1 Depois disto, Jesus ficou na Galileia, andando de terra em terra, pois queria conservar-se fora da Judeia, onde os anciãos tramavam a sua morte. 2 Em breve, porém, teria lugar a Festa dos Tabernáculos. 3 E os irmãos de Jesus disseram-lhe que fosse para a Judeia: "Vai para onde os teus discípulos possam ver os teus milagres. 4 Não podes tornar-te conhecido se te esconderes assim. Já que fazes estas coisas, mostra-te ao mundo!" 5 Pois os seus irmãos não acreditavam nele.

6 Jesus respondeu: "Ainda não chegou o meu tempo. Mas o vosso tempo sempre está presente. 7 O mundo não vos pode querer mal; mas a mim aborrece-me, porque o acuso do pecado e das obras más. 8 Vão, pois, que eu seguirei mais tarde, quando chegar a altura." 9 E assim ficou na Galileia.

10 Todavia, depois de os seus irmãos terem partido para a celebração, foi também, embora em segredo, conservando-se longe dos olhares do público. 11 Os judeus procuravam-no na festa, perguntando se alguém o teria visto. 12 Entre a multidão, Jesus era assunto de muitas discussões, dizendo alguns: "É um homem de bem!" Enquanto que outros afirmavam: "Anda mas é a enganar o povo!" 13 Ninguém, aliás, tinha a coragem de falar abertamente acerca dele, com medo dos líderes.

14 A meio da celebração religiosa, Jesus foi ao templo e começou a ensinar o povo. 15 Os anciãos ouviam-no com espanto. "Como pode saber tanta coisa, se não andou nas nossas escolas?"

16 Então Jesus disse-lhes: "O que vos ensino não são os meus pensamentos, mas os de Deus, que me enviou. 17 Se alguém quiser fazer a vontade de Deus, saberá de certeza se o meu ensino vem de Deus ou se é só meu. 18 Todo aquele que apresenta as suas próprias ideias procura ser louvado, mas quem se esforça por honrar quem o enviou é verdadeiro e está a agir com justiça. 19 Não vos deu Moisés a Lei? Contudo, nenhum de vocês cumpre a Lei. Porque procuram matar-me?"

20 A multidão respondeu: "Tens um demónio dentro de ti! Quem procura matar-te?"

21 "Trabalhei num sábado para curar um homem e ficaram espantados. 22 Mas vocês também trabalham ao sábado, quando é para cumprir a Lei de Moisés da circuncisão. Aliás, esta tradição da circuncisão é mais antiga do que a Lei mosaica, pois remonta a Abraão. 23 Se o dia de circuncidar os vossos filhos calha a um sábado, não hesitam em fazê-lo, para não quebrar a Lei de Moisés. Então porque serei eu condenado por curar um homem num sábado? 24 Não devem julgar segundo a aparência, mas segundo a verdadeira justiça!"

25 Algumas das pessoas que viviam ali em Jerusalém diziam entre si: "Não é este o homem que querem matar? 26 Mas ele está aqui, a falar em público, e não lhe dizem nada. Será que os líderes descobriram que é, de facto, o Cristo? 27 Mas como pode ser? Sabemos onde ele nasceu. Quando o Cristo vier, limitar-se-á a aparecer sem que ninguém saiba donde vem."

28 Então Jesus, enquanto ensinava no templo, disse: "Sim, conhecem-me e sabem onde nasci e fui criado, mas aquele que me enviou, que expressa a verdade, vocês não o conhecem. 29 Eu conheço-o, porque sou dele, e foi ele que me enviou." 30 Procuraram prendê-lo, mas ninguém lhe pôs a mão, pois não chegara ainda a hora marcada por Deus.

31 Muitas pessoas, entre as multidões que acorriam ao templo, criam nele: "Quando o Cristo voltar, esperam que ele faça mais sinais do que aqueles que este tem já feito?"

32 Quando souberam o que a multidão pensava, os fariseus e os principais sacerdotes enviaram guardas para prendê-lo. Mas Jesus disse-lhes: 33 "Deverei estar convosco mais algum tempo e depois voltarei para aquele que me enviou. 34 Procurar-me-ão, mas não me acharão. Para onde eu vou não podem vocês ir."

35 Os judeus ficaram intrigados com esta afirmação: "Para onde tenciona ele ir? Talvez pense ir aos judeus doutras terras ou ensinar os não-judeus. 36 O que quererá ele dizer com aquilo: ‘Procurar-me-ão, mas não me acharão. Para onde eu vou não podem vocês ir.’?"

37 No último dia, o momento mais importante da festa, Jesus clamou às multidões: "Se alguém tem sede venha a mim e beba. 38 Pois as Escrituras dizem que do mais íntimo de todo aquele que crê em mim sairão rios de água viva." 39 Referia-se ao Espírito Santo que seria dado a todos quantos cressem nele. Mas o Espírito ainda não fora dado, porque Jesus não voltara ainda à sua glória no céu.

40 Quando a multidão o ouviu dizer isto, muitos entre eles afirmavam: "Não há dúvida de que este homem é o Profeta!" 41 Outros diziam: "É o Cristo!" E outros ainda: "Mas é impossível que o seja! Porventura virá o Cristo da Galileia? 42 Pois as Escrituras dizem claramente que o Cristo nascerá da família real de David, em Belém, a terra onde David nasceu." 43 A multidão tinha opiniões diferentes acerca dele. 44 Havia quem quisesse que fosse preso, mas ninguém se atrevia a tocar-lhe.

45 A guarda do templo, que fora mandada para o prender, voltou para os principais sacerdotes e para os fariseus. "Porque não o trouxeram?", perguntaram.

46 Os guardas responderam: "Nunca ninguém falou como este homem!"

47 "Também vocês foram desencaminhados?", retorquiram os fariseus. 48 "Porventura algum dos líderes judaicos ou dos fariseus creu nele? 49 A multidão ignorante da Lei, essa sim, é gente maldita!"

50 Então Nicodemos, que era um deles, aquele que anteriormente tivera uma entrevista secreta com Jesus, falou: 51 "Será legal condenar um homem antes de ser julgado?"

52 E responderam: "Também tu és um desses galileus? Investiga e verás que da Galileia nunca veio qualquer profeta!"

53 E foram todos para casa.

1 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him. 2 Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand. 3 His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judæa, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. 4 For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world. 5 For neither did his brethren believe in him. 6 Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready. 7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil. 8 Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come. 9 When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.

10 But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret. 11 Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he? 12 And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people. 13 Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.

14 Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. 15 And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? 16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. 17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. 18 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. 19 Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me? 20 The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee? 21 Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel. 22 Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man. 23 If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day? 24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. 25 Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill? 26 But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ? 27 Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is. 28 Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not. 29 But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me. 30 Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. 31 And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?

32 The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him. 33 Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me. 34 Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come. 35 Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles? 36 What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come? 37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

40 Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet. 41 Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? 42 Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was? 43 So there was a division among the people because of him. 44 And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.

45 Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him? 46 The officers answered, Never man spake like this man. 47 Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived? 48 Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him? 49 But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed. 50 Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,) 51 Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth? 52 They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet. 53 And every man went unto his own house.
