1 Ó gálatas insensatos! Quem os enfeitiçou? Jesus Cristo não lhes foi explicado tão claramente como se tivessem visto com os próprios olhos a morte dele na cruz? 2 Deixem-me perguntar apenas uma coisa: vocês receberam o Espírito porque obedeceram à lei ou porque creram na mensagem que ouviram? 3 Será que perderam o juízo? Tendo começado no Espírito, por que agora procuram tornar-se perfeitos por seus próprios esforços? 4 Será que foi à toa que passaram por tantos sofrimentos? É claro que não foi à toa!

5 Volto a perguntar: acaso aquele que lhes deu o Espírito e realizou milagres entre vocês agiu assim porque vocês obedeceram à lei ou porque creram na mensagem que ouviram?

6 Da mesma forma, "Abraão creu em Deus, e assim foi considerado justo". 7 Logo, os verdadeiros filhos de Abraão são aqueles que creem.

8 As Escrituras previram esse tempo em que Deus declararia os gentios justos por meio da fé. Ele anunciou essas boas-novas a Abraão há muito tempo, quando disse: "Todas as nações da terra serão abençoadas por seu intermédio". 9 Portanto, todos os que creem participam da mesma bênção que Abraão recebeu por crer.

10 Contudo, os que confiam na lei para serem declarados justos estão sob maldição, pois as Escrituras dizem: "Maldito quem não se mantiver obediente a tudo que está escrito no Livro da Lei". 11 É evidente, portanto, que ninguém pode ser declarado justo diante de Deus pela lei. Pois as Escrituras dizem: "O justo viverá pela fé". 12 A lei, porém, não é baseada na fé, pois diz: "Quem obedece à lei viverá por ela".

13 Mas Cristo nos resgatou da maldição pronunciada pela lei tomando sobre si a maldição por nossas ofensas. Pois as Escrituras dizem: "Maldito todo aquele que é pendurado num madeiro". 14 Por meio de Cristo Jesus, os gentios foram abençoados com a mesma bênção de Abraão, para que recebêssemos, pela fé, o Espírito prometido.

15 Irmãos, apresento-lhes um exemplo da vida diária. Ninguém pode anular ou fazer acréscimos a uma aliança irrevogável. 16 Pois bem, Deus fez a promessa a Abraão e a seu descendente. Observem que as Escrituras não dizem "a seus descendentes", como se fosse uma referência a muitos, mas sim "a seu descendente", isto é, Cristo. 17 É isto que quero dizer: a lei, que veio 430 anos depois, não pode anular a aliança que Deus estabeleceu com Abraão, pois nesse caso a promessa seria quebrada. 18 Portanto, se a herança pudesse ser recebida pela obediência à lei, ela não viria pela aceitação da promessa. No entanto, Deus, em sua bondade, a concedeu a Abraão como promessa.

19 Qual era, então, o propósito da lei? Ela foi acrescentada à promessa para mostrar às pessoas seus pecados. Mas a lei deveria durar apenas até a vinda do descendente prometido. Por meio de anjos, a lei foi entregue a um mediador. 20 O mediador, porém, só é necessário quando dois ou mais precisam chegar a um acordo, e Deus é um só.

21 Existe, portanto, algum conflito entre a lei e as promessas de Deus? De maneira nenhuma! Se a lei fosse capaz de nos conceder nova vida, seríamos declarados justos pela obediência a ela. 22 Mas as Escrituras afirmam que somos todos prisioneiros do pecado, de modo que nós, os que cremos, recebemos a promessa de libertação apenas pela fé em Jesus Cristo.

23 Antes que o caminho da fé se tornasse disponível, fomos colocados sob a custódia da lei e mantidos sob a sua guarda, até que essa fé fosse revelada.

24 Em outras palavras, a lei foi nosso guardião até a vinda de Cristo; ela nos protegeu até que, por meio da fé, pudéssemos ser declarados justos. 25 Agora que veio o caminho da fé, não precisamos mais da lei como guardião.

26 Pois todos vocês são filhos de Deus por meio da fé em Cristo Jesus. 27 Todos que foram unidos com Cristo no batismo se revestiram de Cristo. 28 Não há mais judeu nem gentio, escravo nem livre, homem nem mulher, pois todos vocês são um em Cristo Jesus. 29 E agora que pertencem a Cristo, são verdadeiros filhos de Abraão, herdeiros dele segundo a promessa de Deus.

1 Foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you not to obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was openly portrayed among you as crucified? 2 I just want to learn this from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by hearing of faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now completed in the flesh? 4 Did you suffer so many things in vain, if it is indeed in vain? 5 He therefore who supplies the Spirit to you and does miracles among you, does he do it by the works of the law, or by hearing of faith? 6 Even so, Abraham "believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness." 7 Know therefore that those who are of faith are children of Abraham. 8 The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the Good News beforehand to Abraham, saying, "In you all the nations will be blessed." 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed with the faithful Abraham.

10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse. For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who doesn’t continue in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them." 11 Now that no man is justified by the law before God is evident, for, "The righteous will live by faith." 12 The law is not of faith, but, "The man who does them will live by them."

13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree," 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

15 Brothers, speaking of human terms, though it is only a man’s covenant, yet when it has been confirmed, no one makes it void or adds to it. 16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his offspring. He doesn’t say, "To descendants", as of many, but as of one, "To your offspring", which is Christ. 17 Now I say this: A covenant confirmed beforehand by God in Christ, the law, which came four hundred thirty years after, does not annul, so as to make the promise of no effect. 18 For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no more of promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by promise.

19 Then why is there the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise has been made. It was ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator. 20 Now a mediator is not between one, but God is one.

21 Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could make alive, most certainly righteousness would have been of the law. 22 But the Scripture imprisoned all things under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, confined for the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24 So that the law has become our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. 26 For you are all children of God, through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring and heirs according to promise.
