2 "Sim, eu sei isso tudo. Não me estão a dizer nada de novo.

Como pode alguém ser verdadeiramente justo aos olhos de Deus?

3 Se Deus decidir confrontá-lo,

terá alguma possibilidade de responder

a uma só das mil questões que lhe apresentar?

4 Deus é infinitamente sábio e poderoso.

Quem jamais conseguiu defrontá-lo com sucesso?

5 É capaz de, repentinamente,

derrubar montanhas, na sua cólera;

6 de abanar a Terra, e tirá-la do seu lugar,

de fazer estremecer os seus alicerces.

7 O Sol poderá não aparecer, nem as estrelas brilhar,

se tal for ordenado por ele.

8 Foi só Deus quem estendeu os céus;

ele caminha sobre as ondas do mar.

9 Formou as constelações da Ursa, Orion e Plêiades,

assim como as do Zodíaco, no extremo sul.

10 Seus milagres são enormes e inumeráveis.

11 Deus está junto de nós e não o vemos;

move-se por toda a parte e ninguém o sente.

12 Quando apanha a presa que deseja,

quem pode impedi-lo de o fazer?

Quem ousaria perguntar-lhe: ‘Que estás a fazer?’

13 Deus não refreia a sua ira;

até os aliados de Raab*9.13 Nos relatos babilónicos da criação do mundo, o monstro marinho (Raab) personificava o oceano ou o caos, vencido pelo deus criador. se curvam a seus pés.

14 Quem seria eu, para argumentar com o Deus,

ou para abrir sequer a minha boca diante dele?

15 Mesmo que eu não fosse pecador,

não haveria de proferir uma palavra,

a não ser para implorar misericórdia ao meu juiz.

16 E se as minhas orações fossem respondidas,

dificilmente haveria de crer que a minha voz foi ouvida.

17 Deus é o único que é capaz de me destruir;

multiplica as minhas feridas, sem eu compreender porquê.

18 Impede-me de respirar,

antes me enche de amargura.

19 Em questão de força, ele é o mais forte;

a tribunal, quem o intimaria?

20 Mas eu, seria eu também justo?

A minha boca obriga-me a dizer que não!

Ainda que eu fosse perfeito, em confronto com Deus,

facilmente teria de revelar a minha perversão natural.

21 Ainda que esteja inocente, não ouso considerar-me tal;

não considero a minha vida com valor algum.

22 Aliás, que esteja inocente ou não, é-lhe indiferente,

porque Deus faz acabar a vida tanto dos que o são

como dos que o não são.

23 Para ele é coisa sem grande peso

que a calamidade esmague o inocente.

24 Toda a Terra foi entregue nas mãos dos ímpios;

Deus cega os olhos dos juízes e deixa-os ser parciais.

Se não é ele quem o faz, quem é então?

25 Os meus dias correm mais rápidos que um atleta;

fogem sem ter vislumbrado o bem e a felicidade.

26 Os anos passam por mim como rápidos barcos de junco,

como águias caindo sobre uma presa.

27 Se eu decidisse esquecer as minhas queixas contra Deus,

esquecer a amargura e me pusesse bem disposto,

28 nessa altura, ó Deus, haverias de derramar sobre mim

angústias ainda maiores.

Eu sei que não permitirás que eu seja tido por inocente.

29 Pelo contrário, me condenarás;

por isso, de que serve tentar mudar de atitude?

30 Ainda que me lavasse com a água mais pura

e esfregasse as mãos com o mais forte sabão,

31 mesmo assim, haverias de me atolar num fosso de lama;

até a minha roupa seria considerada, por ti,

menos suja que eu mesmo!

32 E eu não posso defender-me a mim próprio,

porque ele não é um simples humano como eu.

33 Se fosse, poderíamos discutir este assunto,

ao mesmo nível, de homem para homem;

mas não há árbitro possível entre nós,

não há intermediário, não há mediador

34 que possa pôr-nos frente a frente.

Oh! Que ele pare de me castigar,

para que não continue a viver no terror da sua punição!

35 Então sim, poderia falar-lhe sem ter medo

e dizer-lhe ousadamente que não sou culpado.
