1 Nunca fale com dureza a um homem mais velho,*5.1 Ou a um ancião, ou a um presbítero. mas aconselhe-o como faria com seu próprio pai. Quanto aos mais jovens, aconselhe-os como a irmãos. 2 Trate as mulheres mais velhas como trataria sua mãe, e as mais jovens, com toda pureza, como se fossem suas irmãs.

3 Cuide*5.3 Ou Honre. das viúvas que não têm ninguém para ajudá-las. 4 Mas, se elas tiverem filhos ou netos, a primeira responsabilidade deles é mostrar devoção no lar e retribuir aos pais o cuidado recebido. Isso é algo que agrada a Deus.

5 A verdadeira viúva, uma mulher sozinha no mundo, põe sua esperança em Deus. Dia e noite, faz súplicas e orações. 6 Mas a viúva que vive apenas para o prazer está morta, ainda que esteja viva. 7 Dê essas instruções, para que ninguém fique sujeito a críticas.

8 Aqueles que não cuidam dos seus, especialmente dos de sua própria família, negaram a fé e são piores que os descrentes.

9 A viúva incluída na lista para receber sustento deve ter pelo menos sessenta anos e ter sido esposa de um só marido.*5.9 Ou ter sido fiel ao marido, ou ter se casado somente uma vez. 10 Deve ser respeitada pelo bem que praticou, como alguém que soube criar os filhos, foi hospitaleira, serviu o povo santo com humildade,*5.10 Em grego, lavou os pés do povo santo. ajudou os que estavam em dificuldade e sempre se dedicou a fazer o bem.

11 As viúvas mais jovens não devem fazer parte dessa lista, pois, quando seus desejos físicos forem mais fortes que sua devoção a Cristo, desejarão se casar novamente. 12 Assim se tornarão culpadas de quebrar o compromisso que fizeram. 13 Além disso, aprenderão a se tornar ociosas e a andar de casa em casa, fazendo fofoca, intrometendo-se em assuntos alheios e falando do que não devem. 14 Portanto, aconselho que essas viúvas mais jovens se casem de novo, tenham filhos e tomem conta do próprio lar. Então o inimigo não poderá dizer coisa alguma contra elas. 15 Pois, de fato, algumas já se desviaram e agora seguem Satanás.

16 Se alguma irmã na fé tem viúvas na família, deve tomar conta delas e não sobrecarregar a igreja, que assim poderá cuidar das viúvas que estiverem verdadeiramente sozinhas.

17 Os presbíteros*5.17a Ou anciãos. que fazem bem seu trabalho devem receber honra redobrada,*5.17b Ou honorários em dobro. especialmente os que se dedicam arduamente à pregação e ao ensino. 18 Pois as Escrituras dizem: "Não amordacem o boi para impedir que ele coma enquanto debulha os cereais", e também: "Aqueles que trabalham merecem seu salário".*5.18 Dt 25.4; Lc 10.7.

19 Não aceite acusação contra um presbítero*5.19. Ou ancião. sem que seja confirmada por duas ou três testemunhas. 20 Aqueles que pecarem devem ser repreendidos diante de todos, o que servirá de forte advertência para os demais.

21 Ordeno solenemente, na presença de Deus, de Cristo Jesus e dos anjos eleitos que você obedeça a estas instruções sem tomar partido nem demonstrar favoritismo.

22 Não se apresse em nomear um líder.*5.22 Em grego, em impor as mãos. Não participe dos pecados alheios. Mantenha-se puro.

23 Não beba apenas água. Uma vez que você fica doente com frequência, tome um pouco de vinho por causa de seu estômago.

24 Lembre-se de que os pecados de alguns são evidentes, e seu julgamento é inevitável. Há outros, porém, cujos pecados só serão revelados mais tarde. 25 Da mesma forma, as boas obras de alguns são evidentes, e outras, feitas em segredo, um dia serão conhecidas.

1 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; 2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity. 3 Honour widows that are widows indeed. 4 But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God. 5 Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day. 6 But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth. 7 And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless. 8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. 9 Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man, 10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work. 11 But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry; 12 Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith. 13 And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. 14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. 15 For some are already turned aside after Satan. 16 If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed. 17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. 18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward. 19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses. 20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear. 21 I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality. 22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure. 23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities. 24 Some men’s sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they follow after. 25 Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid.
