1 Algum tempo depois, no terceiro ano da seca, o Senhor disse a Elias: "Vá apresentar-se ao rei Acabe. Diga-lhe que enviarei chuva". 2 Elias foi apresentar-se a Acabe.

A fome era severa em Samaria. 3 Acabe mandou chamar Obadias, o administrador do palácio. (Obadias temia profundamente o Senhor. 4 Certa vez, quando Jezabel havia tentado matar todos os profetas do Senhor, Obadias escondeu cem deles em duas cavernas. Colocou cinquenta em cada caverna e forneceu alimento e água para eles.) 5 Acabe disse a Obadias: "Precisamos ir a todas as fontes e vales na terra. Quem sabe encontraremos pasto suficiente para salvar pelo menos alguns de meus cavalos e mulas!". 6 Então dividiram o território entre si. Acabe foi para um lado, e Obadias, para o outro.

7 Enquanto Obadias caminhava, viu de repente Elias vindo em sua direção. Ao reconhecê-lo, Obadias curvou-se diante dele com o rosto no chão. "É o senhor mesmo, meu senhor Elias?", perguntou.

8 "Sim, sou eu", respondeu Elias. "Agora vá e diga ao rei: ‘Elias está aqui’."

9 Obadias, porém, protestou: "Que mal lhe fiz para que me envie para morrer nas mãos de Acabe? 10 Pois, tão certo como vive o Senhor, seu Deus, o rei o procurou em todas as nações e reinos da terra, de uma extremidade à outra. E cada vez que lhe diziam: ‘Elias não está aqui’, o rei Acabe fazia o rei daquela nação jurar que tinha falado a verdade. 11 E agora o senhor diz: ‘Vá e diga ao rei: Elias está aqui’. 12 Mas, assim que eu o deixar, o Espírito do Senhor o levará embora, sabe-se lá para onde, e quando Acabe chegar e não o encontrar, ele me matará. E, no entanto, tenho servido fielmente ao Senhor toda a minha vida. 13 Ninguém lhe falou da ocasião em que Jezabel tentou matar os profetas do Senhor? Escondi cem deles em duas cavernas e lhes forneci alimento e água. 14 E agora o senhor diz: ‘Vá e diga ao rei: Elias está aqui’. Se eu fizer isso, certamente Acabe me matará!".

15 Mas Elias disse: "Tão certo como vive o Senhor dos Exércitos, em cuja presença estou, hoje mesmo me apresentarei ao rei Acabe".

16 Então Obadias foi dizer a Acabe que Elias tinha vindo, e Acabe saiu para encontrar-se com Elias. 17 Quando Acabe o viu, disse: "É você mesmo, perturbador de Israel?".

18 "Não causei problema algum a Israel", respondeu Elias. "O senhor e sua família é que são os perturbadores, pois se recusaram a obedecer aos mandamentos do Senhor e, em vez disso, adoraram imagens de Baal. 19 Agora, convoque todo o Israel para encontrar-se comigo no monte Carmelo, além dos 450 profetas de Baal e os 400 profetas de Aserá que comem à mesa de Jezabel."

20 Acabe convocou todo o povo de Israel e os profetas para se reunirem no monte Carmelo. 21 Elias se colocou diante do povo e disse: "Até quando ficarão oscilando de um lado para o outro? Se o Senhor é Deus, sigam-no! Mas, se Baal é Deus, então sigam Baal!". O povo, contudo, ficou em silêncio.

22 Então Elias lhes disse: "Sou o único que resta dos profetas do Senhor, mas Baal tem 450 profetas. 23 Agora, tragam para cá dois novilhos. Que os profetas de Baal escolham um deles, cortem o animal em pedaços e o coloquem sobre a lenha do altar, mas não ponham fogo na lenha. Eu prepararei o outro novilho e o colocarei sobre a lenha no altar, mas não porei fogo na lenha. 24 Então invoquem o nome de seu deus, e eu invocarei o nome do Senhor. O deus que responder com fogo, esse é o Deus verdadeiro!". E todo o povo concordou.

25 Então Elias disse aos profetas de Baal: "Comecem vocês, pois são muitos. Escolham um dos novilhos, preparem-no e invoquem o nome de seu deus. Mas não ponham fogo na lenha".

26 Eles prepararam um dos novilhos e o colocaram sobre o altar. Invocaram o nome de Baal desde a manhã até o meio-dia e gritavam: "Ó Baal, responde-nos!", mas não houve resposta alguma. E dançavam em volta do altar que haviam feito.

27 Por volta do meio-dia, Elias começou a zombar deles: "Vocês precisam gritar mais alto", dizia ele. "Sem dúvida ele é um deus! Talvez esteja meditando ou ocupado em outro lugar. Ou talvez esteja viajando, ou dormindo, e precise ser acordado!"

28 Então gritaram mais alto e, como era seu costume, cortaram-se com facas e espadas, até sangrarem. 29 Agitaram-se em transe desde o meio-dia até a hora do sacrifício da tarde, mas não houve sequer um som, nem resposta ou reação alguma.

30 Então Elias disse ao povo: "Venham aqui!". Todos se reuniram em volta dele enquanto ele consertava o altar do Senhor que havia sido derrubado. 31 Pegou doze pedras, uma para cada tribo dos filhos de Jacó, a quem o Senhor disse: "Teu nome será Israel", 32 e com elas reconstruiu o altar em nome do Senhor. Depois, cavou ao redor do altar uma valeta com capacidade suficiente para doze litros de água. 33 Empilhou lenha sobre o altar, cortou o novilho em pedaços e colocou os pedaços sobre a lenha.

Em seguida, ordenou: "Encham quatro jarras grandes com água e derramem a água sobre o holocausto e a lenha".

34 Depois que fizeram isso, disse: "Façam a mesma coisa novamente". Quando terminaram, ele disse: "Agora façam o mesmo pela terceira vez". Eles seguiram sua instrução, 35 e a água corria ao redor do altar e encheu a valeta.

36 Na hora costumeira de oferecer o sacrifício da tarde, o profeta Elias se aproximou do altar e orou: "Ó Senhor, Deus de Abraão, Isaque e Jacó, prova hoje que és Deus em Israel e que sou teu servo. Prova que fiz tudo isso por ordem tua. 37 Ó Senhor, responde-me! Que este povo saiba que tu, ó Senhor, és o verdadeiro Deus e estás buscando o povo de volta para ti!".

38 No mesmo instante, fogo do Senhor desceu do céu e queimou o novilho, a madeira, as pedras e o chão, e secou até a água da valeta. 39 Quando o povo viu isso, todos se prostraram com o rosto no chão e gritaram: "O Senhor é Deus! Sim, o Senhor é Deus!".

40 Então Elias ordenou: "Prendam todos os profetas de Baal. Não deixem nenhum escapar!". O povo os prendeu, e Elias os levou para o riacho de Quisom e ali os matou.

41 Em seguida, Elias disse a Acabe: "Vá comer e beber, pois ouço uma forte tempestade chegando".

42 Acabe foi comer e beber. Elias, porém, subiu ao topo do monte Carmelo, prostrou-se até o chão com o rosto entre os joelhos e orou.

43 Depois, disse a seu servo: "Vá e olhe na direção do mar".

O servo foi e olhou, depois voltou e disse: "Não vi nada".

Sete vezes Elias mandou que ele fosse e olhasse. 44 Por fim, na sétima vez, o servo lhe disse: "Vi subir do mar uma pequena nuvem, do tamanho da mão de um homem".

Então Elias lhe disse: "Vá depressa dizer a Acabe: ‘Apronte seu carro e volte para casa. Se não se apressar, a chuva o impedirá!’".

45 Em pouco tempo, o céu ficou escuro com nuvens. Um vento forte trouxe uma grande tempestade, e Acabe partiu em sua carruagem a toda velocidade para Jezreel. 46 Então o Senhor concedeu força extraordinária a Elias. Ele prendeu a capa no cinto e correu à frente do carro de Acabe até a entrada de Jezreel.

1 After many days, Yahweh’s word came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, "Go, show yourself to Ahab; and I will send rain on the earth."

2 Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. The famine was severe in Samaria. 3 Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared Yahweh greatly; 4 for when Jezebel cut off Yahweh’s prophets, Obadiah took one hundred prophets, and hid them fifty to a cave, and fed them with bread and water.) 5 Ahab said to Obadiah, "Go through the land, to all the springs of water, and to all the brooks. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we not lose all the animals."

6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it. Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself. 7 As Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him. He recognized him, and fell on his face, and said, "Is it you, my lord Elijah?"

8 He answered him, "It is I. Go, tell your lord, ‘Behold, Elijah is here!’"

9 He said, "How have I sinned, that you would deliver your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me? 10 As Yahweh your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you. When they said, ‘He is not here,’ he took an oath of the kingdom and nation that they didn’t find you. 11 Now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, "Behold, Elijah is here."’ 12 It will happen, as soon as I leave you, that Yahweh’s Spirit will carry you I don’t know where; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he can’t find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared Yahweh from my youth. 13 Wasn’t it told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed Yahweh’s prophets, how I hid one hundred men of Yahweh’s prophets with fifty to a cave, and fed them with bread and water? 14 Now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, "Behold, Elijah is here".’ He will kill me."

15 Elijah said, "As Yahweh of Armies lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today." 16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

17 When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, "Is that you, you troubler of Israel?"

18 He answered, "I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house, in that you have forsaken Yahweh’s commandments and you have followed the Baals. 19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel to Mount Carmel, and four hundred fifty of the prophets of Baal, and four hundred of the prophets of the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table."

20 So Ahab sent to all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together to Mount Carmel. 21 Elijah came near to all the people, and said, "How long will you waver between the two sides? If Yahweh is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him."

The people didn’t say a word.

22 Then Elijah said to the people, "I, even I only, am left as a prophet of Yahweh; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred fifty men. 23 Let them therefore give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bull, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under it. 24 You call on the name of your god, and I will call on Yahweh’s name. The God who answers by fire, let him be God."

All the people answered, "What you say is good."

25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose one bull for yourselves, and dress it first, for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it."

26 They took the bull which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, "Baal, hear us!" But there was no voice, and nobody answered. They leaped about the altar which was made.

27 At noon, Elijah mocked them, and said, "Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is deep in thought, or he has gone somewhere, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he sleeps and must be awakened."

28 They cried aloud, and cut themselves in their way with knives and lances until the blood gushed out on them. 29 When midday was past, they prophesied until the time of the evening offering; but there was no voice, no answer, and nobody paid attention.

30 Elijah said to all the people, "Come near to me!"; and all the people came near to him. He repaired Yahweh’s altar that had been thrown down. 31 Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom Yahweh’s word came, saying, "Israel shall be your name." 32 With the stones he built an altar in Yahweh’s name. He made a trench around the altar large enough to contain two seahs of seed. 33 He put the wood in order, and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. He said, "Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood." 34 He said, "Do it a second time;" and they did it the second time. He said, "Do it a third time;" and they did it the third time. 35 The water ran around the altar; and he also filled the trench with water.

36 At the time of the evening offering, Elijah the prophet came near and said, "Yahweh, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word. 37 Hear me, Yahweh, hear me, that this people may know that you, Yahweh, are God, and that you have turned their heart back again."

38 Then Yahweh’s fire fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust; and it licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces. They said, "Yahweh, he is God! Yahweh, he is God!"

40 Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal! Don’t let one of them escape!"

They seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and killed them there.

41 Elijah said to Ahab, "Get up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain."

42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down on the earth, and put his face between his knees. 43 He said to his servant, "Go up now and look toward the sea."

He went up and looked, then said, "There is nothing."

He said, "Go again" seven times.

44 On the seventh time, he said, "Behold, a small cloud, like a man’s hand, is rising out of the sea."

He said, "Go up, tell Ahab, ‘Get ready and go down, so that the rain doesn’t stop you.’"

45 In a little while, the sky grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel. 46 Yahweh’s hand was on Elijah; and he tucked his cloak into his belt and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
