1 Os três homens recusaram continuar a responder a Job, por este insistir na sua inocência. 2 Então Eliú, filho de Baraquel, o buzita, da família de Rão, irritou-se, porque Job recusava admitir que tinha pecado e não queria admitir que Deus o castigava com razão. 3 Por outro lado, estava também zangado com os três amigos de Job porque, tendo sido incapazes de responder aos seus argumentos, continuavam, contudo, a condená-lo. 4 Eliú esperou até esta altura para falar, porque os outros eram todos mais velhos que ele. 5 Quando viu que não tinham mais nada a responder-lhe, tomou a palavra, com indignação.

6 E disse: "Eu sou jovem e vocês mais velhos que eu;

por isso, me mantive retirado e calado,

sem ousar dizer o que pensava.

7 Visto que os mais velhos são mais sabedores,

a experiência fala mais alto.

8 Mas a sabedoria e a inteligência que o homem tem

é o espírito que há no homem,

o sopro do Todo-Poderoso que lhe proporciona entendimento.

9 Nem sempre os idosos são sábios,

nem os mais velhos têm sempre conhecimento do que é mais certo.

10 Portanto, escutem-me e permitam-me que expresse a minha opinião.

11 Esperei todo este tempo,

para ver se nas vossas palavras rebuscadas

encontrava alguma explicação profunda.

12 Escutei-vos com muita atenção,

mas nenhum de vocês foi capaz de refutar a Job,

nem ao menos de responder adequadamente às suas afirmações.

13 E não me venham dizer: ‘Descobrimos a sabedoria!’

Pois somente Deus, e não um homem, lhe pode responder.

14 Se Job tivesse discutido comigo,

nunca lhe teria respondido com esse tipo de lógica!

15 Agora aí estão vocês, desiludidos,

esgotada a vossa capacidade de resposta.

16 Haveria eu de continuar a esperar em silêncio? Não!

17 Vou também dar já a minha resposta.

18 O meu espírito me pressiona;

estou cheio de palavras.

19 Sou como um barril de vinho, fechado, sem ventilação!

Estou pronto a rebentar com palavras!

20 Sou obrigado a falar, para poder respirar;

por isso, deixem-me dizer tudo o que preciso, como resposta.

21 Não serei parcial a favor de alguém,

e a ninguém lisonjearei.

22 Se eu fosse hábil na lisonja,

o meu Criador logo me castigaria.
