1 Agora quero contar-vos o que Deus na sua graça tem feito pelas igrejas da Macedónia. 2 Ainda que tenham passado por muitas dificuldades e apertos, nunca perderam a sua abundante alegria espiritual. E apesar da extrema pobreza arranjaram maneira de se tornarem ricos em generosidade para com os outros. 3 Eles deram não só aquilo que podiam, mas até muito mais, e voluntariamente; disso sou testemunha. 4 Pediram-nos com muita insistência que com esse dinheiro pudessem participar da alegria de ajudar outros crentes. 5 Ultrapassaram até todas as nossas expectativas. Porque primeiramente se consagraram a si mesmos ao Senhor e depois puseram-se à nossa disposição para fazer a vontade de Deus.

6 Isso encorajou-nos a pedir a Tito, que já antes tinha começado esta obra no vosso meio, animando-vos à beneficência, que vos visitasse e entusiasmasse a também completarem a vossa participação. 7 Vocês que são tão ricos em tantos domínios: na fé, na exposição da palavra de Deus e no conhecimento das coisas espirituais, no entusiasmo e na dedicação para connosco, também o devem ser neste privilégio de contribuir com alegria. 8 Não digo isto como uma espécie de imposição. Mas para que o exemplo dos outros vos dê ocasião de provarem que o vosso amor vai além das simples palavras.

9 Vocês conhecem o amor de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo que, sendo rico, tornou-se pobre por amor de vocês, a fim de que pela sua pobreza pudessem enriquecer.

10 Queria sugerir-vos que fossem até ao fim com o que começaram há um ano, pois foram não só os primeiros a propor essa ideia, mas também os primeiros a fazer alguma coisa nesse sentido. 11 Tendo, portanto, começado tão prontamente, é justo que vão até ao fim com a mesma alegria, dando tudo o que estiver nas vossas possibilidades. 12 Quando se dá de boa vontade, a quantidade tem menos importância. Porque no fundo, Deus quer que se dê o que se tem, não o que se não tem.

13 Não se trata, evidentemente, de levar outros a viver desafogados, para vocês passarem a ter necessidades. É antes uma questão de procurar tornar iguais as condições de vida de uns e outros. 14 Presentemente, o vosso nível de vida permite ajudá-los; noutra altura poderá ser o contrário, e assim haverá uma justa repartição. 15 Lembrem-se do que diz a Escritura sobre isto: "O que recolheu muito não teve demais e o que colheu pouco também nada lhe faltou."*8.15 Êx 16.18.

16 Estou muito grato a Deus porque deu a Tito o mesmo interesse e cuidado que eu tenho convosco. 17 Ele aceitou o meu pedido de vos visitar de novo e tomou logo a iniciativa de partir. 18 Com ele enviamos também outro irmão bem conhecido de todas as igrejas pela sua atividade como proclamador do evangelho. 19 Foi até escolhido pelas igrejas para me acompanhar na minha deslocação a Jerusalém, a fim de levar o resultado destas ofertas, as quais, ao mesmo tempo que servem para glorificar o Senhor, mostram a prontidão da vossa beneficência. 20 Indo assim acompanhado, procuro pôr-me ao abrigo de qualquer crítica quanto à maneira como nos responsabilizamos por esta importante soma. 21 Deus bem conhece a nossa honestidade, mas queremos que os outros tenham plena confiança em nós.

22 Estamos a enviar com eles um outro irmão que sabemos, por experiência, ser um cristão fervoroso. Desde que teve conhecimento da vossa prontidão em ajudar materialmente os cristãos, é com particular interesse que se prepara para essa viagem. 23 Portanto vão os três: Tito, como meu colaborador e companheiro, e os outros dois irmãos como apóstolos das igrejas daqui, como homens que honram o Senhor. 24 Portanto, demonstrem-lhes o vosso amor e provem a todas as igrejas que o nosso orgulho a vosso respeito tem razão de ser.

1 Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia; 2 How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. 3 For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves; 4 Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. 5 And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God. 6 Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also. 7 Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also. 8 I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love. 9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich. 10 And herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago. 11 Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have. 12 For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not. 13 For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened: 14 But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality: 15 As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack. 16 But thanks be to God, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you. 17 For indeed he accepted the exhortation; but being more forward, of his own accord he went unto you. 18 And we have sent with him the brother, whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches; 19 And not that only, but who was also chosen of the churches to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by us to the glory of the same Lord, and declaration of your ready mind: 20 Avoiding this, that no man should blame us in this abundance which is administered by us: 21 Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men. 22 And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have oftentimes proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, upon the great confidence which I have in you. 23 Whether any do enquire of Titus, he is my partner and fellowhelper concerning you: or our brethren be enquired of, they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ. 24 Wherefore shew ye to them, and before the churches, the proof of your love, and of our boasting on your behalf.
