1 Então Elifaz o temanita respondeu:

2 "Pode uma pessoa fazer alguma coisa para ajudar Deus?

Pode mesmo um sábio ser-lhe útil?

3 Tem o Todo-Poderoso algum benefício, se fores justo?

Teria ele algum lucro, se fosses perfeito?

4 Chamar-te-á a julgamento ou repreender-te-á,

porque és honesto?

5 De forma alguma! Se te castiga é porque és mau!

Os teus pecados são incontáveis!

6 Com certeza, recusaste emprestar dinheiro,

a amigos necessitados,

se não fosse em troca de algum penhor de valia;

sim, despojaste-os e deixaste-os sós.

7 Deves ter recusado água a gente sedenta

e pão a pessoas famintas.

8 Sendo dono de muitas terras e vivendo do fruto delas,

eras honrado diante de todos.

9 Mandaste embora viúvas, sem o auxílio de que precisavam,

e houve órfãos que ficaram destroçados.

10 Por isso, estás agora rodeado de laços

e de pavores repentinos.

11 A escuridão não te deixa ver nada;

é como uma inundação que te afoga.

12 Deus está lá no céu,

para lá do firmamento, mais além das estrelas.

13 No entanto, atreves-te a pensar assim:

‘Por isso mesmo, não pode ver o que faço!

Como poderá Deus exercer o seu julgamento,

através da espessa escuridão do infinito?

14 Porque espessas nuvens o rodeiam e não pode ver;

anda lá por cima, passeando sobre a abóbada celeste!’

15 Não te dás conta, tu, de que aqueles

que trilham os velhos caminhos do pecado

16 são apanhados, mesmo já na sua mocidade,

e os fundamentos arrastados por uma enchente repentina?

17 Eles dizem a Deus:

‘Vai-te embora, Todo-Poderoso! Nada podes fazer por nós!’

18 Que Deus me guarde de vir, alguma vez, a dizer tais coisas!

Esquecem-se que foi Deus

quem encheu os seus lares de boas coisas.

19 Mas agora os retos verão a sua destruição;

os inocentes rir-se-ão deles.

20 ‘Vejam bem!’, dirão estes,

‘o último dos nossos inimigos acaba de ser destruído pelo fogo!’

21 Para de discutir com Deus!

Tem paz com ele e terás, enfim, descanso!

22 Ouve as suas instruções

e armazena-as no teu coração.

23 Se te voltares para o Todo-Poderoso

e puseres em ordem tudo o que está mal na tua casa,

então a tua vida será refeita.

24 Se abandonares o amor ao dinheiro

e deitares fora o ouro de Ofir,

25 então o Todo-Poderoso será para ti como ouro;

será como prata valiosa!

26 Então terás prazer no Todo-Poderoso

e olharás para Deus.

27 Orarás a ele e te ouvirá;

cumprirás todas as promessas que lhe fizeste.

28 Seja o que for que desejares, ser-te-á concedido!

A luz do céu iluminará o caminho à tua frente.

29 Quando alguém for humilhado e tu disseres: ‘Coragem!’,

então o humilde será salvo.

30 Ele libertará até alguém que não é inocente,

por meio da pureza das tuas mãos."
