1 O Senhor disse a Josué: "Não tenha medo nem desanime! Pegue todos os seus homens de guerra e avance contra Ai, pois eu lhe entreguei o rei de Ai, seu povo e sua terra. 2 Você os destruirá como destruiu Jericó e seu rei. Desta vez, porém, poderão ficar com os despojos e os animais. Prepare uma emboscada atrás da cidade".

3 Então Josué e todos os seus homens de guerra partiram para atacar Ai. Josué escolheu trinta mil de seus melhores guerreiros e, de noite, os enviou 4 com as seguintes ordens: "Armem uma emboscada atrás da cidade, perto dela, e preparem-se para entrar em ação. 5 Quando nosso exército principal atacar, os homens de Ai sairão para a luta, como fizeram antes, e nós fugiremos deles. 6 Eles nos perseguirão até que os tenhamos atraído para longe da cidade, pois dirão: ‘Os israelitas estão fugindo de nós como fizeram antes’. Então, enquanto corremos deles, 7 vocês sairão da emboscada e tomarão a cidade, pois o Senhor, seu Deus, a entregará em suas mãos. 8 Ponham fogo na cidade, conforme o Senhor ordenou. Essas são as minhas ordens".

9 Josué os enviou, e eles foram ao lugar da emboscada, entre Betel e o lado oeste de Ai. Josué, porém, passou a noite com o povo no acampamento. 10 No dia seguinte, logo cedo, Josué passou em revista a tropa e partiu para Ai acompanhado dos líderes de Israel. 11 Todos os homens de guerra que estavam com Josué se aproximaram da cidade e acamparam do lado norte de Ai, onde um vale os separava da cidade. 12 Naquela noite, Josué enviou cerca de cinco mil homens para esperarem escondidos entre Betel e Ai, do lado oeste da cidade. 13 O exército principal se posicionou ao norte da cidade, e o grupo da emboscada, a oeste. Josué, por sua vez, passou a noite no meio do vale.

14 Quando o rei de Ai viu os israelitas do outro lado do vale, ele e seu exército se apressaram e saíram bem cedo para os atacarem no local de onde se avista o vale do Jordão. Não sabiam, porém, que havia uma emboscada atrás da cidade. 15 Josué e o exército de Israel fugiram em direção ao deserto, como se estivessem derrotados. 16 Todos os homens da cidade foram chamados para persegui-los e, com isso, acabaram atraídos para longe da cidade. 17 Não restou um só homem em Ai e em Betel que não perseguisse Israel, e as cidades ficaram totalmente desprotegidas.

18 Então o Senhor disse a Josué: "Aponte para Ai a lança que você tem na mão, pois eu lhe entregarei a cidade". Josué fez conforme ordenado 19 e, assim que deu esse sinal, todos os homens da emboscada saíram correndo de sua posição e invadiram a cidade. Em pouco tempo, eles a capturaram e a incendiaram.

20 Quando os homens de Ai olharam para trás, a fumaça da cidade subia ao céu e eles não tinham para onde ir, pois os israelitas que fugiam em direção ao deserto se voltaram contra seus perseguidores. 21 Ao perceberem que a emboscada havia sido bem-sucedida e fumaça subia da cidade, Josué e todo o exército de Israel deram meia-volta e atacaram os homens de Ai. 22 Enquanto isso, os israelitas que estavam dentro da cidade saíram e atacaram o inimigo pela retaguarda. Os homens de Ai ficaram presos no meio, com guerreiros israelitas de ambos os lados. Israel os atacou, e nenhum deles sobreviveu nem escapou. 23 Somente o rei de Ai foi capturado vivo e levado a Josué.

24 Quando o exército israelita terminou de perseguir e matar todos os homens de Ai nos campos abertos, voltou e acabou com quem tinha ficado dentro da cidade. 25 Toda a população de Ai, no total de doze mil homens e mulheres, foi exterminada naquele dia, 26 pois Josué manteve sua lança estendida até que todos os moradores de Ai tivessem sido completamente destruídos. 27 Somente os animais e os tesouros da cidade não foram destruídos, pois Israel os tomou como despojo, conforme o Senhor havia ordenado a Josué. 28 Então Josué pôs fogo na cidade de Ai, e ela se tornou, para sempre, uma pilha de ruínas, um lugar desolado até hoje.

29 Josué enforcou o rei de Ai numa árvore e ali o deixou até a tarde. Ao pôr do sol, os israelitas retiraram o corpo da árvore e, por ordem de Josué, o lançaram em frente à porta da cidade. Sobre ele levantaram uma pilha de pedras, que permanece lá até hoje.

30 Então Josué construiu no monte Ebal um altar ao Senhor, o Deus de Israel. 31 Seguiu as ordens que Moisés, servo do Senhor, havia escrito no Livro da Lei: "Façam um altar de pedras inteiras, em sua forma natural, que não tenham sido trabalhadas com ferramentas de ferro". Sobre o altar, apresentaram ao Senhor holocaustos e ofertas de paz. 32 E, enquanto os israelitas observavam, Josué copiou nas pedras a lei que Moisés lhes tinha escrito.

33 Todo o Israel, tanto os estrangeiros como os israelitas de nascimento, junto com os líderes, oficiais e juízes, se dividiu em dois grupos. Um grupo ficou em frente ao monte Gerizim, e o outro, em frente ao monte Ebal. Entre os dois grupos, que estavam voltados um para o outro, ficaram os sacerdotes levitas que levavam a arca da aliança do Senhor. Tudo foi feito de acordo com as ordens transmitidas de antemão por Moisés, servo do Senhor, para que o povo de Israel fosse abençoado.

34 Em seguida, Josué leu todas as bênçãos e maldições que Moisés havia escrito no Livro da Lei. 35 Cada palavra de cada ordem de Moisés foi lida para toda a comunidade de Israel, incluindo as mulheres, as crianças e os estrangeiros que viviam entre eles.

1 Yahweh said to Joshua, "Don’t be afraid, and don’t be dismayed. Take all the warriors with you, and arise, go up to Ai. Behold, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, with his people, his city, and his land. 2 You shall do to Ai and her king as you did to Jericho and her king, except you shall take its goods and its livestock for yourselves. Set an ambush for the city behind it."

3 So Joshua arose, with all the warriors, to go up to Ai. Joshua chose thirty thousand men, the mighty men of valor, and sent them out by night. 4 He commanded them, saying, "Behold, you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city. Don’t go very far from the city, but all of you be ready. 5 I and all the people who are with me will approach the city. It shall happen, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them. 6 They will come out after us until we have drawn them away from the city; for they will say, ‘They flee before us, like the first time.’ So we will flee before them, 7 and you shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city; for Yahweh your God will deliver it into your hand. 8 It shall be, when you have seized the city, that you shall set the city on fire. You shall do this according to Yahweh’s word. Behold, I have commanded you."

9 Joshua sent them out; and they went to set up the ambush, and stayed between Bethel and Ai on the west side of Ai; but Joshua stayed among the people that night. 10 Joshua rose up early in the morning, mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai. 11 All the people, even the men of war who were with him, went up and came near, and came before the city and encamped on the north side of Ai. Now there was a valley between him and Ai. 12 He took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city. 13 So they set the people, even all the army who was on the north of the city, and their ambush on the west of the city; and Joshua went that night into the middle of the valley. 14 When the king of Ai saw it, they hurried and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he didn’t know that there was an ambush against him behind the city. 15 Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness. 16 All the people who were in the city were called together to pursue after them. They pursued Joshua, and were drawn away from the city. 17 There was not a man left in Ai or Bethel who didn’t go out after Israel. They left the city open, and pursued Israel.

18 Yahweh said to Joshua, "Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand."

Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city. 19 The ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand and entered into the city and took it. They hurried and set the city on fire. 20 When the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way. The people who fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers. 21 When Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned back and killed the men of Ai. 22 The others came out of the city against them, so they were in the middle of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side. They struck them, so that they let none of them remain or escape. 23 They captured the king of Ai alive, and brought him to Joshua.

24 When Israel had finished killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness in which they pursued them, and they had all fallen by the edge of the sword until they were consumed, all Israel returned to Ai and struck it with the edge of the sword. 25 All that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the people of Ai. 26 For Joshua didn’t draw back his hand, with which he stretched out the javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai. 27 Israel took for themselves only the livestock and the goods of that city, according to Yahweh’s word which he commanded Joshua. 28 So Joshua burned Ai and made it a heap forever, even a desolation, to this day. 29 He hanged the king of Ai on a tree until the evening. At sundown, Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree and threw it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised a great heap of stones on it that remains to this day.

30 Then Joshua built an altar to Yahweh, the God of Israel, on Mount Ebal, 31 as Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses: an altar of uncut stones, on which no one had lifted up any iron. They offered burnt offerings on it to Yahweh and sacrificed peace offerings. 32 He wrote there on the stones a copy of Moses’ law, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel. 33 All Israel, with their elders, officers, and judges, stood on both sides of the ark before the Levitical priests, who carried the ark of Yahweh’s covenant, the foreigner as well as the native; half of them in front of Mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of Yahweh had commanded at the first, that they should bless the people of Israel. 34 Afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the law. 35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded which Joshua didn’t read before all the assembly of Israel, with the women, the little ones, and the foreigners who were among them.
