, que liderou um grupo em rebelião. Ele também foi morto, e todos os seus seguidores foram dispersos.38 Portanto, neste caso eu os aconselho: deixem esses homens em paz e soltem-nos. Se o propósito ou atividade deles for de origem humana, fracassará;39 se proceder de Deus, vocês não serão capazes de impedi-los, pois se acharão lutando contra Deus".40 Eles foram convencidos pelo discurso de Gamaliel. Chamaram os apóstolos e mandaram açoitá-los. Depois, ordenaram-lhes que não falassem em nome de Jesus e os deixaram sair em liberdade.41 Os apóstolos saíram do Sinédrio, alegres por terem sido considerados dignos de serem humilhados por causa do Nome.42 Todos os dias, no templo e de casa em casa, não deixavam de ensinar e proclamar que Jesus é o Cristo.

1 There was a man of the name of Ananias who, with his wife Sapphira, sold some property but,2 with her full knowledge and consent, dishonestly kept back part of the price which he received for it, though he brought the rest and gave it to the Apostles.3 »Ananias,« said Peter, »why has Satan taken possession of your heart, that you should try to deceive the Holy Spirit and dishonestly keep back part of the price paid you for this land?4 While it remained unsold, was not the land your own? And when sold, was it not at your own disposal? How is it that you have cherished this design in your heart? It is not to men you have told this lie, but to God.«5 Upon hearing these words Ananias fell down dead, and all who heard the words were awe-struck.6 The younger men, however, rose, and wrapping the body up, carried it out and buried it.7 About three hours had passed, when his wife came in, knowing nothing of what had happened.8 Peter at once questioned her. »Tell me,« he said, »whether you sold the land for so much.«»Yes,« she replied, »for so much.«9 »How was it,« replied Peter, »that you two agreed to try an experiment upon the Spirit of the Lord? The men who have buried your husband are already at the door, and they will carry you out.«10 Instantly she fell down dead at his feet, and the young men came in and found her dead. So they carried her out and buried her by her husband's side.11 This incident struck terror into the whole Church, and into the hearts of all who heard of it.12 Many signs and marvels continued to be done among the people by the Apostles; and by common consent they all met in Solomon's Portico.13 But none of the others dared to attach themselves to them. Yet the people held them in high honour–14 and more and more believers in the Lord joined them, including great numbers both of men and women–15 so that they would even bring out their sick friends into the streets and lay them on light couches or mats, in order that when Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on one or other of them.16 The inhabitants, too, of the towns in the neighbourhood of Jerusalem came in crowds, bringing sick persons and some who were harassed by foul spirits, and they were cured, one and all.17 This roused the High Priest. He and all his party –the sect of the Sadducees– were filled with angry jealousy18 and laid hands upon the Apostles, and put them into the public jail.19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said,20 »Go and stand in the Temple, and go on proclaiming to the people all this Message of Life.«21 Having received that command they went into the Temple, just before daybreak, and began to teach: So when the High Priest and his party came, and had called together the Sanhedrin as well as all the Elders of the descendants of Israel, they sent to the jail to fetch the Apostles.22 But the officers went and could not find them in the prison. So they came back and brought word,23 saying, »The jail we found quite safely locked, and the warders were on guard at the doors, but upon going in we found no one there.«24 When the Commander of the Temple Guards and the High Priests heard this statement, they were utterly at a loss with regard to it, wondering what would happen next.25 And some one came and brought them word, saying, »The men you put in prison are actually in the Temple, standing there, teaching the people.«26 Upon this the Commander went with the officers, and brought the Apostles; but without using violence; for they were afraid of being stoned by the people.27 So they brought them and made them stand in front of the Sanhedrin. And then the High Priest questioned them.28 »We strictly forbad you to teach in that name–did we not?« he said. »And see, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and are trying to make us responsible for that man's death!«29 Peter and the other Apostles replied, »We must obey God rather than man.30 The God of our forefathers has raised Jesus to life, whom you crucified and put to death.31 God has exalted Him to His right hand as Chief Leader and as Saviour, to give Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins.32 And we –and the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him– are witnesses as to these things.«33 Infuriated at getting this answer, they were disposed to kill the Apostles.34 But a Pharisee of the name of Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law, held in honour by all the people, rose from his seat and requested that they should be sent outside the court for a few minutes.35 »Israelites,« he said, »be careful what you are about to do in dealing with these men.36 Years ago Theudas appeared, professing to be a person of importance, and a body of men, some four hundred in number, joined him. He was killed, and all his followers were dispersed and annihilated.37 After him, at the time of the Census, came Judas, the Galilaean, and was the leader in a revolt. He too perished, and all his followers were scattered.38 And now I tell you to hold aloof from these men and leave them alone–for if this scheme or work is of human origin, it will come to nothing.39 But if it is really from God, you will be powerless to put them down–lest perhaps you find yourselves to be actually fighting against God.«40 His advice carried conviction. So they called the Apostles in, and –after flogging them– ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then let them go.41 They, therefore, left the Sanhedrin and went their way, rejoicing that they had been deemed worthy to suffer disgrace on behalf of the NAME.42 But they did not desist from teaching every day, in the Temple or in private houses, and telling the Good News about Jesus, the Christ.
