1 Quando o rei Jabim de Hazor teve conhecimento do que estava a acontecer, enviou mensagens urgentes aos seguintes reis: a Jobabe rei de Madom e aos reis de Simrom e Acsafe; 2 a todos os reis das colinas do norte, aos reis da região de Arabá a sul de Quinerete, aos da planície costeira, aos reis da zona das montanhas de Dor a ocidente, para os lados do mar; 3 aos reis dos cananeus do oriente e do ocidente, aos dos amorreus, dos hititas, dos perizeus, dos jebuseus nas montanhas, e dos heveus nas cidades e falésias do monte Hermon na terra de Mizpá.

4,5 Todos responderam, mobilizando os exércitos e aliando-se, a fim de esmagar Israel. Aquela enorme frente militar, reforçada por batalhões de cavalaria e por carros de guerra, cobria toda a terra nas proximidades das fontes de Merom; era um mar de gente que se estendia tão longe quanto a vista podia alcançar.

6 Contudo, o Senhor disse a Josué: "Não tenhas receio deles; amanhã por estas horas estarão todos mortos. Cortarás o tendão das pernas dos seus cavalos e queimarás os seus carros."

7 Josué e o seu exército apareceram subitamente nas fontes de Merom e caíram sobre eles. 8 O Senhor entregou todo aquele vasto conjunto de exércitos aos israelitas, que os perseguiram mesmo até à grande Sídon e até Misrefote-Maim, e também para o oriente até ao vale de Mizpá; de tal forma que nem um homem sequer escapou dessa batalha. 9 Josué e a sua gente fizeram como o Senhor lhes ordenara: quebraram os tendões das pernas aos cavalos e deitaram fogo aos carros de guerra.

10 No caminho de regresso, Josué tomou a localidade de Hazor e matou o seu rei. (Hazor tinha sido anteriormente a capital federal de todos aqueles territórios referidos). 11 A gente ali de Hazor foi morta e a cidade incendiada.

12 Depois atacou e destruiu as outras cidades daquela zona e os seus reis. Toda a gente foi morta pelas armas, segundo as instruções dadas muito tempo antes por Moisés, servo do Senhor. 13 Contudo, os israelitas não incendiaram nenhuma das cidades construídas sobre as colinas, com exceção, já referida, de Hazor. 14 O despojo e o gado das cidades devastadas foi tomado pelos israelitas para si próprios, mas mataram toda a gente. 15 Porque foi isso que o Senhor tinha ordenado anteriormente por intermédio de Moisés, seu servo; e Moisés transmitiu essa ordem expressa a Josué, o qual cumpriu o que lhe foi mandado, obedecendo escrupulosamente a todas as instruções dadas pelo Senhor a Moisés.

16 Foi assim que Josué conquistou aquela terra inteira; a zona das colinas, o Negueve, a terra de Gosen, toda a região das planícies costeiras, o Arabá e as terras altas e as planuras de Israel. 17 O território de Israel agora estendia-se do monte Halaque, perto de Seir, até Baal-Gad no vale do Líbano, próximo do monte Hermon. Josué fez desaparecer todos os reis dessas regiões; 18 depois de muito tempo a lutar contra eles para conseguir tudo isto. 19 Com nenhuma cidade estabeleceu qualquer tratado de paz, com exceção do caso já referido dos heveus de Gibeão; tudo o resto foi destruído. 20 Era mesmo o Senhor quem incitava aqueles reis inimigos a lutar contra os israelitas, em vez de pediram a paz; e acabavam por ser aniquilados. Assim se cumpriam as ordens do Senhor a Moisés.

21 Foi também durante esse período que Josué derrotou os gigantes todos; os descendentes de Anaque que viviam na zona das colinas, em Hebrom, Debir, Anabe e nas montanhas, que hoje pertencem a Judá e a Israel; matou-os e destruiu as cidades onde moravam. 22 Não foi deixado nenhum dos anaquins na terra de Israel, ainda que alguns tenham ficado em Gaza, Gate e Asdode.

23 Josué conquistou toda a terra, tal como o Senhor dissera a Moisés para fazer. E deu-a ao povo de Israel para que a possuísse e a dividisse entre as tribos. Até que por fim a terra descansou e não houve mais guerras.

1 And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, 2 And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Chinneroth, and in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the west, 3 And to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh. 4 And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many. 5 And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.*11.5 met…: Heb. assembled by appointment

6 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire. 7 So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them. 8 And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephoth-maim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining.*11.8 great Zidon: or, Zidonrabbah*11.8 Misrephoth-maim: or, Salt pits: Heb. Burnings of waters 9 And Joshua did unto them as the LORD bade him: he houghed their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.

10 And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms. 11 And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire.*11.11 any…: Heb. any breath 12 And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and he utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded. 13 But as for the cities that stood still in their strength, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; that did Joshua burn.*11.13 in their…: Heb. on their heap 14 And all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to breathe.

15 As the LORD commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses.*11.15 left…: Heb. removed nothing 16 So Joshua took all that land, the hills, and all the south country, and all the land of Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Israel, and the valley of the same; 17 Even from the mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir, even unto Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and smote them, and slew them.*11.17 the mount…: or, the smooth mountain 18 Joshua made war a long time with all those kings. 19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle. 20 For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.

21 And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities. 22 There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained. 23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.
