1 Sarai, mulher de Abrão, não havia conseguido lhe dar filhos. Tinha, porém, uma serva egípcia chamada Hagar. 2 Sarai disse a Abrão: "O Senhor me impediu de ter filhos. Vá e deite-se com minha serva. Talvez, por meio dela, eu consiga ter uma família". Abrão aceitou a proposta de Sarai. 3 Então Sarai, mulher de Abrão, tomou Hagar, a serva egípcia, e a entregou a Abrão como mulher. (Isso aconteceu dez anos depois que Abrão havia se estabelecido na terra de Canaã.)

4 Abrão teve relações com Hagar, e ela engravidou. Quando Hagar soube que estava grávida, começou a tratar Sarai, sua senhora, com desprezo. 5 Então Sarai disse a Abrão: "Você é o culpado da vergonha que estou passando! Entreguei minha serva a você, mas, agora que engravidou, ela me trata com desprezo. O Senhor mostrará quem está errado: você ou eu!".

6 Abrão respondeu: "Hagar é sua serva. Faça com ela o que lhe parecer melhor". Então Sarai a tratou tão mal que, por fim, Hagar fugiu.

7 O anjo do Senhor encontrou Hagar no deserto, perto de uma fonte de água junto à estrada para Sur, 8 e perguntou: "Hagar, serva de Sarai, de onde você vem e para onde vai?".

"Estou fugindo de minha senhora, Sarai", respondeu ela.

9 Então o anjo do Senhor disse: "Volte para sua senhora e sujeite-se à autoridade dela". 10 E acrescentou: "Eu lhe darei tantos descendentes que será impossível contá-los".

11 O anjo do Senhor também disse: "Você está grávida e dará à luz um filho. Dê a ele o nome de Ismael,*16.11 Ismael significa "Deus ouve". pois o Senhor ouviu seu clamor angustiado. 12 Seu filho será um homem solitário e indomável, como um jumento selvagem. Levantará o punho contra todos, e todos serão contra ele. Sim, ele viverá em franca oposição a todos os seus parentes".*16.12 O significado do hebraico é incerto.

13 Então Hagar passou a usar outro nome para se referir ao Senhor, que havia falado com ela. Chamou-o de "Tu és o Deus que me vê",*16.13 Em hebraico, El-Roi. pois tinha dito: "Aqui eu vi aquele que me vê!". 14 Por isso, aquela fonte que fica entre Cades e Berede recebeu o nome de Beer-Laai-Roi.*16.14 Beer-Laai-Roi significa "fonte daquele que vive e me vê".

15 Assim, Hagar deu um filho a Abrão, e Abrão o chamou de Ismael. 16 Quando Ismael nasceu, Abrão tinha 86 anos.

4 And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. 5 And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee. 6 But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. 7 And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. 8 And he said, Hagar, Sarai’s maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai. 9 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

10 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. 11 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.*16.11 Ishmael: that is, God shall hear 12 And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. 13 And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me? 14 Wherefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.*16.14 Beer-lahai-roi: that is, The well of him that liveth and seeth me

15 And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son’s name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael. 16 And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.
