Para qual dos santos te voltarás?

2 Porque a ira destrói o insensato

e a inveja mata o tolo.

3 Já vi o insensato estabelecer raízes

e ser temporariamente bem sucedido;

contudo, de repente toda a sua casa foi amaldiçoada.

4 Os seus filhos são defraudados

sem que haja alguém que os defenda.

5 As suas propriedades são pilhadas e as riquezas que têm

servem para satisfazer a ganância de muitos outros,

mas não deles próprios!

6 A aflição abate-se sobre eles para os castigar,

por terem semeado sementes de pecado.

7 A humanidade nasce para a miséria,

tal como as chamas se erguem do fogo para o ar.

8 Se fosse eu, buscaria mais a Deus,

e lhe entregaria o meu problema.

9 Porque ele faz coisas maravilhosas,

milagres sem conta.

10 Manda a chuva sobre a terra para a regar.

11 Dá prosperidade ao pobre e ao humilde

e põe os que sofrem em lugar seguro.

12 Contraria os planos dos ardilosos,

de modo que as suas mãos nada possam executar.

13 Apanha os sábios na sua própria astúcia

e os seus esquemas caem por terra.

14 Por isso, andam tateando como cegos em plena luz;

nem por ser de dia veem melhor do que de noite.

15 Deus protege os órfãos das garras desses opressores.

16 Assim, finalmente, os que vivem mal têm esperança;

mas os malvados têm de calar a sua boca.

17 Feliz é aquele a quem Deus corrige!

Oh! Não desprezes a correção do Todo-Poderoso!

18 Porque ainda que fira, ele mesmo trata e cura.

19 Livrar-te-á, sempre que for preciso,

de forma que o mal não te afetará definitivamente.

20 Guardar-te-á da morte e da fome

e do poder das armas, em tempo da guerra.

21 Estarás protegido do maldizente;

não terás de recear quando vier a desgraça.

22 Rir-te-ás na guerra e na fome;

os animais selvagens não te meterão mais medo;

todos os animais perigosos se reconciliarão contigo.

23 Pois farás aliança até com as pedras do campo

e os animais da terra conviverão em paz contigo.

24 Verás que a tua casa está em segurança;

quando tiveres de te ausentar, para visitar o teu rebanho,

contarás os teus bens e concluirás que nada te falta.

25 A tua descendência se multiplicará;

os teus filhos serão tão numerosos como a erva.

26 Terás uma vida longa e boa;

serás como os cereais que só se recolhem

quando chega exatamente o tempo devido.

27 A experiência tem-me mostrado que tudo isto é verdade;

por isso, para teu próprio bem, ouve o meu conselho!"
