1 O Senhor disse a Josué: 2 "Diga aos israelitas que designem as cidades de refúgio, de acordo com as instruções que dei a Moisés. 3 Qualquer um que matar alguém acidentalmente e sem intenção poderá fugir para uma dessas cidades; serão lugares de proteção contra os parentes da vítima que quiserem vingar sua morte.

4 "Ao chegar a uma dessas cidades, a pessoa que tirou a vida de alguém comparecerá diante das autoridades à porta da cidade e apresentará seu caso. Eles permitirão que essa pessoa entre na cidade e lhe darão um lugar para habitar no meio deles. 5 Se os parentes da vítima forem até lá para vingar sua morte, as autoridades não entregarão o acusado, pois ele matou alguém sem intenção e sem hostilidade anterior. 6 O acusado, porém, deve permanecer na cidade e ser julgado pela comunidade, que dará o veredicto. Continuará a viver na cidade até a morte daquele que era o sumo sacerdote na época do acidente. Depois disso, terá liberdade de voltar para sua casa na cidade de onde fugiu".

7 Estas foram as cidades designadas como cidades de refúgio: Quedes, na Galileia, na região montanhosa de Naftali; Siquém, na região montanhosa de Efraim; e Quiriate-Arba (isto é, Hebrom), na região montanhosa de Judá. 8 Estas foram as cidades designadas no lado leste do rio Jordão, em frente de Jericó: Bezer, no planalto desértico da tribo de Rúben; Ramote, em Gileade, no território da tribo de Gade; e Golã, em Basã, no território da tribo de Manassés. 9 Essas cidades foram separadas para todos os israelitas, e também para os estrangeiros que viviam entre eles. Qualquer um que matasse alguém acidentalmente poderia se refugiar numa dessas cidades. Assim, não seria morto por vingança antes de comparecer a julgamento perante a comunidade.

1 Yahweh spoke to Joshua, saying, 2 "Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘Assign the cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you by Moses, 3 that the man slayer who kills any person accidentally or unintentionally may flee there. They shall be to you for a refuge from the avenger of blood. 4 He shall flee to one of those cities, and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and declare his case in the ears of the elders of that city. They shall take him into the city with them, and give him a place, that he may live among them. 5 If the avenger of blood pursues him, then they shall not deliver up the man slayer into his hand; because he struck his neighbor unintentionally, and didn’t hate him before. 6 He shall dwell in that city until he stands before the congregation for judgment, until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days. Then the man slayer shall return, and come to his own city, and to his own house, to the city he fled from.’"

7 They set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba (also called Hebron) in the hill country of Judah. 8 Beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness in the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh. 9 These were the appointed cities for all the children of Israel, and for the alien who lives among them, that whoever kills any person unintentionally might flee there, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stands trial before the congregation.
