1 Jesus voltou para o monte das Oliveiras. 2 Contudo, logo no dia seguinte, de manhã cedo, encontrava-se de novo no templo. Em breve se juntou uma multidão e, sentando-se, começou a falar-lhes. 3 Enquanto falava, os especialistas na Lei e os fariseus trouxeram-lhe uma mulher apanhada em adultério e puseram-na diante do povo:

4 "Mestre, esta mulher foi apanhada em flagrante adultério. 5 A Lei de Moisés ordena que a apedrejemos. Que dizes?"

6 Procuravam, assim, levá-lo a afirmar alguma coisa que pudessem usar contra ele. Jesus, baixando-se, pôs-se a escrever na terra com a ponta do dedo. 7 Eles teimavam em ter uma resposta. Então, endireitando-se, disse: "Está bem, apedrejem-na, mas que a primeira pedra seja lançada por aquele que nunca tenha pecado!" 8 E curvando-se de novo continuou a escrever no pó do chão.

9 E começaram a afastar-se um a um, principiando pelos mais velhos, até que ficou só Jesus com aquela mulher. 10 Tornando a erguer-se, e vendo apenas a mulher, perguntou-lhe: "Onde estão os teus acusadores? Nem um sequer te condenou?"

11 "Não, Senhor!"

Jesus disse-lhe: "Também eu não te condeno. Vai e não tornes a pecar!"

12 Numa outra ocasião, Jesus disse ao povo: "Eu sou a luz do mundo. Quem me segue não andará em trevas, mas terá a luz da vida."

13 Os fariseus exclamaram: "Falas de ti próprio, por isso, o teu testemunho não tem valor!"

14 Jesus disse-lhes: "O que afirmo acerca de mim mesmo é verdadeiro, embora seja eu a dizê-lo, pois sei donde vim e para onde vou, e isso não sabem vocês acerca de mim. 15 Julgam-me, mas de uma forma humana. Contudo, eu não julgo ninguém. 16 Mesmo que eu julgue, o meu julgamento é justo, pois tenho comigo o Pai que me enviou. 17 Na vossa Lei está escrito que, se dois homens concordarem um com o outro acerca de qualquer coisa, o seu testemunho é aceite como verdadeiro. 18 Pois bem: Eu sou uma testemunha e a outra é o meu Pai que me enviou!"

19 "Onde está o teu Pai?", perguntaram. Jesus respondeu: "Não sabem quem sou, portanto, não conhecem o meu Pai. Se me conhecessem, conhecê-lo-iam também a ele."

20 Jesus disse estas coisas no local do templo onde eram recolhidas as ofertas. Ninguém o prendeu, porque não tinha chegado a sua hora.

21 Disse-lhes outra vez: "Vou-me embora. Procurar-me-ão e morrerão nos vossos pecados. Para onde eu vou não podem vocês ir."

22 Os judeus perguntaram: "Acaso pensa em matar-se? Que quer dizer com aquilo, ‘para onde vou não podem vocês ir?’ "

23 Ele disse-lhes: "Vocês são cá de baixo e eu sou de cima. Vocês são do mundo e eu não. 24 Por isso, é que disse que haveriam de morrer nos vossos pecados; porque, se não crerem que eu sou quem sou, morrerão nos vossos pecados."

25 "Declara-nos quem és", insistiram.

Jesus respondeu: "Eu sou aquele que sempre disse que era. 26 Poderia condenar-vos por muitas coisas; mas eu digo aquilo que me transmite aquele que me enviou; e ele é a verdade." 27 No entanto, continuavam sem perceber que era de Deus, o Pai, que lhes falava.

28 Então Jesus disse: "Quando tiverem levantado na cruz o Filho do Homem, compreenderão quem eu sou e que não tenho estado a dar-vos as minhas próprias ideias; antes transmiti-vos o que o Pai me ensinou. 29 E aquele que me enviou está comigo; não me abandonou, pois faço sempre o que lhe agrada."

30 Muitos que o ouviram declarar estas coisas começaram a acreditar que era ele o Cristo. 31 A estes Jesus dizia: "Serão verdadeiramente meus discípulos se viverem obedecendo aos meus ensinos. 32 E conhecerão a verdade e a verdade vos tornará livres."

33 "Mas nós somos descendentes de Abraão", tornaram eles, "e nunca fomos escravos de ninguém. Como é que dizes que seremos livres?"

34 Jesus respondeu: "É realmente como vos digo: todo aquele que viva na prática do pecado é um escravo do pecado. 35 E os escravos não pertencem à família. Mas um filho está ligado para sempre à família. 36 Assim, se o Filho vos libertar, ficarão livres, de verdade.

37 Sim, bem sei que são descendentes de Abraão! Contudo, alguns de vocês tentam matar-me, porque a minha mensagem não encontra abrigo nos vossos corações. 38 O que eu vos digo é aquilo que vi junto de meu Pai; mas é o conselho do vosso pai que vocês seguem."

39 "O nosso pai é Abraão", declararam.

"Não!", respondeu Jesus. "Se fossem filhos de Abraão, seguiriam o seu exemplo! 40 Em vez disso, procuram matar-me, apenas por vos ter dito a verdade que ouvi de Deus. Abraão jamais faria uma coisa dessas! 41 Procedendo assim, é ao vosso verdadeiro pai que obedecem."

Protestaram: "Nós não nascemos de imoralidade sexual; temos um verdadeiro pai que é o próprio Deus."

42 Jesus disse-lhes: "Se Deus fosse o vosso pai, amar-me-iam, porque é da parte de Deus que eu vim. Não estou aqui por resolução minha, antes foi ele que me enviou. 43 Porque não entendem o que vos digo? Porque não podem compreender. 44 Vocês são filhos do vosso pai, o Diabo, e querem praticar a maldade que ele pratica. Desde o princípio ele tem sido homicida e inimigo da verdade; nele não há nada de verdadeiro. Quando ele mente, faz o que lhe é próprio, porque é o pai da mentira. 45 Assim, quando vos digo a verdade, é natural que não acreditem. 46 Qual de vocês me pode acusar com verdade de um único pecado que seja? E, uma vez que vos digo a verdade, porque não acreditam em mim? 47 Todo aquele cujo Pai é Deus escuta as palavras que vêm de Deus. Uma vez que o não fazem, isso só prova que não são de Deus."

48 O povo retorquiu: "Bem dizemos nós que és samaritano e que tens demónio!"

49 "Não", disse Jesus, "não tenho demónio, porque honro o meu Pai, mas vocês desonram-me. 50 E, embora não procure a minha glória, há quem a procure e quem julgue. 51 É realmente como vos digo: quem guarda as minhas palavras não verá a morte!"

52 Os judeus exclamaram: "Agora sabemos que estás possuído por um demónio. Até Abraão e os profetas morreram e, contudo, dizes que obedecer-te faz com que uma pessoa não morra. 53 Serás porventura maior do que o nosso pai Abraão que morreu? E do que os profetas que morreram? Quem julgas tu que és?"

54 Jesus respondeu: "Se estivesse simplesmente a glorificar-me a mim próprio, isso não contaria. O meu Pai, a quem chamam vosso Deus, é quem me honra. 55 Mas nem sequer o conhecem; no entanto, eu conheço-o. Se dissesse qualquer outra coisa, seria tão mentiroso como vocês. Mas, na verdade, eu conheço-o e obedeço-lhe. 56 O vosso pai Abraão alegrou-se ao ver o meu dia. Sabia que eu viria e ficou satisfeito!"

57 Os judeus disseram: "Não tens ainda cinquenta anos e viste Abraão?"

58 Jesus replicou: "É realmente como vos digo: ainda antes de Abraão nascer já eu sou!*8.58 Ver Êx 3.14." 59 Naquela altura, pegaram em pedras para o matar. Contudo, Jesus escondeu-se e, passando por eles, saiu do templo.

1 Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. 2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. 3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, 4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? 6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. 7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. 8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. 9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? 11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. 13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true. 14 Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go. 15 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man. 16 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me. 17 It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true. 18 I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me. 19 Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also. 20 These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come. 21 Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come. 22 Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come. 23 And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. 25 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning. 26 I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him. 27 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father. 28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. 29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. 30 As he spake these words, many believed on him. 31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

33 They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. 35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. 36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. 37 I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. 38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father. 39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham. 40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham. 41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. 42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. 43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. 44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. 45 And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. 46 Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? 47 He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God. 48 Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? 49 Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me. 50 And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth. 51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death. 52 Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death. 53 Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself? 54 Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God: 55 Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. 57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? 58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. 59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
