1 Faltavam dois dias para a Páscoa e para a Festa dos Pães sem Fermento. Os principais sacerdotes e mestres da lei ainda procuravam uma oportunidade de prender Jesus em segredo e matá-lo. 2 "Mas não durante a festa da Páscoa, para não haver tumulto entre o povo", concordaram entre eles.

3 Enquanto isso, Jesus estava em Betânia, na casa de Simão, o leproso. Quando ele estava à mesa, uma mulher entrou com um frasco de alabastro contendo um perfume caro, feito de essência de nardo. Ela quebrou o frasco e derramou o perfume sobre a cabeça dele.

4 Alguns dos que estavam à mesa ficaram indignados. "Por que desperdiçar um perfume tão caro?", perguntaram. 5 "Poderia ter sido vendido por trezentas moedas de prata, e o dinheiro, dado aos pobres!" E repreenderam a mulher severamente.

6 Jesus, porém, disse: "Deixem-na em paz. Por que a criticam por ter feito algo tão bom para mim? 7 Vocês sempre terão os pobres em seu meio e poderão ajudá-los sempre que desejarem, mas nem sempre terão a mim. 8 Ela fez o que podia e ungiu meu corpo de antemão para o sepultamento. 9 "Eu lhes digo a verdade: onde quer que as boas-novas sejam anunciadas pelo mundo, o que esta mulher fez será contado, e dela se lembrarão".

10 Então Judas Iscariotes, um dos Doze, foi aos principais sacerdotes para combinar de lhes entregar Jesus. 11 Quando souberam por que ele tinha vindo, ficaram muito satisfeitos e lhe prometeram dinheiro. Então ele começou a procurar uma oportunidade para trair Jesus.

12 No primeiro dia da Festa dos Pães sem Fermento, quando o cordeiro pascal era sacrificado, os discípulos de Jesus lhe perguntaram: "Onde quer que lhe preparemos a refeição da Páscoa?".

13 Então Jesus enviou dois deles a Jerusalém, com as seguintes instruções: "Ao entrarem na cidade, um homem carregando uma vasilha de água virá ao seu encontro. Sigam-no. 14 Digam ao dono da casa em que ele entrar: ‘O Mestre pergunta: Onde fica o aposento no qual comerei a refeição da Páscoa com meus discípulos?’. 15 Ele os levará a uma sala grande no andar superior, que já estará arrumada. Preparem ali a refeição". 16 Então os dois discípulos foram à cidade e encontraram tudo como Jesus tinha dito, e ali prepararam a refeição da Páscoa.

17 Ao anoitecer, Jesus chegou com os Doze. 18 Quando estavam à mesa, comendo, Jesus disse: ‘Eu lhes digo a verdade: um de vocês que está aqui comendo comigo vai me trair".

19 Aflitos, eles protestaram: "Certamente não serei eu!".

20 Jesus respondeu: "É um dos Doze. É alguém que come comigo da mesma tigela. 21 Pois o Filho do Homem deve morrer, como as Escrituras declararam há muito tempo. Mas que terrível será para aquele que o trair! Para esse homem seria melhor não ter nascido".

22 Enquanto comiam, Jesus tomou o pão e o abençoou. Em seguida, partiu-o em pedaços e deu aos discípulos, dizendo: "Tomem, porque este é o meu corpo".

23 Então tomou o cálice de vinho e agradeceu a Deus. Depois, entregou-o aos discípulos, e todos beberam. 24 Então Jesus disse: "Este é o meu sangue, que confirma a aliança. Ele é derramado como sacrifício por muitos. 25 Eu lhes digo a verdade: não voltarei a beber vinho até aquele dia em que beberei um vinho novo no reino de Deus".

26 Então cantaram um hino e saíram para o monte das Oliveiras.

27 No caminho, Jesus disse: "Todos vocês me abandonarão, pois as Escrituras dizem:

‘Deus ferirá o pastor,

e as ovelhas serão dispersas’.

28 Mas, depois de ressuscitar, irei adiante de vocês à Galileia".

29 Pedro declarou: "Mesmo que todos os outros o abandonem, eu jamais farei isso".

30 Jesus respondeu: "Eu lhe digo a verdade: esta mesma noite, antes que o galo cante duas vezes, você me negará três vezes".

31 Pedro, no entanto, insistiu enfaticamente: "Mesmo que eu tenha de morrer ao seu lado, jamais o negarei!". E todos os outros discípulos disseram o mesmo.

32 Então foram a um lugar chamado Getsêmani, e Jesus disse a seus discípulos: "Sentem-se aqui enquanto vou orar". 33 Levou consigo Pedro, Tiago e João e começou a sentir grande pavor e angústia. 34 "Minha alma está profundamente triste, a ponto de morrer", disse ele. "Fiquem aqui e vigiem."

35 Ele avançou um pouco e curvou-se até o chão. Então orou para que, se possível, a hora que o esperava fosse afastada dele. 36 E clamou: "Aba, Pai, tudo é possível para ti. Peço que afastes de mim este cálice. Contudo, que seja feita a tua vontade, e não a minha".

37 Depois, voltou aos discípulos e os encontrou dormindo. "Simão, você está dormindo?", disse ele a Pedro. "Não pode vigiar comigo nem por uma hora? 38 Vigiem e orem para que não cedam à tentação, pois o espírito está disposto, mas a carne é fraca."

39 Então os deixou novamente e fez a mesma oração de antes. 40 Quando voltou pela segunda vez, mais uma vez encontrou os discípulos dormindo, pois não conseguiam manter os olhos abertos. Eles não sabiam o que dizer.

41 Ao voltar pela terceira vez, disse: "Vocês ainda dormem e descansam? Basta; chegou a hora. O Filho do Homem está para ser entregue nas mãos de pecadores. 42 Levantem-se e vamos. Meu traidor chegou".

43 No mesmo instante, enquanto Jesus ainda falava, Judas, um dos Doze, chegou com uma multidão armada de espadas e pedaços de pau. Tinham sido enviados pelos principais sacerdotes, mestres da lei e líderes do povo. 44 O traidor havia combinado com eles um sinal: "Vocês saberão a quem devem prender quando eu o cumprimentar com um beijo. Então poderão levá-lo em segurança". 45 Assim que chegaram, Judas se aproximou de Jesus. "Rabi!", exclamou ele, e o beijou.

46 Os outros agarraram Jesus e o prenderam. 47 Mas um dos que estavam com Jesus puxou a espada e feriu o servo do sumo sacerdote, cortando-lhe a orelha.

48 Jesus perguntou: "Por acaso sou um revolucionário perigoso, para que venham me prender com espadas e pedaços de pau? 49 Por que não me prenderam no templo? Todos os dias estive ali, no meio de vocês, ensinando. Mas estas coisas estão acontecendo para que se cumpra o que dizem as Escrituras".

50 Então todos o abandonaram e fugiram. 51 Um jovem que os seguia vestia apenas um lençol de linho. Quando a multidão tentou agarrá-lo, 52 ele deixou para trás o lençol e escapou nu.

53 Levaram Jesus para a casa do sumo sacerdote, onde estavam reunidos os principais sacerdotes, os líderes do povo e os mestres da lei. 54 Pedro seguia Jesus de longe e entrou no pátio do sumo sacerdote. Ali, sentou-se com os guardas para se aquecer junto ao fogo.

55 Lá dentro, os principais sacerdotes e todo o conselho dos líderes do povo tentavam, sem sucesso, encontrar provas contra Jesus, para que pudessem condená-lo à morte. 56 Muitas testemunhas falsas deram depoimentos, mas elas se contradiziam. 57 Por fim, alguns homens se levantaram e apresentaram o seguinte testemunho falso: 58 "Nós o ouvimos dizer: ‘Destruirei este templo feito por mãos humanas e em três dias construirei outro, não feito por mãos humanas’". 59 Mas nem assim seus depoimentos eram coerentes.

60 Então o sumo sacerdote se levantou diante dos demais e perguntou a Jesus: "Você não vai responder a essas acusações? O que tem a dizer em sua defesa?". 61 Jesus, no entanto, permaneceu calado e não deu resposta alguma. Então o sumo sacerdote perguntou: "Você é o Cristo, o Filho do Deus Bendito?".

62 "Eu sou", disse Jesus. "E vocês verão o Filho do Homem sentado à direita do Deus Poderoso e vindo sobre as nuvens do céu."

63 Então o sumo sacerdote rasgou as vestes e disse: "Que necessidade temos de outras testemunhas? 64 Todos ouviram a blasfêmia. Qual é o veredicto?".

E todos o julgaram culpado e o condenaram à morte.

65 Então alguns deles começaram a cuspir em Jesus. Vendaram seus olhos e lhe deram socos. "Profetize para nós!", zombavam. E os guardas lhe davam tapas enquanto o levavam.

66 Enquanto isso, Pedro estava lá embaixo, no pátio. Uma das criadas que trabalhava para o sumo sacerdote passou por ali 67 e viu Pedro se aquecendo junto ao fogo. Olhou bem para ele e disse: "Você é um dos que estavam com Jesus de Nazaré".

68 Ele, porém, negou. "Não faço a menor ideia do que você está falando!", disse, e caminhou em direção à saída. Naquele instante, o galo cantou.

69 Quando a criada o viu ali, começou a dizer aos outros: "Este homem com certeza é um deles!". 70 Mas Pedro negou novamente.

Um pouco mais tarde, alguns dos que estavam por lá confrontaram Pedro, dizendo: "Você deve ser um deles, pois é galileu".

71 Ele, porém, começou a praguejar e jurou: "Não conheço esse homem de quem vocês estão falando!". 72 E, no mesmo instante, o galo cantou pela segunda vez.

Então Pedro se lembrou das palavras de Jesus: "Antes que o galo cante duas vezes, você me negará três vezes". E começou a chorar.

1 It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might seize him by deception and kill him. 2 For they said, "Not during the feast, because there might be a riot among the people."

3 While he was at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster jar of ointment of pure nard—very costly. She broke the jar and poured it over his head. 4 But there were some who were indignant among themselves, saying, "Why has this ointment been wasted? 5 For this might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor." So they grumbled against her.

6 But Jesus said, "Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for me. 7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want to, you can do them good; but you will not always have me. 8 She has done what she could. She has anointed my body beforehand for the burying. 9 Most certainly I tell you, wherever this Good News may be preached throughout the whole world, that which this woman has done will also be spoken of for a memorial of her."

10 Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went away to the chief priests, that he might deliver him to them. 11 They, when they heard it, were glad, and promised to give him money. He sought how he might conveniently deliver him.

12 On the first day of unleavened bread, when they sacrificed the Passover, his disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go and prepare that you may eat the Passover?"

13 He sent two of his disciples and said to them, "Go into the city, and there a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him, 14 and wherever he enters in, tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, "Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"’ 15 He will himself show you a large upper room furnished and ready. Get ready for us there."

16 His disciples went out, and came into the city, and found things as he had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.

17 When it was evening he came with the twelve. 18 As they sat and were eating, Jesus said, "Most certainly I tell you, one of you will betray me—he who eats with me."

19 They began to be sorrowful, and to ask him one by one, "Surely not I?" And another said, "Surely not I?"

20 He answered them, "It is one of the twelve, he who dips with me in the dish. 21 For the Son of Man goes as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had not been born."

22 As they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had blessed it, he broke it and gave to them, and said, "Take, eat. This is my body."

23 He took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave to them. They all drank of it. 24 He said to them, "This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Most certainly I tell you, I will no more drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in God’s Kingdom." 26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

27 Jesus said to them, "All of you will be made to stumble because of me tonight, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28 However, after I am raised up, I will go before you into Galilee."

29 But Peter said to him, "Although all will be offended, yet I will not."

30 Jesus said to him, "Most certainly I tell you that you today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times."

31 But he spoke all the more, "If I must die with you, I will not deny you." They all said the same thing.

32 They came to a place which was named Gethsemane. He said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." 33 He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be greatly troubled and distressed. 34 He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch."

35 He went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass away from him. 36 He said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Please remove this cup from me. However, not what I desire, but what you desire."

37 He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you watch one hour? 38 Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

39 Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. 40 Again he returned and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they didn’t know what to answer him. 41 He came the third time and said to them, "Sleep on now, and take your rest. It is enough. The hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Arise! Let’s get going. Behold, he who betrays me is at hand."

43 Immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came—and with him a multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. 44 Now he who betrayed him had given them a sign, saying, "Whomever I will kiss, that is he. Seize him, and lead him away safely." 45 When he had come, immediately he came to him and said, "Rabbi! Rabbi!" and kissed him. 46 They laid their hands on him and seized him. 47 But a certain one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

48 Jesus answered them, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to seize me? 49 I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you didn’t arrest me. But this is so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled."

50 They all left him, and fled. 51 A certain young man followed him, having a linen cloth thrown around himself over his naked body. The young men grabbed him, 52 but he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked. 53 They led Jesus away to the high priest. All the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes came together with him.

54 Peter had followed him from a distance, until he came into the court of the high priest. He was sitting with the officers, and warming himself in the light of the fire. 55 Now the chief priests and the whole council sought witnesses against Jesus to put him to death, and found none. 56 For many gave false testimony against him, and their testimony didn’t agree with each other. 57 Some stood up and gave false testimony against him, saying, 58 "We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.’" 59 Even so, their testimony didn’t agree.

60 The high priest stood up in the middle, and asked Jesus, "Have you no answer? What is it which these testify against you?" 61 But he stayed quiet, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?"

62 Jesus said, "I am. You will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of the sky."

63 The high priest tore his clothes and said, "What further need have we of witnesses? 64 You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think?" They all condemned him to be worthy of death. 65 Some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to beat him with fists, and to tell him, "Prophesy!" The officers struck him with the palms of their hands.

66 As Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the maids of the high priest came, 67 and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, "You were also with the Nazarene, Jesus!"

68 But he denied it, saying, "I neither know nor understand what you are saying." He went out on the porch, and the rooster crowed.

69 The maid saw him and began again to tell those who stood by, "This is one of them." 70 But he again denied it. After a little while again those who stood by said to Peter, "You truly are one of them, for you are a Galilean, and your speech shows it." 71 But he began to curse and to swear, "I don’t know this man of whom you speak!"

72 The rooster crowed the second time. Peter remembered the words that Jesus said to him, "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times." When he thought about that, he wept.
