2 "Ouçam! Deixem-me falar!

Seja essa a consolação que vocês me dão!

3 Permitam que eu fale livremente;

quando tiver encerrado a minha tese,

zombem à vontade da minha pessoa.

4 Estou a queixar-me de Deus e não de um homem;

não admira que o meu espírito esteja tão perturbado.

5 Olhem para mim e pasmem;

ponham a mão na boca, de espanto.

6 Até eu, olhando para mim próprio, me horrorizo;

fico estupefacto e estremeço.

7 Porque é que os ímpios têm vidas longas,

se tornam respeitados e prestigiados na sua velhice?

8 Vivem o suficiente para verem os filhos tornarem-se maduros;

ficam rodeados de netos.

9 Os seus lares estão ao abrigo de qualquer terror

e Deus não os castiga.

10 Possuem gado que se multiplica;

as suas vacas dão à luz sem perder as crias.

11 Deixam correr as suas crianças como cabritos;

os seus filhos passam o tempo a dançar e a cantar.

12 Cantam ao som de tambores e da harpa;

alegram-se ao som da flauta.

13 São prósperos, ao longo da sua vida,

e em paz descem ao mundo dos mortos.

14 Dizem a Deus: ‘Afasta-te de nós, deixa-nos em paz!

Não queremos saber das tuas ordens!’

15 ‘Quem é esse Todo-Poderoso?’, perguntam com ar de troça.

‘Porque haveríamos de interceder junto dele? Que bem nos fará?’

16 Entretanto, a prosperidade que possuem não depende deles,

nem está segura nas suas mãos.

Portanto, longe de mim o conselho dos ímpios!

17 Quantas vezes se apaga a lâmpada do ímpio

e se contempla a sua destruição?

Quantas vezes a desgraça cai sobre eles?

Quantas vezes Deus os castiga com dureza?

18 Quantas vezes são como a palha levada pelos ventos

ou como o pó da terra arrastado pelo furacão?

19 Contudo, vocês dizem:

‘Deus castiga nos filhos os pecados do pai!’

Mas o pai faltoso é que deveria pagar pelo seu erro,

a fim de que aprendesse a lição!

20 Que cada um veja a sua própria destrução,

e bebam, até à última gota, da ira do Todo-Poderoso.

21 Quando tiver morrido, terminada a sua vida,

que lhe importará que a sua família sofra?

22 Na verdade, quem seria capaz

de ensinar sabedoria a Deus, o supremo juiz?

23 Alguns levam uma vida feliz e tranquila e morrem abastados,

24 no meio das riquezas, gordos e prósperos.

25 Entretanto, outros morrem cheios de amargura,

sem nunca terem conhecido nada de bom na vida.

26 Ambos acabam enterrados no mesmo pó da terra,

ambos comidos pelos mesmos vermes.

27 Eu conheço bem os vossos pensamentos;

as vossas ideias acerca de mim são injustas!

28 Vão contar-me casos de homens ricos e perversos

que foram abatidos por causa dos seus pecados?

29 Perguntem àqueles que viajam;

não acreditam naquilo que eles contam?

30 O mau, habitualmente, é poupado no dia da calamidade

e poupado no dia da ira de Deus.

31 Ninguém ousa censurá-lo abertamente;

ninguém lhe dá a paga por aquilo que fez.

32 Depois é sepultado num rico mausoléu

e um guarda de honra fica junto do seu túmulo.

33 O seu funeral é acompanhado por um enorme cortejo

e é com suavidade que a terra lhe é lançada em cima.

34 Como podem vocês então consolar-me,

se os vossos pensamentos estão errados, logo à partida?"

17 How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them!
