1 Enquanto Moisés estava junto ao monte Sinai, 2 o Senhor deu-lhe estas instruções para o povo de Israel: "Quando chegarem à terra que vos vou dar, devem deixar a terra repousar perante o Senhor em cada sete anos. 3 Durante seis anos podem semear, vindimar, ceifar; 4 mas durante o sétimo ano a terra deve repousar diante do Senhor, sem ser cultivada. Nesse ano então não semeiem, nem vindimem, nem ceifem. 5 Nem tão-pouco ceifem o que nascer por si mesmo nas searas da última sementeira; nem apanhem os bagos de uva que ainda aparecem; porque é um ano de repouso para a terra. 6 Mas aquilo que nascer nesse mesmo ano será livre para toda a gente; para vocês, para os escravos, e para qualquer estrangeiro que viva convosco. 7 E da mesma forma também o gado e qualquer animal deverá ser deixado a pastar e a comer do que nascer nesse ano.

8 Após sete períodos de sete anos, somando 49 anos, 9 no dia 10 do sétimo mês, no dia da expiação, as trombetas deverão tocar por toda a terra com um som longo e forte. 10 Porque esse ano será santo; é um tempo de se proclamar a liberdade através da terra para todos os que se tornaram escravos por causa de dívidas, e em que serão canceladas todas as dívidas, públicas ou privadas. É um ano em que todas as propriedades familiares vendidas tornarão aos seus proprietários originais ou aos seus herdeiros.

11 Será um ano de contentamento! Nele não semearão, nem colherão as searas, nem as vindimarão; será um ano santo de jubileu para vocês. 12 Nesse ano o vosso alimento será o que naturalmente vos nascer nos campos.

13 Durante o ano de jubileu cada um voltará à posse da propriedade original da sua família.

14 Portanto, se venderes ao teu próximo ou dele comprares, que não haja prejuízo ou opressão ao teu irmão! 15 Deves calcular o preço de compra conforme os anos que já passaram, desde o jubileu anterior; e o outro deve vender-te tendo também em conta os anos de produção que faltam ainda. 16 Se for ainda daí a muitos anos, o preço será mais elevado; se pelo contrário já faltar pouco tempo até lá, então o seu custo descerá. Porque o que efetivamente estão negociando são os anos possíveis de colheita que o novo proprietário poderá obter da terra, antes que volte à vossa posse. 17 Devem respeitar o vosso Deus e nunca praticar a opressão. Porque eu sou o Senhor, o vosso Deus.

18 Obedeçam às minhas leis se querem viver seguros na terra. 19 Se obedecerem, a terra vos dará abundantes colheitas e poderão comer os seus frutos com segurança. 20 Vocês hão de perguntar: ‘O que é que comeremos no sétimo ano, visto que não nos é permitido plantar nem colher nesse ano?’ 21 A resposta é esta: ‘Abençoar-vos-ei com abundantes searas no sexto ano, 22 de tal forma que terão o que comer até que as colheitas do oitavo ano se façam.’

23 E lembrem-se que a terra é minha; por isso não poderão vendê-la com carácter permanente. Vocês estão a explorar uma terra que é minha. 24 Todo o contrato de venda deverá permitir que a terra possa ser, em qualquer, altura resgatada por aquele que vende.

25 Se alguém vier a empobrecer e tiver de vender parte da sua terra, o seu parente próximo pode resgatá-la. 26 E se não tiver ninguém que possa resgatá-la e ele próprio conseguir dinheiro suficiente, 27 então poderá tornar a comprá-la por um preço, descontando o número de anos que esteve na posse do comprador; e aquele que a detinha é obrigado a aceitar o dinheiro e a devolver-lhe a propriedade. 28 Mas se o primeiro proprietário não for capaz de a resgatar, então a terra pertencerá ao seu novo possuidor até ao ano do jubileu; sendo nesse ano devolvida ao primeiro.

29 Se alguém vender uma casa numa cidade murada, tem um ano para poder resgatá-la; tem pleno direito de o fazer, durante esse tempo. 30 Contudo, se nesse espaço de tempo não o fizer, então a casa ficará definitivamente na posse do novo proprietário, e nem sequer no ano do jubileu voltará à posse da primeira pessoa. 31 Se a venda se der numa vila, isto é, um conjunto de casas que não são protegidas por muralha, então o negócio decorre como se se tratasse de um terreno; a casa é resgatável em qualquer ocasião, e voltará ao proprietário original no ano do jubileu.

32 Há contudo uma exceção: são as casas dos levitas; ainda que estejam em cidades da sua possessão, 33 essas poderão ser resgatadas em qualquer momento, e deverão ser devolvidas ao proprietário de origem no ano do jubileu; visto que a estes não é distribuída terra, à semelhança das outras tribos; receberão apenas casas nas cidades (mais os campos circunvizinhos). 34 Aos levitas não é permitido vender campos nas terras dos arredores das suas cidades, porque são possessão sua permanente, e de ninguém mais devem ser.

35 Se o vosso irmão empobrecer, serão responsáveis por ajudá-lo. Deverão convidá-lo a viver convosco como se ajuda a um estrangeiro ou hóspede. 36 Temam a Deus e deixem o vosso irmão viver convosco; 37 nem tão-pouco lhe peçam juros sobre o dinheiro que lhe emprestarem. Não se esqueçam: não levem juros; e deem-lhe aquilo de que ele precisar ao preço do custo; não tentem fazer negócio. 38 Porque eu, o Senhor, vosso Deus, vos tirei da terra do Egito para vos dar a terra de Canaã e para ser o vosso Deus.

39 Se um vosso irmão israelita vier a empobrecer e se vender a um de vocês, 40 não deverão tratá-lo como escravo, mas antes como um assalariado ou como um hóspede; ele apenas vos servirá até ao ano de jubileu. 41 Nesse ano poderá deixar-vos, com os seus filhos, e retornar à sua família e àquilo que é dele. 42 Porque eu vos trouxe da terra do Egito e vocês são meus servos. Por isso, não poderão ser vendidos como escravos comuns, 43 nem tratados duramente. Temam o vosso Deus.

44 Contudo, poderão comprar escravos das nações estrangeiras que vivam à vossa volta. 45 Podem também comprar os filhos dos estrangeiros que vivam convosco, ainda que tendo nascido na vossa terra. Serão vossos escravos permanentemente, 46 podendo passar para os vossos filhos. Mas quanto aos que são vossos irmãos, o povo de Israel, esses não serão tratados da mesma maneira.

47 Se um estrangeiro que viva no vosso meio se tornar rico, e se um israelita empobrecer e se vender ao estrangeiro, ou à família desse estrangeiro, 48 poderá ser resgatado por um dos seus irmãos, 49 ou pelo tio, sobrinho ou qualquer parente que lhe seja próximo. Pode mesmo resgatar-se a si mesmo, se obtiver dinheiro suficiente. 50 O preço da sua libertação será propocional ao número de anos que faltarem até ao ano do jubileu, e será calculado segundo o salário de um trabalhador durante esse número de anos. 51 Se faltarem ainda muitos anos até ao jubileu, deverá pagar uma quantia aproximada à que recebeu no ato da compra. 52 Se já tiver passado tempo, e faltarem poucos anos até ao jubileu, então terá de repor apenas uma parte do que recebeu ao vender-se. 53 Será tratado como um trabalhador assalariado e não com dureza na vossa casa.

54 Se não tiver sido resgatado entretanto, ao chegar o ano do jubileu, ele e os seus filhos sairão livres. 55 Porque o povo de Israel é meu servo. Trouxe-o da terra do Egito. Eu sou o Senhor, o vosso Deus.

8 And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years. 9 Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land.*25.9 of the jubile: Heb. loud of sound 10 And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family. 11 A jubile shall that fiftieth year be unto you: ye shall not sow, neither reap that which groweth of itself in it, nor gather the grapes in it of thy vine undressed. 12 For it is the jubile; it shall be holy unto you: ye shall eat the increase thereof out of the field. 13 In the year of this jubile ye shall return every man unto his possession. 14 And if thou sell ought unto thy neighbour, or buyest ought of thy neighbour’s hand, ye shall not oppress one another: 15 According to the number of years after the jubile thou shalt buy of thy neighbour, and according unto the number of years of the fruits he shall sell unto thee: 16 According to the multitude of years thou shalt increase the price thereof, and according to the fewness of years thou shalt diminish the price of it: for according to the number of the years of the fruits doth he sell unto thee. 17 Ye shall not therefore oppress one another; but thou shalt fear thy God: for I am the LORD your God.

18 Wherefore ye shall do my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them; and ye shall dwell in the land in safety. 19 And the land shall yield her fruit, and ye shall eat your fill, and dwell therein in safety. 20 And if ye shall say, What shall we eat the seventh year? behold, we shall not sow, nor gather in our increase: 21 Then I will command my blessing upon you in the sixth year, and it shall bring forth fruit for three years. 22 And ye shall sow the eighth year, and eat yet of old fruit until the ninth year; until her fruits come in ye shall eat of the old store.

23 The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land is mine; for ye are strangers and sojourners with me.*25.23 for ever: or, to be quite cut off: Heb. for cutting off 24 And in all the land of your possession ye shall grant a redemption for the land.

25 If thy brother be waxen poor, and hath sold away some of his possession, and if any of his kin come to redeem it, then shall he redeem that which his brother sold. 26 And if the man have none to redeem it, and himself be able to redeem it;*25.26 himself…: Heb. his hand hath attained and found sufficiency 27 Then let him count the years of the sale thereof, and restore the overplus unto the man to whom he sold it; that he may return unto his possession. 28 But if he be not able to restore it to him, then that which is sold shall remain in the hand of him that hath bought it until the year of jubile: and in the jubile it shall go out, and he shall return unto his possession. 29 And if a man sell a dwelling house in a walled city, then he may redeem it within a whole year after it is sold; within a full year may he redeem it. 30 And if it be not redeemed within the space of a full year, then the house that is in the walled city shall be established for ever to him that bought it throughout his generations: it shall not go out in the jubile. 31 But the houses of the villages which have no wall round about them shall be counted as the fields of the country: they may be redeemed, and they shall go out in the jubile.*25.31 they may…: Heb. redemption belongeth unto it 32 Notwithstanding the cities of the Levites, and the houses of the cities of their possession, may the Levites redeem at any time. 33 And if a man purchase of the Levites, then the house that was sold, and the city of his possession, shall go out in the year of jubile: for the houses of the cities of the Levites are their possession among the children of Israel.*25.33 a man…: or, one of the Levites redeem them 34 But the field of the suburbs of their cities may not be sold; for it is their perpetual possession.

39 And if thy brother that dwelleth by thee be waxen poor, and be sold unto thee; thou shalt not compel him to serve as a bondservant:*25.39 compel…: Heb. serve thyself with him with the service, etc 40 But as an hired servant, and as a sojourner, he shall be with thee, and shall serve thee unto the year of jubile: 41 And then shall he depart from thee, both he and his children with him, and shall return unto his own family, and unto the possession of his fathers shall he return. 42 For they are my servants, which I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: they shall not be sold as bondmen.*25.42 as…: Heb. with the sale of a bondman 43 Thou shalt not rule over him with rigour; but shalt fear thy God. 44 Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids. 45 Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession. 46 And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour.*25.46 they…: Heb. ye shall serve yourselves with them

47 And if a sojourner or stranger wax rich by thee, and thy brother that dwelleth by him wax poor, and sell himself unto the stranger or sojourner by thee, or to the stock of the stranger’s family:*25.47 wax rich…: Heb. his hand obtain, etc 48 After that he is sold he may be redeemed again; one of his brethren may redeem him: 49 Either his uncle, or his uncle’s son, may redeem him, or any that is nigh of kin unto him of his family may redeem him; or if he be able, he may redeem himself. 50 And he shall reckon with him that bought him from the year that he was sold to him unto the year of jubile: and the price of his sale shall be according unto the number of years, according to the time of an hired servant shall it be with him. 51 If there be yet many years behind, according unto them he shall give again the price of his redemption out of the money that he was bought for. 52 And if there remain but few years unto the year of jubile, then he shall count with him, and according unto his years shall he give him again the price of his redemption. 53 And as a yearly hired servant shall he be with him: and the other shall not rule with rigour over him in thy sight. 54 And if he be not redeemed in these years, then he shall go out in the year of jubile, both he, and his children with him.*25.54 in these…: or, by these means 55 For unto me the children of Israel are servants; they are my servants whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.
