1 A arca ainda ficou na Filisteia uns sete meses. 2 Os filisteus chamaram, por fim, os seus sacerdotes e adivinhos e perguntaram-lhes: "Que vamos fazer com a arca do Senhor quando a enviarmos de volta para a sua terra?"

3 "Devem devolvê-la com uma oferta", disseram. "Enviem uma oferta de culpa, para que a praga seja suspensa. Se isso não acontecer, saberão que afinal não foi Deus quem mandou a praga."

4 "Que oferta de culpa vamos nós mandar?", perguntaram.

"Mandem cinco modelos em ouro do tumor causado pela praga e cinco outros modelos em ouro dos ratos que devastaram a terra toda (as cidades principais e as outras povoações). 5 Se assim fizerem e depois derem louvores ao Deus de Israel é possível que pare de vos perseguir, a vocês e aos vossos deuses. 6 Não sejam teimosos e rebeldes como o Faraó e os egípcios que não deixaram partir Israel sem que Deus os tivesse destruído com pragas tremendas.

7 Façam um carro novo, atrelem-lhe duas vacas que tenham tido crias há pouco tempo e que nunca tenham levado um jugo; separem as crias mantendo-as no estábulo. 8 Ponham a arca do Senhor no carro e ao lado um cofre com os modelos em ouro, dos ratos e dos tumores, e deixem as vacas partir na direção que quiserem. 9 Se atravessarem o limite da nossa terra em Bete-Semes, então ficarão a saber que foi Deus quem trouxe este grande mal sobre nós. Se não, é porque se tratou simplesmente de um acaso, não foi nada enviado por Deus."

10 Deram pois execução a estas indicações. Duas vacas, que ainda amamentavam as crias, foram atreladas a um carro e os bezerros encerrados no estábulo. 11 Puseram depois a arca do Senhor e o cofre que continha os ratos e os tumores de ouro em cima do carro. 12 Logo as vacas se encaminharam diretamente em direção a Bete-Semes, berrando à medida que iam andando, e os governadores filisteus seguiram o carro até à fronteira. 13 O povo daquela localidade israelita estava a ceifar o trigo no vale e ao verem chegar a arca exultaram de alegria.

14 O carro veio até ao campo de um homem chamado Josué e parou ao pé duma grande rocha. A gente dali fez uma grande fogueira com a própria madeira do carro, matou as vacas e ofereceram-nas em sacrifício ao Senhor como holocausto. 15 Vários homens da tribo de Levi desceram do carro a arca e o cofre com os ratos e os tumores de ouro e colocaram-nos sobre aquela grande pedra. Muitos outros holocaustos e sacrifícios foram oferecidos ao Senhor naquele dia pela povoação de Bete-Semes.

16 Os cinco governadores filisteus, depois de terem visto tudo aquilo, retiraram-se e regressaram a Ecrom nesse mesmo dia. 17 Os cinco modelos de tumores que tinham sido enviados pelos filisteus, como oferta de expiação de culpa ao Senhor, representavam ofertas por cada uma das cinco cidades dos filisteus: Asdode, Gaza, Asquelom, Gate e Ecrom. 18 Os ratos de ouro eram para aplacar a ira de Deus, em representação das outras cidades filisteias, tanto as que tinham muralhas como as povoações do campo que eram controladas pelos cinco governadores principais. Aquela grande rocha em Bete-Semes, que foi testemunha destes acontecimentos, ainda hoje pode ser vista no campo de Josué.

19 Aconteceu, no entanto, que Deus teve de matar setenta homens de Bete-Semes, porque se atreveram a olhar para dentro da arca. O povo entristeceu-se por causa daquela grande desgraça entre a população. 20 "Quem é que pode manter-se perante o Senhor, este Deus santo?", gritavam. "Para onde havemos de mandar a arca?" 21 E resolveram enviar mensageiros a Quiriate-Jearim dizendo-lhes que os filisteus tinham devolvido a arca do Senhor. "Venham buscá-la!", pediram-lhes.

1 And the ark of the LORD was in the country of the Philistines seven months. 2 And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the LORD? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place. 3 And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you. 4 Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.*6.4 you: Heb. them 5 Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land. 6 Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?*6.6 wonderfully: or, reproachfully*6.6 the people: Heb. them 7 Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them: 8 And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go. 9 And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.*6.9 he: or, it

10 And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home: 11 And they laid the ark of the LORD upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods. 12 And the kine took the straight way to the way of Beth-shemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh. 13 And they of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it. 14 And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Beth-shemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered the kine a burnt offering unto the LORD. 15 And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the LORD. 16 And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day. 17 And these are the golden emerods which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering unto the LORD; for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Askelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one; 18 And the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of Abel, whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Beth-shemite.*6.18 great…: or, great stone

19 And he smote the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter. 20 And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us?

21 And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjath-jearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the LORD; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.
