1 Mais uma vez, a ira do Senhor ardeu contra Israel e incitou Davi contra eles. "Vá e conte o povo de Israel e de Judá", disse-lhe o Senhor.

2 Então o rei disse a Joabe, comandante de seu exército: "Faça uma contagem de todas as tribos de Israel, desde Dã, ao norte, até Berseba, ao sul, para que eu saiba o número exato do povo".

3 Joabe, porém, respondeu ao rei: "Que o Senhor, seu Deus, dê ao rei vida longa para ver a população cem vezes mais numerosa do que é hoje! Mas por que meu senhor, o rei, deseja fazer essa contagem?".

4 Apesar da objeção de Joabe, o rei insistiu que fizessem o censo. Então Joabe e os comandantes do exército saíram para contar o povo de Israel. 5 Primeiro atravessaram o Jordão e acamparam em Aroer, ao sul da cidade, no meio do vale de Gade. Em seguida, foram a Jazer, 6 depois, a Gileade, na terra de Tatim-Hodsi*24.6 A Septuaginta traz a Gileade e a Cades, na terra dos hititas. e a Dã-Jaã, e deram a volta para Sidom. 7 Então chegaram à fortaleza de Tiro, e a todas as cidades dos heveus e dos cananeus. Por fim, dirigiram-se ao sul de Judá,*24.7 Ouao Neguebe de Judá. até Berseba.

8 Tendo percorrido toda a terra em nove meses e vinte dias, voltaram para Jerusalém. 9 Joabe informou ao rei o total da contagem. Havia em Israel oitocentos mil homens aptos para irem à guerra que sabiam manejar a espada e, em Judá, havia quinhentos mil.

10 Depois que Davi fez o censo, sua consciência começou a incomodá-lo. Ele disse ao Senhor: "Pequei grandemente ao fazer essa contagem. Perdoe meu pecado, ó Senhor, pois cometi uma insensatez".

11 Na manhã seguinte, a palavra do Senhor veio ao profeta Gade, vidente de Davi. Esta foi a mensagem: 12 "Vá e diga a Davi que assim diz o Senhor: ‘Darei a você três opções. Escolha um destes castigos, e eu o aplicarei a você’".

13 Gade foi a Davi e lhe perguntou: "Qual destas opções você escolhe: três*24.13 Conforme a Septuaginta (ver tb. 1Cr 21.12); o hebraico traz sete. anos de fome por toda a terra, três meses fugindo de seus inimigos, ou três dias de praga intensa por toda a terra? Pense bem e decida o que devo responder àquele que me enviou".

14 "Não tenho para onde correr nesta situação!", respondeu Davi a Gade. "Mas é melhor cair nas mãos do Senhor, pois sua misericórdia é grande. Que eu não caia nas mãos de homens."

15 Então, naquela manhã, o Senhor enviou sobre Israel uma praga que durou o tempo determinado. Morreram setenta mil pessoas em todo o Israel, desde Dã, ao norte, até Berseba, ao sul. 16 Mas, quando o anjo estava pronto para destruir Jerusalém, o Senhor teve compaixão e disse ao anjo da morte: "Pare! Já basta!". Naquele momento, o anjo do Senhor estava perto da eira de Araúna, o jebuseu.

17 Quando Davi viu o anjo, disse ao Senhor: "Fui eu que pequei e fiz o que era mau! O povo é inocente. O que fizeram? Que tua ira caia sobre mim e minha família".

18 Naquele dia, Gade foi a Davi e disse: "Vá e construa um altar para o Senhor na eira de Araúna, o jebuseu".

19 Então Davi subiu até lá para cumprir a ordem do Senhor. 20 Quando Araúna viu o rei e seus servos se aproximando, saiu e curvou-se diante do rei com o rosto no chão. 21 "Por que meu senhor, o rei, veio aqui?", perguntou Araúna.

Davi respondeu: "Vim comprar sua eira e construir nela um altar para o Senhor, a fim de que ele faça cessar a praga".

22 "Pode ficar com a eira, meu senhor, o rei", disse Araúna. "Use-a como lhe parecer melhor. Aqui estão os bois para o holocausto, e o senhor pode usar as tábuas de trilhar e as cangas dos bois como lenha para o fogo do altar. 23 Eu lhe darei tudo, ó rei. E que o Senhor, seu Deus, aceite seu sacrifício."

24 O rei, porém, respondeu a Araúna: "Não! Faço questão de pagar por tudo. Não apresentarei ao Senhor, meu Deus, holocaustos que nada me custaram". Então Davi pagou cinquenta peças*24.24 Em hebraico, 50 siclos, cerca de 600 gramas. de prata pela eira e pelos bois.

25 Davi construiu ali um altar ao Senhor e ofereceu holocaustos e ofertas de paz. O Senhor respondeu à sua oração em favor da terra, e a praga sobre Israel cessou.

5 And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer:*24.5 river: or, valley 6 Then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and about to Zidon,*24.6 land of Tahtim-hodshi: or, nether land newly inhabited 7 And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beer-sheba. 8 So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. 9 And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

10 And David’s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly. 11 For when David was up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying, 12 Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee. 13 So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days’ pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me. 14 And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.*24.14 are great: or, are many

15 So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men. 16 And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite.*24.16 Araunah: also called, Ornan 17 And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father’s house.

18 And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite.*24.18 Araunah: Heb. Araniah 19 And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as the LORD commanded. 20 And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground. 21 And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people. 22 And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood. 23 All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The LORD thy God accept thee. 24 And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. 25 And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
