1 Passados estes dias, foi Job quem começou a falar e amaldiçoou o dia do seu nascimento. 2 Ele disse:

3 "Que desapareça o dia em que nasci,

o momento em que fui concebido!

4 Que nunca mais seja lembrado!

Que nem sequer Deus o recorde!

Que fique mergulhado nas trevas eternas!

5 Sim, a escuridão se apodere dele

e nuvens negras o envolvam!

Seja riscado do calendário!

6 Que as trevas tomem conta daquela noite

e não consiga encontrar a alegria

que habita entre os dias do ano,

e nunca mais seja contado entre os meses!

7 Seja recordada como uma noite gelada e triste

e nela não se ouçam mais manifestações de alegria!

8 Aqueles que sabem amaldiçoar os dias

e esconjuram o monstro marinho*3.8 Em hebraico, leviatan. Criatura de grandes dimensões, de identificação incerta, que tem sido caracterizada como dragão, serpente marinha ou polvo gigante., a amaldiçoem!

9 As estrelas da noite desapareçam;

esperem ansiosas pela luz e nunca mais a vejam,

nunca mais vejam a luz da manhã!

10 Seja amaldiçoado por não ter fechado o seio de minha mãe,

por ter deixado que eu nascesse para toda esta aflição!

11 Porque não morri eu ao nascer?

12 Porque me deixou a parteira viver?

Porque razão me alimentaram com o leite materno?

13 Se ao menos tivesse morrido ao nascer,

estaria agora sossegado, repousaria descansado,

14 Estaria junto de governantes e chefes de estado,

que construíram para si enormes monumentos,

hoje transformados em montes de escombros;

15 Ou estaria com príncipes ricos em ouro

que encheram de prata os seus palácios.

16 Oh! Se eu tivesse sido um aborto

que não tivesse chegado a respirar nem a ver a luz!

17 É que na morte o malvado cessa de perturbar

e os que estão cansados da vida repousam.

18 Lá, até os prisioneiros estão à vontade,

sem carcereiros a vigiá-los.

19 Lá, encontra-se tanto o rico como o pobre;

o escravo está igualmente livre do seu senhor.

20 Oh! Porque é que a luz e a vida hão de ser dadas

àqueles que vivem na miséria e amargura?

21 Aos que desejam a morte sem que ela venha,

que a procuram escavando, mais do que tesouros escondidos?

22 Que alívio abençoado,

quando acabam por morrer!

23 Porque é que se deixa um homem nascer,

se Deus lhe vai dar unicamente uma vida sem esperança,

sem utilidade, cheia de frustrações?

24 Não consigo comer, porque ando a suspirar de aflição;

os meus gemidos jorram como água.

25 Aquilo que sempre receei acabou por me acontecer.

26 Não tenho paz, nem tranquilidade;

não consigo descansar, vivo em desassossego."

11 Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly? 12 Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck? 13 For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest, 14 With kings and counsellors of the earth, which built desolate places for themselves; 15 Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver: 16 Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light. 17 There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.*3.17 weary: Heb. wearied in strength 18 There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor. 19 The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.

20 Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul; 21 Which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures;*3.21 long: Heb. wait 22 Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave? 23 Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in? 24 For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.*3.24 I eat: Heb. my meat 25 For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.*3.25 the thing…: Heb.
