1 Sou um homem que viu as aflições que a vara do Senhor fez derramarem-se. 2 Levou-me até às trevas profundas, tirou-me toda a luz. 3 Voltou-se contra mim. Dia e noite a sua mão pesa sobre mim.

4 A minha pele está envelhecida e a minha carne mirrada; quebrou-me os ossos todos. 5 Construiu torres fortificadas contra mim; rodeou-me de angústia e de tormento. 6 Meteu-me dentro de lugares tenebrosos, semelhante aos que dormem há muito o seu último sono.

7 Emparedou-me; estou impossibilitado de fugir; agrilhoou-me com pesadas cadeias. 8 Ainda que grite e clame, não ouvirá os meus rogos! 9 Encarcerou-me num sítio rodeado de muros altos e espessos; encheu o meu caminho de emboscadas.

10 Espia-me como um urso prestes a atacar e como um leão pronto a saltar sobre a presa. 11 Fez-me extraviar do meu caminho; fez-me em pedaços e deixou-me a escorrer sangue, abandonado. 12 Retesou o arco e apontou certeiramente contra mim.

13 As suas setas entraram profundamente no meu coração. 14 O meu próprio povo ri-se de mim. Cantam o dia inteiro as suas canções dissolutas. 15 Encheu-me de amargura; deu-me a beber um copo cheio da mais profunda tristeza.

16 Fez-me comer cascalho, de tal forma que até os dentes se me partiram; fez-me rolar no meio da cinza e da sujidade. 17 Esqueci-me até do que significa prosperidade; perdi toda a tranquilidade na minha vida. 18 Até já me esqueci da alegria que essas coisas provocam. Só sei dizer: A minha força foi-se. Não espero nada de Deus!

19 Oh! Lembra-te da amargura e do sofrimento que lançaste sobre mim! 20 Nunca mais esquecerei estes horríveis anos. A minha alma passará a viver numa completa vergonha.

21 Mas há ainda um raio de esperança. 22 É que as misericórdias do Senhor não têm fim; foram as misericórdias do Senhor que impediram que fôssemos consumidos em absoluto; 23 grande é a sua fidelidade. A sua compaixão é sempre renovada em cada dia. 24 O Senhor é aquilo de que preciso para viver; é a minha única riqueza, por isso, espero nele.

25 O Senhor é bom para os que esperam nele, para os que o buscam. 26 É bom ter esperança e aguardar calmamente a salvação do Senhor. 27 É bom para um jovem estar sob disciplina.

28 Porque fá-lo sentar-se solitário, em silêncio, sob o controlo do Senhor, 29 inclinar o rosto para o chão, para o pó da terra; no fim, haverá esperança para ele. 30 Que aprenda a dar a outra face a quem o fere, que saiba enfrentar a afronta.

31 O Senhor não o abandonará para sempre. 32 Ainda que Deus o faça sofrer, mostrar-lhe-á a sua compaixão, de acordo com a sua grande misericórdia. 33 Porque não é do seu agrado afligir as pessoas, deixá-las tristes.

34 Quando são espezinhados os prisioneiros da terra, 35 e quando defraudam os direitos das pessoas, perante o Altíssimo, 36 e recusam fazer-lhes justiça, não é de admirar que o Senhor os queira castigar.

37 Quem poderá falar e fazer acontecer, se assim o Senhor não tiver orientado? 38 Ora, não é pela vontade do Altíssimo que procedem tanto as desgraças como as bênçãos? 39 Porque haveríamos então nós, meros seres humanos como somos, de murmurar e de nos lamentarmos, quando somos castigados por causa dos nossos pecados?

40 Examinemo-nos a nós próprios, antes, e arrependamo-nos; voltemos para o Senhor. 41 Levantemos os corações e as mãos para o Deus dos céus e digamos: 42 "Nós pecámos e rebelámo-nos contra ti e tu não nos perdoaste!

43 Cobriste-nos com a tua ira, Senhor, mataste-nos sem piedade. 44 Cobriste-nos com uma nuvem, de forma que as nossas orações não te alcançam. 45 Fizeste-nos como entulho e como lixo no meio das nações.

46 Todos os nossos inimigos falaram mal de nós. 47 Estamos cheios de terror porque fomos apanhados, desolados, destruídos."

48 Os meus olhos derramam torrentes de lágrimas de dia e de noite, por causa da destruição do meu povo.

49 Os meus olhos são fontes inesgotáveis de choro, sem cessar e sem descanso, 50 até que o Senhor olhe desde o céu e responda aos meus rogos! 51 O meu coração confrange-se perante aquilo que aconteceu às mulheres da minha cidade.

52 Os meus inimigos, a quem nunca fiz mal nenhum, enxotaram-me como se eu fosse uma ave de rapina. 53 Lançaram-me num poço e atiraram pedras sobre mim. 54 A água subiu acima da minha cabeça. Eu já pensava: É o fim!

55 Apelei para o teu nome, Senhor, desde o fundo desse poço, 56 e tu ouviste-me: "Não escondas os teus ouvidos ao meu choro e ao meu clamor!" 57 Sim, atentaste para os meus gritos desesperados e disseste-me: "Não temas!"

58 Ó Senhor, tu és o meu advogado! Defende a minha causa, porque redimiste a minha vida! 59 Viste, Senhor, o mal que me fizeram; sê o meu juiz e julga a minha causa. 60 Observaste as conspirações que os meus inimigos arquitetaram contra mim.

61 Ouviste os nomes afrontosos que me chamaram, Senhor, e tudo o que dizem a meu respeito; 62 as suas acusações e o seu murmurar contra mim o tempo todo. 63 Observa-os quando se assentam e quando se levantam; eu sou o objeto da zombaria das suas canções.

64 Ó Senhor, vinga todo o mal que eles têm feito! 65 Que os seus corações se encham de desespero perante a tua maldição! 66 Vai atrás deles, perseguindo-os na tua ira e varre-os da Terra, de sob os céus do Senhor!

22 It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. 24 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. 25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. 26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD. 27 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. 28 He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him. 29 He putteth his mouth in the dust; if so be there may be hope. 30 He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him: he is filled full with reproach. 31 For the Lord will not cast off for ever: 32 But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies. 33 For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.*3.33 willingly: Heb. from his heart 34 To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth, 35 To turn aside the right of a man before the face of the most High,*3.35 the most High: or, a superior 36 To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approveth not.*3.36 approveth not: or, seeth not

37 Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not? 38 Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good? 39 Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?*3.39 complain: or, murmur 40 Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD. 41 Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.

42 We have transgressed and have rebelled: thou hast not pardoned. 43 Thou hast covered with anger, and persecuted us: thou hast slain, thou hast not pitied. 44 Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through. 45 Thou hast made us as the offscouring and refuse in the midst of the people. 46 All our enemies have opened their mouths against us. 47 Fear and a snare is come upon us, desolation and destruction. 48 Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people. 49 Mine eye trickleth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission, 50 Till the LORD look down, and behold from heaven. 51 Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city.*3.51 mine heart: Heb. my soul*3.51 because…: or, more than all 52 Mine enemies chased me sore, like a bird, without cause. 53 They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone upon me. 54 Waters flowed over mine head; then I said, I am cut off.

55 I called upon thy name, O LORD, out of the low dungeon. 56 Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry. 57 Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not. 58 O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life. 59 O LORD, thou hast seen my wrong: judge thou my cause. 60 Thou hast seen all their vengeance and all their imaginations against me. 61 Thou hast heard their reproach, O LORD, and all their imaginations against me; 62 The lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day. 63 Behold their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their musick.

64 Render unto them a recompence, O LORD, according to the work of their hands. 65 Give them sorrow of heart, thy curse unto them.*3.65 sorrow…: or, obstinacy of heart 66 Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of the LORD.
