1 Irmãos, não quero que vocês se esqueçam do que aconteceu muito tempo atrás, quando nossos antepassados foram guiados por uma nuvem que ia adiante deles e atravessaram o mar. 2 Na nuvem e no mar, todos foram batizados como seguidores de Moisés. 3 Todos comeram do mesmo alimento espiritual 4 e todos beberam da mesma água espiritual, pois beberam da rocha espiritual que os acompanhava, e essa rocha era Cristo. 5 No entanto, Deus não se agradou da maioria deles, e seus corpos ficaram espalhados pelo deserto.

6 Tais coisas aconteceram como advertência para nós, a fim de que não cobicemos o que é mau, como eles cobiçaram, 7 nem adoremos ídolos, como alguns deles adoraram. Segundo as Escrituras, "todos comeram e beberam e se entregaram à farra". 8 E não devemos praticar a imoralidade sexual, como alguns deles praticaram, e morreram 23 mil pessoas num só dia.

9 Também não devemos pôr Cristo à prova, como alguns deles puseram, e foram mortos por serpentes. 10 E não se queixem como alguns deles se queixaram, e foram destruídos pelo anjo da morte. 11 Essas coisas que aconteceram a eles nos servem como exemplo. Foram escritas como advertência para nós, que vivemos no fim dos tempos.

12 Portanto, se vocês pensam que estão de pé, cuidem para que não caiam. 13 As tentações em sua vida não são diferentes daquelas que outros enfrentaram. Deus é fiel, e ele não permitirá tentações maiores do que vocês podem suportar. Quando forem tentados, ele mostrará uma saída para que consigam resistir.

14 Portanto, meus amados, fujam do culto aos ídolos. 15 Vocês são pessoas sensatas. Julguem por si mesmos se o que digo é verdade. 16 Quando abençoamos o cálice à mesa, não participamos do sangue de Cristo? E, quando partimos o pão, não participamos do corpo de Cristo? 17 E, embora sejamos muitos, todos comemos do mesmo pão, mostrando que somos um só corpo. 18 Pensem no povo de Israel. Acaso os que comiam dos sacrifícios não partilhavam do mesmo altar?

19 Então, o que estou tentando dizer? Que a comida oferecida a ídolos tem alguma importância, ou que os ídolos são deuses de verdade? 20 De maneira nenhuma! Estou dizendo que esses sacrifícios são oferecidos a demônios, e não a Deus. E não quero que vocês tenham parte com demônios. 21 Vocês não podem beber do cálice do Senhor e também do cálice de demônios. Não podem participar da mesa do Senhor e também da mesa de demônios. 22 Acaso nos atreveremos a despertar o ciúme do Senhor? Somos mais fortes que ele?

23 "Tudo é permitido", mas nem tudo convém. "Tudo é permitido", mas nem tudo traz benefícios. 24 Não se preocupem com seu próprio bem, mas com o bem dos outros.

25 Portanto, vocês podem comer qualquer carne que é vendida no mercado sem questionar nada por motivo de consciência. 26 Pois "do Senhor é a terra e tudo que nela há".

27 Se um descrente os convidar para uma refeição, aceitem o convite se desejarem. Comam o que lhes oferecerem, sem questionar nada por motivo de consciência. 28 (Mas, se alguém lhes disser: "Esta carne foi oferecida a um ídolo", não a comam por respeito à consciência da pessoa que os avisou. 29 Talvez não seja uma questão de consciência para vocês, mas o é para a outra pessoa.) Afinal, por que minha liberdade deve ser limitada por aquilo que outros pensam? 30 Por que serei eu condenado se comer algo pelo qual dei graças a Deus?

31 Portanto, quer vocês comam, quer bebam, quer façam qualquer outra coisa, façam para a glória de Deus. 32 Não ofendam nem os judeus, nem os gentios, nem a igreja de Deus, 33 assim como também eu procuro agradar a todos em tudo que faço. Não faço apenas o que é melhor para mim; faço o que é melhor para os outros, a fim de que muitos sejam salvos.

1 Now I would not have you ignorant, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2 and were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3 and all ate the same spiritual food; 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. 5 However with most of them, God was not well pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. 7 Don’t be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play." 8 Let’s not commit sexual immorality, as some of them committed, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell. 9 Let’s not test Christ, as some of them tested, and perished by the serpents. 10 Don’t grumble, as some of them also grumbled, and perished by the destroyer. 11 Now all these things happened to them by way of example, and they were written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands be careful that he doesn’t fall.

13 No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 15 I speak as to wise men. Judge what I say. 16 The cup of blessing which we bless, isn’t it a sharing of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, isn’t it a sharing of the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one loaf of bread, we, who are many, are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf of bread. 18 Consider Israel according to the flesh. Don’t those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?

19 What am I saying then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20 But I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I don’t desire that you would have fellowship with demons. 21 You can’t both drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You can’t both partake of the table of the Lord and of the table of demons. 22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

23 "All things are lawful for me," but not all things are profitable. "All things are lawful for me," but not all things build up. 24 Let no one seek his own, but each one his neighbor’s good. 25 Whatever is sold in the butcher shop, eat, asking no question for the sake of conscience, 26 for "the earth is the Lord’s, and its fullness." 27 But if one of those who don’t believe invites you to a meal, and you are inclined to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no questions for the sake of conscience. 28 But if anyone says to you, "This was offered to idols," don’t eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience. For "the earth is the Lord’s, with all its fullness." 29 Conscience, I say, not your own, but the other’s conscience. For why is my liberty judged by another conscience? 30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced for something I give thanks for?

31 Whether therefore you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 32 Give no occasion for stumbling, whether to Jews, to Greeks, or to the assembly of God; 33 even as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved.
