1 Durante três anos houve guerra entre a Aram e Israel. 2 Durante o terceiro ano, enquanto o rei Jeosafá de Judá estava a visitar o rei Acabe de Israel, 3 Acabe disse aos seus oficiais: "Estão a dar-se conta de como os arameus ainda ocupam Ramote-Gileade? E nós aqui estamos, sentados, sem nada fazer para a recuperar!"

4 Depois voltou-se para Jeosafá: "Estarias de acordo em enviar as tuas tropas com as minhas para reaver essa cidade?" Jeosafá respondeu ao rei Acabe: "Com certeza que sim! Tu e eu somos irmãos! O meu povo poderá ficar sob o teu comando e os meus cavalos ao teu serviço. 5 No entanto, vamos primeiro consultar o Senhor sobre isso."

6 O rei Acabe convocou 400 dos seus profetas pagãos e perguntou-lhes: "Devo ir à guerra contra Ramote-Gileade?" Eles responderam-lhe: "Vai, porque o Senhor te concederá a vitória!"

7 Por sua vez, Jeosafá perguntou: "Não haverá aqui um profeta do Senhor? Gostaria de o interrogar também."

8 "Sim, há um", respondeu o rei Acabe, "mas odeio-o, porque nunca profetiza nada de bom! É um tal Micaías, filho de Imlá." Jeosafá replicou: "Acho que não devias falar assim."

9 Então o rei de Israel chamou um dos seus ajudantes: "Vai buscar Micaías, o filho de Imlá, depressa!"

10 O rei de Israel e Jeosafá, rei de Judá, estavam sentados em tronos, com os seus trajes de gala, numa praça à entrada de Samaria, com todos os profetas pagãos profetizando em frente deles. 11 Um dos profetas, Zedequias, filho de Quenaana, fez uns chifres de ferro e declarou: "O Senhor promete que com estes chifres empurrarás na tua frente os arameus, até os teres destruído."

12 E todos os outros concordavam: "Sim!", diziam em coro. "Sobe a Ramote-Gileade e vencerás. O Senhor te fará prosperar nesse empreendimento."

13 O mensageiro encarregado de ir buscar Micaías contou-lhe o que os profetas estavam a declarar e pressionou-o para que dissesse a mesma coisa. 14 Micaías, no entanto, respondeu-lhe: "Tão certo como vive o Senhor, que direi aquilo que o Senhor me mandar dizer."

15 Quando chegou perante o rei, este perguntou-lhe: "Micaías, iremos nós à guerra contra Ramote-Gileade?" Micaías retorquiu: "Sim, com certeza. Terás uma grande vitória e o Senhor te ajudará!"

16 O rei disse-lhe com rispidez: "Quantas vezes te tenho dito que quero que me fales unicamente o que o Senhor te manda dizer?"

17 Então Micaías falou deste modo: "Tive uma visão em que vi todo o Israel disperso pelos montes como ovelhas sem pastor. E o Senhor disse: ‘Não têm pastor porque foi morto. Que cada um vá em paz para a sua casa!’ "

18 Voltando-se para Jeosafá, Acabe lamentou-se: "Não te disse que era isto que iria acontecer? Ele nunca me diz nada de bom; fala sempre mal."

19 Micaías continuou. "Ouve o resto da palavra do Senhor. Eu vi o Senhor sentado sobre o seu trono, com os exércitos celestiais à sua volta. 20 E o Senhor disse: ‘Quem irá convencer Acabe para que vá e morra em Ramote-Gileade?’ Várias sugestões foram feitas. 21 Finalmente, apresentou-se um espírito diante do Senhor que disse: ‘Vou eu. Eu o persuadirei.’ O Senhor perguntou-lhe: ‘Como?’

22 E ele respondeu: ‘Serei um espírito de mentira na boca dos profetas.’ E o Senhor disse: ‘Isso dará resultado; conseguirás o que pretendes; podes ir.’ "

23 Micaías continuou, dirigindo-se ao rei: "Estás a ver que o Senhor pôs um espírito de mentira na boca destes teus profetas. Na realidade o que ele determinou foi o oposto do que têm estado a dizer!"

24 Então Zedequias, o filho de Quenaana, adiantou-se e deu uma bofetada no rosto de Micaías: "Quando foi que o Espírito do Senhor me deixou a mim para falar por ti?"

25 "Não tardará que tenhas a resposta", respondeu-lhe Micaías, "quando te fores esconder no quarto interior!"

26 O rei Acabe mandou que prendessem Micaías: "Levem-no a Amom, o governador da cidade, e a Joás, o meu filho. 27 Digam-lhes: ‘O rei manda pôr este indivíduo no cárcere e alimentá-lo a pão e água, apenas o suficiente para que não morra, até que eu regresse em paz!’ "

28 "Se voltares em paz", insistiu Micaías, "isso será a prova de que o Senhor não falou por mim." Depois voltou-se para o povo que estava a assistir: "Tomem bem nota do que eu disse!"

29 O rei Acabe de Israel e o rei Jeosafá de Judá levaram os seus exércitos contra Ramote-Gileade. 30 O rei de Israel disse a Jeosafá: "Leva tu o fato real que eu irei disfarçado!" Então Acabe foi para a batalha trajando como um simples soldado.

31 O rei de Aram tinha dado ordens aos capitães dos 32 carros que lutassem apenas contra o Acabe. 32 Quando viram o rei Jeosafá vestido com os trajes reais, pensaram: "É este o homem que procuramos." Rodearam-no para o atacar, mas Jeosafá gritou. 33 Logo que viram que não era o rei de Israel, deixaram-no.

34 Contudo, alguém atirou uma flecha ao acaso que foi precisamente ferir Acabe numa juntura da sua armadura. "Levem-me daqui para fora, porque estou ferido", rouquejou ele ao condutor do carro.

35 A batalha ia-se tornando cada vez mais intensa, à medida que o dia avançava. Tiveram que manter o rei Acabe de pé no seu carro diante dos arameus. O sangue que saía da sua ferida escorria no fundo do carro. Finalmente, ao anoitecer, morreu. 36 Estava o Sol a pôr-se, quando começou a correr a notícia por entre as tropas: "Acabou-se, voltemos para casa! 37 O rei morreu!" O seu corpo foi levado para Samaria e enterrado ali. 38 Quando o carro e a armadura foram lavados junto dum poço em Samaria, onde as prostitutas se lavavam, os cães vieram e puseram-se a lamber o sangue do rei, tal como o Senhor dissera que haveria de acontecer.

39 O resto da história de Acabe, incluindo a descrição do seu palácio de marfim e as cidades que construiu, está escrito no Livro das Crónicas dos Reis de Israel. 40 Acabe foi sepultado junto dos seus antepassados. Acazias, seu filho, tornou-se o novo rei de Israel.

41 Em Judá, Jeosafá, o filho de Asa, tinha sido coroado rei no quarto ano do reinado de Acabe de Israel. 42 Jeosafá tinha 35 anos quando ascendeu ao trono e reinou 25 anos em Jerusalém. A sua mãe chamava-se Azuba e era filha de Sili. 43 Fez o que seu pai Asa tinha feito, obedecendo ao Senhor em tudo, e fez sempre o possível por não se desviar dos caminhos de Deus, fazendo o que era reto aos olhos do Senhor. 44 Contudo, não destruiu os santuários pagãos e continuou a queimar ali incenso. Fez também a paz com Acabe, rei de Israel.

45 O resto dos feitos de Jeosafá, o poder que revelou e as guerras que travou, está descrito no Livro das Crónicas dos Reis de Judá. 46 Também mandou fechar todas as casas de prostituição masculina que ainda se mantinham, depois do tempo do seu pai Asa.

47,48 Não havia rei em Edom nessa altura, apenas um governador nomeado pelo rei de Judá. O rei Jeosafá mandou construir grandes navios de Társis para irem a Ofir buscar ouro, mas nunca lá chegaram, porque naufragaram em Eziom-Geber. 49 Acazias, o filho e sucessor do rei Acabe, tinha proposto a Jeosafá que os seus homens fossem também, mas este recusou a sua oferta.

50 Quando Jeosafá morreu, foi enterrado junto dos seus antepassados, em Jerusalém, a cidade do seu antecessor David. O seu filho Jeorão ocupou o trono em seu lugar.

51 Foi no décimo sétimo ano do reinado de Jeosafá, rei de Judá, que Acazias, filho de Acabe, começou a reinar sobre Israel, em Samaria, e reinou durante 2 anos. 52 Não foi um bom rei, pois seguiu nas pisadas do seu pai e da sua mãe e também de Jeroboão, que levou Israel a pecar contra o Senhor. 53 Serviu o deus Baal e adorou-o. Por isso, Acazias suscitou muito a ira do Senhor, Deus de Israel, tal como antes fizera o seu pai.

1 And they continued three years without war between Syria and Israel. 2 And it came to pass in the third year, that Jehoshaphat the king of Judah came down to the king of Israel. 3 And the king of Israel said unto his servants, Know ye that Ramoth in Gilead is ours, and we be still, and take it not out of the hand of the king of Syria?*22.3 still…: Heb. silent from taking it 4 And he said unto Jehoshaphat, Wilt thou go with me to battle to Ramoth-gilead? And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, I am as thou art, my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses. 5 And Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel, Enquire, I pray thee, at the word of the LORD to day. 6 Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, about four hundred men, and said unto them, Shall I go against Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall I forbear? And they said, Go up; for the Lord shall deliver it into the hand of the king. 7 And Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might enquire of him? 8 And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may enquire of the LORD: but I hate him; for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. 15 So he came to the king. And the king said unto him, Micaiah, shall we go against Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall we forbear? And he answered him, Go, and prosper: for the LORD shall deliver it into the hand of the king. 16 And the king said unto him, How many times shall I adjure thee that thou tell me nothing but that which is true in the name of the LORD? 17 And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, as sheep that have not a shepherd: and the LORD said, These have no master: let them return every man to his house in peace. 18 And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, Did I not tell thee that he would prophesy no good concerning me, but evil? 19 And he said, Hear thou therefore the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left. 20 And the LORD said, Who shall persuade Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead? And one said on this manner, and another said on that manner.*22.20 persuade: or, deceive 21 And there came forth a spirit, and stood before the LORD, and said, I will persuade him. 22 And the LORD said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. 29 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth-gilead. 30 And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, I will disguise myself, and enter into the battle; but put thou on thy robes. 41 And Jehoshaphat the son of Asa began to reign over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel. 42 Jehoshaphat was thirty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. 43 And he walked in all the ways of Asa his father; he turned not aside from it, doing that which was right in the eyes of the LORD: nevertheless the high places were not taken away; for the people offered and burnt incense yet in the high places. 44 And Jehoshaphat made peace with the king of Israel. 45 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, and his might that he shewed, and how he warred, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? 46 And the remnant of the sodomites, which remained in the days of his father Asa, he took out of the land. 47 There was then no king in Edom: a deputy was king. 48 Jehoshaphat made ships of Tharshish to go to Ophir for gold: but they went not; for the ships were broken at Ezion-geber.*22.48 made…: or, had ten ships 49 Then said Ahaziah the son of Ahab unto Jehoshaphat, Let my servants go with thy servants in the ships. But Jehoshaphat would not.

50 And Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father: and Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.

51 Ahaziah the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned two years over Israel. 52 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the way of his father, and in the way of his mother, and in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin: 53 For he served Baal, and worshipped him, and provoked to anger the LORD God of Israel, according to all that his father had done.
