1 Meus irmãos, como podem afirmar que têm fé em nosso glorioso Senhor Jesus Cristo se mostram favorecimento a algumas pessoas?

2 Se, por exemplo, alguém chegar a uma de suas reuniões vestido com roupas elegantes e usando joias caras, e também entrar um pobre com roupas sujas, 3 e vocês derem atenção ao que está bem vestido, dizendo-lhe: "Sente-se aqui neste lugar especial", mas disserem ao pobre: "Fique em pé ali ou sente-se aqui no chão", 4 essa discriminação não mostrará que agem como juízes guiados por motivos perversos?

5 Ouçam, meus amados irmãos: não foi Deus que escolheu os pobres deste mundo para serem ricos na fé? Não são eles os herdeiros do reino prometido àqueles que o amam? 6 Mas vocês desprezam os pobres! Não são os ricos que oprimem vocês e os arrastam aos tribunais? 7 Não são eles que difamam aquele cujo nome honroso vocês carregam?

8 Sem dúvida vocês fazem bem quando obedecem à lei do reino conforme dizem as Escrituras: "Ame seu próximo como a si mesmo". 9 Mas, se mostram favorecimento a algumas pessoas, cometem pecado e são culpados de transgredir a lei.

10 Pois quem obedece a todas as leis, exceto uma, torna-se culpado de desobedecer a todas as outras. 11 Pois aquele que disse: "Não cometa adultério", também disse: "Não mate". Logo, mesmo que não cometam adultério, se matarem alguém, transgredirão a lei.

12 Portanto, em tudo que disserem e fizerem, lembrem-se de que serão julgados pela lei que os liberta. 13 Não haverá misericórdia para quem não tiver demonstrado misericórdia. Mas, se forem misericordiosos, haverá misericórdia quando forem julgados.

14 De que adianta, meus irmãos, dizerem que têm fé se não a demonstram por meio de suas ações? Acaso esse tipo de fé pode salvar alguém? 15 Se um irmão ou uma irmã necessitar de alimento ou de roupa, 16 e vocês disserem: "Até logo e tenha um bom dia; aqueça-se e coma bem", mas não lhe derem alimento nem roupa, em que isso ajuda?

17 Como veem, a fé por si mesma, a menos que produza boas obras, está morta.

18 Mas alguém pode argumentar: "Uns têm fé; outros têm obras". Mostre-me sua fé sem obras e eu, pelas minhas obras, lhe mostrarei minha fé!

19 Você diz crer que há um único Deus. Muito bem! Até os demônios creem nisso e tremem de medo. 20 Quanta insensatez! Vocês não entendem que a fé sem as obras é inútil?

21 Não lembram que nosso antepassado Abraão foi declarado justo por suas ações quando ofereceu seu filho Isaque sobre o altar? 22 Como veem, sua fé e suas ações atuaram juntas e, assim, as ações tornaram a fé completa. 23 E aconteceu exatamente como as Escrituras dizem: "Abraão creu em Deus, e assim foi considerado justo". Ele até foi chamado amigo de Deus! 24 Vejam que somos declarados justos pelo que fazemos, e não apenas pela fé.

25 Raabe, a prostituta, é outro exemplo. Ela foi declarada justa por causa de suas ações quando escondeu os mensageiros e os fez sair em segurança por um caminho diferente. 26 Assim como o corpo sem fôlego está morto, também a fé sem obras está morta.

1 My brothers, don’t hold the faith of our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with partiality. 2 For if a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, comes into your synagogue, and a poor man in filthy clothing also comes in, 3 and you pay special attention to him who wears the fine clothing and say, "Sit here in a good place;" and you tell the poor man, "Stand there," or "Sit by my footstool" 4 haven’t you shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brothers. Didn’t God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Don’t the rich oppress you and personally drag you before the courts? 7 Don’t they blaspheme the honorable name by which you are called?

8 However, if you fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you do well. 9 But if you show partiality, you commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law, and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all. 11 For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not commit murder." Now if you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. 12 So speak and so do as men who are to be judged by the law of freedom. 13 For judgment is without mercy to him who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

14 What good is it, my brothers, if a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith save him? 15 And if a brother or sister is naked and in lack of daily food, 16 and one of you tells them, "Go in peace. Be warmed and filled;" yet you didn’t give them the things the body needs, what good is it? 17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself. 18 Yes, a man will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

19 You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe—and shudder. 20 But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead? 21 Wasn’t Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? 22 You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected. 23 So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness," and he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith. 25 In the same way, wasn’t Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.
