2 Ouçam isto, líderes do povo!

Ouçam todos que habitam na terra!

Em toda a sua história,

já ocorreu algo semelhante?

3 Contem a seus filhos o que aconteceu,

e que seus filhos contem aos filhos deles;

transmitam esta história de geração em geração.

4 Depois que os gafanhotos cortadores devoraram as colheitas,

os gafanhotos migradores comeram o que restava;

então vieram os gafanhotos saltadores

e, depois deles, os gafanhotos destruidores!*1.4 A identificação exata dos quatro tipos de gafanhotos é incerta.

5 Despertem e chorem, bêbados!

Lamentem, vocês que tomam vinho!

Todas as uvas estão arruinadas,

todo o seu vinho doce acabou.

6 Uma nação imensa invadiu minha terra,

um exército terrível, tão numeroso que não se pode contar.

Seus dentes são como os de leões,

suas presas, como as da leoa.

7 Destruiu minhas videiras

e arruinou minhas figueiras.

Arrancou sua casca e as destruiu;

seus galhos ficaram desfolhados.

8 Chorem como a moça vestida de luto,

que lamenta a morte do noivo.

9 Pois não há cereal nem vinho

para oferecer no templo do Senhor.

Por isso os sacerdotes estão de luto;

aqueles que servem na casa do Senhor choram.

10 Os campos estão arruinados,

a terra está desolada.

O trigo está destruído,

as uvas secaram

e o azeite acabou.

11 Desesperem-se, agricultores!

Lamentem, vocês que cuidam das videiras!

Chorem, pois o trigo e a cevada,

todas as colheitas nos campos, estão arruinados.

12 As videiras secaram,

e as figueiras murcharam.

As romãzeiras, as palmeiras e as macieiras,

todas as árvores frutíferas secaram,

e com elas murchou a alegria do povo.

13 Vistam-se de pano de saco e chorem, sacerdotes!

Lamentem, vocês que servem diante do altar!

Venham, passem a noite vestidos de pano de saco,

vocês que servem ao meu Deus.

Pois não há cereal nem vinho

para oferecer no templo de seu Deus.

14 Convoquem um tempo de jejum,

juntem o povo para uma reunião solene.

Tragam os líderes e todos que habitam na terra

para o templo do Senhor, seu Deus,

e ali clamem a ele.

15 O dia do Senhor está próximo,

o dia em que virá destruição da parte do Todo-poderoso;

que dia terrível será!

16 Nosso alimento desaparece diante dos olhos;

já não há alegria e exultação na casa de nosso Deus.

17 As sementes morrem na terra seca,

as colheitas de cereal se perdem.

Os celeiros estão vazios,

os armazéns, abandonados.

18 Como os animais gemem de fome!

As manadas de gado vagam confusas,

pois não encontram pasto;

os rebanhos de ovelhas sofrem.

19 Socorro, Senhor!

O fogo devorou os pastos do deserto,

e as chamas queimaram as árvores do campo.

20 Até os animais selvagens clamam a ti,

pois os riachos secaram,

8 Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth. 9 The meat offering and the drink offering is cut off from the house of the LORD; the priests, the LORD’s ministers, mourn. 10 The field is wasted, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth. 11 Be ye ashamed, O ye husbandmen; howl, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; because the harvest of the field is perished. 12 The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy is withered away from the sons of men. 13 Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God.

14 Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD your God, and cry unto the LORD,*1.14 solemn…: or, day of restraint 15 Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come. 16 Is not the meat cut off before our eyes, yea, joy and gladness from the house of our God? 17 The seed is rotten under their clods, the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the corn is withered.*1.17 seed: Heb. grains 18 How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep are made desolate. 19 O LORD, to thee will I cry: for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field.*1.19 pastures: or, habitations 20 The beasts of the field cry also unto thee: for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.
