1 Portanto, livrem-se de toda maldade, todo engano, toda hipocrisia, toda inveja e todo tipo de difamação. 2 Como bebês recém-nascidos, desejem intensamente o puro leite espiritual, para que, por meio dele, cresçam e experimentem plenamente a salvação, 3 agora que provaram da bondade do Senhor.

4 Vocês têm se aproximado de Cristo, a pedra viva. As pessoas o rejeitaram, mas Deus o escolheu para lhe conceder grande honra.

5 E vocês também são pedras vivas, com as quais um templo espiritual é edificado. Além disso, são sacerdotes santos. Por meio de Jesus Cristo, oferecem sacrifícios espirituais que agradam a Deus. 6 Como dizem as Escrituras:

"Ponho em Sião uma pedra angular,

escolhida para grande honra;

quem confiar nela

jamais será envergonhado".

7 Sim, vocês, os que creem, reconhecem a honra que lhe é devida. Mas, para os que não creem,

"A pedra que os construtores rejeitaram

se tornou a pedra angular".

8 E também,

"Ele é a pedra de tropeço,

rocha que faz as pessoas caírem".

Tropeçam porque não obedecem à palavra e, portanto, deparam com o destino planejado para elas.

9 Vocês, porém, são povo escolhido, reino de sacerdotes, nação santa, propriedade exclusiva de Deus. Assim, vocês podem mostrar às pessoas como é admirável aquele que os chamou das trevas para sua maravilhosa luz.

10 "Antes vocês não tinham identidade como povo,

agora são povo de Deus.

Antes não haviam recebido misericórdia,

agora receberam misericórdia de Deus."

11 Amados, eu os advirto, como peregrinos e estrangeiros que são, a manter distância dos desejos carnais que lutam contra a alma. 12 Procurem viver de maneira exemplar entre os que não creem. Assim, mesmo que eles os acusem de praticar o mal, verão seu comportamento correto e darão glória a Deus quando ele julgar o mundo.

13 Por causa do Senhor, submetam-se a todas as autoridades humanas, seja o rei como autoridade máxima, 14 sejam os oficiais nomeados e enviados por ele para castigar os que fazem o mal e honrar os que fazem o bem.

15 É da vontade de Deus que, pela prática do bem, vocês calem os ignorantes que os acusam falsamente. 16 Pois vocês são livres e, no entanto, são escravos de Deus; não usem sua liberdade como desculpa para fazer o mal. 17 Tratem todos com respeito e amem seus irmãos em Cristo. Temam a Deus e respeitem o rei.

18 Vocês, escravos, submetam-se a seu senhor com todo o respeito. Façam o que ele mandar, não apenas se for bondoso e amável, mas até mesmo se for cruel. 19 Porque Deus se agrada de vocês quando, conscientes da vontade dele, suportam com paciência o tratamento injusto. 20 Claro que não há mérito algum em ser paciente quando são açoitados por terem feito o mal. Mas, se sofrem por terem feito o bem e suportam com paciência, Deus se agrada de vocês.

21 Porque Deus os chamou para fazerem o bem, mesmo que isso resulte em sofrimento, pois Cristo sofreu por vocês. Ele é seu exemplo; sigam seus passos.

22 Ele nunca pecou,

nem enganou ninguém.

23 Não revidou quando foi insultado,

nem ameaçou se vingar quando sofreu,

mas deixou seu caso nas mãos de Deus,

que sempre julga com justiça.

24 Ele mesmo carregou nossos pecados

em seu corpo na cruz,

a fim de que morrêssemos para o pecado

e vivêssemos para a justiça;

por suas feridas somos curados.

25 Vocês eram como ovelhas desgarradas,

mas agora voltaram para o Pastor,

o Guardião de sua alma.

1 Therefore, rid yourselves of every kind of evil and deception, hypocrisy, jealousy, and every kind of slander.

2 Like newborn babies, thirst for the pure milk of the word so that by it you may grow in your salvation.

3 Surely you have tasted that the Lord is good!

4 As you come to him, the living stone who was rejected by people but was chosen and precious in God's sight,

5 you, too, as living stones, are building yourselves up into a spiritual house and a holy priesthood, so that you may offer spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

6 This is why it says in Scripture: "Look! I am laying a chosenand precious cornerstone in Zion. The one who believes in him will never be ashamed."

7 Therefore he is precious to you who believe, but to those who do not believe, "The stone that the builders rejectedhas become the cornerstone,

8 a stone they stumble over and a rock they trip on."They keep on stumbling because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people to be his very own and to proclaim the wonderful deeds of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

10 Once you were not a people,but now you are the people of God. Once you had not received mercy,but now you have received mercy.

11 Dear friends, I urge you as aliens and exiles to keep on abstaining from the desires of the flesh that wage war against the soul.

12 Continue to live such upright lives among the Gentiles that, when they slander you as evildoers, they may see your good works and glorify God when he visits them in judgment.

13 For the Lord's sake submit yourselves to every human authority: whether to the king as supreme,

14 or to governors who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right.

15 For it is God's will that by doing right you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.

16 Live like free people, and do not use your freedom as an excuse for doing evil. Instead, be God's servants.

17 Show honor to everyone. Keep on loving the brothers, fearing God, and honoring the king.

18 You household servants must submit yourselves to your masters with all fear, not only to those who are kind and fair, but also to those who are unjust.

19 For it is a fine thing if, when moved by your conscience to please God, you suffer patiently when wronged.

20 What credit is it if you sin and patiently receive a beating for it? But if you suffer for doing good and take it patiently, you have God's approval.

21 This is, in fact, what you were called to do, because Christ also suffered for you and left an example for you to follow in his steps.

22 "He never committed a sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth."

23 When he was insulted, he did not retaliate. When he suffered, he did not threaten but made it his habit to commit the matter to the one who judges fairly.

24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to those sins and live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

25 For you were like sheep that kept going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
