1 Porque é que o Todo-Poderoso não estabelece

um tempo de julgamento sobre a Terra

e porque não veem esse dia chegar os que o conhecem?

Porque hão de ser obrigados a esperar, em vão,

os que creem nele?

2 Fomos submergidos por uma onda de crimes;

os limites das propriedades têm sido alterados,

rebanhos inteiros são roubados.

3 Até levam os jumentos dos pobres e dos órfãos;

as viúvas são obrigadas a entregar o boi que têm, como penhor.

4 Os necessitados são postos de parte;

são coagidos a sair do caminho, ao cruzarem-se com os grandes.

5 Como os burros selvagens do deserto,

os pobres passam dias inteiros a tentar apanhar alimento,

para se manterem com vida;

procuram comida para os filhos em terras desertas.

6 Comem o que vão encontrando, o que cresce ao acaso,

ou então têm de vindimar as vinhas dos maus.

7 Passam a noite a tremer de frio,

sem nada para os cobrir.

8 Ficam encharcados com as chuvadas,

trazidas pelos ventos das montanhas,

e abrigam-se em cavernas, nas rochas, por falta dum lar.

9 Os traidores são capazes, até,

de arrancar criancinhas órfãs de pai, do peito das mães,

e de raptar os bebés dos pobres,

antes que lhes peçam emprestado dinheiro ou comida.

10 Os desventurados são coagidos a andar nus,

sem roupa para se cobrirem,

e a carregar comida para outros,

enquanto eles próprios desfalecem com fome.

11 São forçados a pisar o azeite no lagar, sem poder prová-lo,

e a esmagar cachos de uvas, estando a morrer de sede.

12 Os gemidos dos moribundos clamam desde a cidade

e os feridos rogam que os socorram;

contudo, Deus não atende aos seus lamentos.

13 Os pecadores rebelam-se contra a luz

e não se identificam com os retos e os bons.

14 São assassinos que ao erguer-se, logo de manhã cedo,

só têm em mente matar o pobre e o necessitado;

de noite atacam os ladrões.

15 O adúltero espera apenas que caia o crepúsculo e diz para consigo:

‘É uma boa altura, porque ninguém me vê!’

Esconde a cara para que ninguém o reconheça.

16 A noite, para os ladrões, serve para assaltar casas e o dia para dormir;

não lhes interessa mostrarem-se sob a luz do dia.

17 A noite mais escura, para eles, é como o amanhecer;

são aliados naturais dos terrores das trevas.

18 São como espuma na superfície da água!

Tudo o que possuem é amaldiçoado

e, como tal, não voltam às suas vinhas.

19 O mundo dos mortos consome os pecadores,

tal como a neve se derrete com o calor e a seca.

20 Aos pecadores, até a sua própria mãe os esquece;

só servem para que os vermes os comam regaladamente.

Ninguém se lembrará mais deles!

Os perversos serão abatidos como uma árvore num ciclone.

21 E isso, porque exploram aqueles velhos,

que viviam sozinhos sem filhos para os protegerem,

e desprezam as pobres viúvas.

22 Contudo, Deus, na sua força,

destrói os ímpios, ainda que firmemente estabelecidos;

quando ele aparece, deixam de estar seguros.

23 Deus permite que vivam à vontade,

mas vigia os caminhos que escolhem seguir.

24 Ainda que agora pareçam muito seguros e fortes,

de um momento para o outro ir-se-ão, como toda a gente,

ceifados como espigas maduras.

25 Poderá alguém desmentir-me?

Poderá alguém dizer que estou a mentir ou que estou errado?"
