1 Seis dias antes do começo das cerimónias da Páscoa, Jesus chegou a Betânia, onde morava Lázaro, a quem tornara a dar vida. 2 Fizeram um jantar em honra de Jesus e Marta servia à mesa e Lázaro estava ali sentado com ele. 3 Então Maria pegou num vaso com três decilitros de perfume caro, feito de essência de nardo, e deitou-o sobre os pés de Jesus, enxugando-os com o cabelo. E toda a casa se encheu daquele belo cheiro.

4 Mas Judas Iscariotes, um dos discípulos, aquele que o iria trair, comentou: 5 "Porque não se vendeu o perfume por trezentas moedas de prata para dar o produto aos pobres?" 6 Falava assim, não porque se preocupasse com os pobres, mas porque estava encarregado do dinheiro dos discípulos e costumava servir-se dele em benefício próprio.

7 Jesus respondeu-lhe: "Deixem-na em paz! Ela fez isto como preparação para o dia em que irei para a sepultura. 8 É que os pobres sempre os terão convosco, mas a mim nem sempre me terão."

9 Quando muitos judeus de Jerusalém souberam da sua chegada, acorreram a vê-lo, a ele e a Lázaro, o ressuscitado. 10 Então os principais sacerdotes decidiram matar Lázaro também, 11 pois fora por causa dele que muitos judeus o tinham seguido, crendo ser Jesus o seu Cristo.

12 No dia seguinte, uma multidão enorme que tinha ido para celebrar a Páscoa soube que Jesus ia a caminho de Jerusalém. 13 Pegaram em ramos de palmeira e vieram ao seu encontro, exclamando:

"Hossana!

Bendito seja aquele que vem em nome do Senhor, que é o Rei de Israel!"*12.13 Sl 118.25-26.

14 Jesus ia montado num jumento novo, dando cumprimento ao que na Escritura estava escrito:

15 "Não receies, ó filha de Sião.

Vê, o teu Rei aproxima-se,

sentado numa cria de jumento."*12.15 Zc 9.9.

16 Naquela altura, os discípulos não compreenderam que era o cumprimento duma profecia. Somente depois de Jesus ter voltado para a sua glória no céu é que repararam no cumprimento das profecias das Escrituras a seu respeito.

17 E aqueles da multidão que tinham visto Jesus chamar Lázaro de novo à vida contavam o que tinha acontecido. 18 Foi esse o principal motivo que levou tantos a saírem ao seu encontro, por terem ouvido dizer que se fizera um tal sinal. 19 Os fariseus disseram entre si: "Perdemos! Olhem como todo o povo vai atrás dele!"

20 Alguns dos gregos que tinham ido a Jerusalém para adorar Deus na Páscoa 21 vieram ter com Filipe, que era de Betsaida da Galileia, e pediram: "Nós queríamos conhecer Jesus!" 22 Filipe falou neste pedido a André e foram juntos ter com Jesus.

23 Jesus esclareceu que chegara a hora de voltar para a sua glória no céu e acrescentou: 24 "É realmente como vos digo: se um grão de trigo, ao cair na terra, não morrer, ficará apenas uma semente isolada. Mas se morrer, produzirá muitos grãos. 25 Quem amar a sua vida perdê-la-á. E quem desprezar a sua vida neste mundo guardá-la-á para a vida eterna. 26 Se alguém quer ser meu discípulo, que venha e me siga, pois os meus servos deverão estar onde eu estiver. E se me seguirem, o Pai os honrará. 27 Agora a minha alma está perturbada. Deverei eu orar para que o Pai me livre desta hora? Mas se foi para isso mesmo que vim! 28 Pai, traz honra ao teu nome!"

E ouviu-se uma voz vinda do céu que disse: "Já o honrei, e glorificá-lo-ei outra vez." 29 Quando a multidão ouviu a voz, alguns julgaram que fosse um trovão, enquanto que outros afirmavam que um anjo lhe tinha falado.

30 Jesus explicou-lhes: "A voz que ouviram foi para o vosso bem e não para o meu. 31 Chegou a hora do mundo ser julgado; a hora também em que o soberano deste mundo será expulso. 32 E quando eu for erguido da Terra atrairei todos a mim." 33 Disse isto indicando a maneira como iria morrer.

34 A multidão perguntou: "A Lei ensina-nos que o Cristo vive para sempre. Porque dizes que o Filho do Homem deverá ser levantado? De quem falas tu?"

35 Jesus respondeu: "A minha luz brilhará para vocês mais algum tempo. Caminhem enquanto têm a luz, para que as trevas não vos apanhem; quem anda nas trevas não sabe para onde vai. 36 Acreditem na luz, enquanto ainda há tempo e então tornar-se-ão filhos da luz." Depois de dizer estas coisas, Jesus retirou-se e ocultou-se deles.

37 Apesar de todos os sinais que tinha feito, havia muita gente que não cria nele; 38 exatamente como Isaías, o profeta, tinha dito:

"Senhor, quem creu na nossa pregação?

A quem foi revelado o poder do Senhor?*12.38 Is 53.1."

39 Por isso, não podiam crer. Porque como Isaías também disse:

40 "São cegos e têm o coração fechado,

de modo que não verão com os seus olhos,

nem entenderão com os seus corações,

nem se arrependerão, para que os cure."*12.40 Is 6.10.

41 Isaías, ao fazer esta revelação, referia-se a Jesus, pois tinha tido uma visão da sua glória*12.41 Ver Is 6.1-5.. 42 Por outro lado, muitos dos líderes judeus acreditavam nele, sem contudo o confessarem, receosos de que os fariseus os expulsassem da sinagoga*12.42 Ver nota a 9.22.. 43 Porquanto davam mais apreço ao louvor dos homens do que ao louvor a Deus.

44 Jesus clamou à multidão: "Quem crê em mim crê naquele que me enviou! 45 E quem me vê a mim vê aquele que me enviou! 46 Vim como a luz que veio ao mundo para que todo o que crê em mim não fique nas trevas. 47 Se alguém ouvir as minhas palavras e não crer, não sou eu quem o julga, pois vim para salvar o mundo e não para julgá-lo. 48 Mas todos quantos me rejeitam, a mim e as minhas palavras, serão julgados no dia do julgamento pelas próprias palavras que lhes falei. 49 Porque o que tenho falado não é de mim mesmo. Apenas vos disse o que o Pai me mandou que vos comunicasse. 50 Os seus preceitos conduzem à vida eterna. Por isso, digo tudo o que ele me mandou dizer."

1 Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. 2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. 3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. 4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him, 5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. 7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. 8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always. 9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.

10 But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; 11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.

12 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. 14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, 15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt. 16 These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him. 17 The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record. 18 For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle. 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.

20 And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast: 21 The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus. 22 Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.

23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. 24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. 25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. 26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour. 27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour. 28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. 29 The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him. 30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. 31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. 32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. 33 This he said, signifying what death he should die. 34 The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man? 35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. 36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.

37 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him: 38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? 39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, 40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. 41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

42 Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: 43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

44 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. 45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. 46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. 47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. 49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
