Salmo de David. Para o diretor do coro.

1 Ó Deus, tu que és o objeto do meu louvor,

não permaneças calado!

2 Os perversos e mentirosos caluniam-me;

dizem mentiras a meu respeito.

3 Eles não têm razão para me odiar

e estar cerradamente contra mim, como fazem.

4 Em paga pelo meu amor são meus inimigos;

quanto a mim, só me resta fazer-te oração!

5 Pagam-me o bem com o mal,

o amor com o ódio.

6 Nomeiem um juiz corrupto

e que haja um acusador contra ele à sua direita!

7 Seja julgado e condenado!

Que a sentença seja infalivelmente a sua condenação!

Que até as suas orações sejam consideradas um pecado!

8 Que os dias da sua vida sejam poucos e breves

e que venha outro tirar-lhe o trabalho!

9 Que os seus filhos fiquem órfãos

e a sua mulher viúva!

10 Que sejam expulsos das ruínas do seu lar

e os seus descendentes obrigados a mendigar o pão,

por terras distantes!

11 Que os credores lancem mão de tudo o que era dele

e que estranhos fiquem com tudo o que ganhou!

12 Que ninguém tenha misericórdia dele

nem dó dos seus órfãos!

13 Que a sua posteridade venha a desaparecer

e que ninguém se lembre dele, passada uma geração!

14 Que o Senhor se lembre da maldade dos seus pais

e não os tenha por inocentes!

15 Que o Senhor tenha esses pecados sempre presentes;

que ninguém se lembre que existiram esses homens!

16 Pois recusou ser bondoso para com o seu próximo;

chegou ao ponto de perseguir os que estavam aflitos,

os necessitados e os que viviam com o coração angustiado;

perseguiu-os até os liquidar!

17 Visto que teve alegria na maldição dos outros,

venha agora a maldição sobre ele!

Se nunca quis a tua bênção,

por que razão haveria agora de ser abençoado por ti?

18 A maldição era algo que lhe era tão habitual,

como a própria roupa que se veste

ou a água que normalmente se bebe

ou como óleo para os ossos.

19 Que essas mesmas maldições que distribuiu

se voltem agora contra ele!

Que se lhes peguem como a roupa ao corpo!

Que o apertem como o cinto que tem à cintura!

20 Seja esse o castigo do Senhor aos meus inimigos,

aos que dizem toda a espécie de mentiras a meu respeito

e querem a destruição da minha alma.

21 Mas tu, Senhor, meu Deus, age em meu favor,

para que o teu nome seja honrado!

Livra-me, porque sei que é grande a tua bondade!

22 Estou aflito e necessitado;

o meu coração vai desfalecendo.

23 Vou resvalando pela encosta da vida,

em direção à sombra da morte;

em breve a vida me sacudirá como se sacode um gafanhoto.

24 Os meus joelhos estão esfraquecidos de tanto jejuar;

sou só pele e osso!

25 Sou já, para toda a gente,

como que a própria imagem do fracasso;

olham para mim e abanam a cabeça.

26 Ajuda-me, Senhor, meu Deus!

Salva-me, porque és cheio de bondade!

27 Para que toda a gente constate

que intervéns na minha vida.

28 Eles podem amaldiçoar, é certo,

mas que importa se és tu quem me abençoará?

Bem podem levantar-se para me destruir;

mas que eles sejam envergonhados,

e que o teu servo se alegre!

29 Que fracassem em tudo o que fizerem!

Que a desgraça se lhes cole à vida como a roupa ao corpo!

30 Quero agradecer ao Senhor com todas as forças;

contarei a toda a gente o que fez por mim.

31 Pois ele permanece à direita do pobre,

para o livrar dos que pretendem destruir a sua alma.

1 Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise;

2 For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened against me: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue.*109.2 of the deceitful: Heb. of deceit*109.2 are opened: Heb. have opened themselves

3 They compassed me about also with words of hatred; and fought against me without a cause.

4 For my love they are my adversaries: but I give myself unto prayer.

5 And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.

6 Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand.*109.6 Satan: or, an adversary

7 When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin.*109.7 be condemned: Heb. go out guilty, or, wicked

8 Let his days be few; and let another take his office.*109.8 office: or, charge

9 Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.

10 Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.

11 Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour.

12 Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children.

13 Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.

14 Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.

15 Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

16 Because that he remembered not to shew mercy, but persecuted the poor and needy man, that he might even slay the broken in heart.

17 As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him.

18 As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones.*109.18 into his bowels: Heb. within him

19 Let it be unto him as the garment which covereth him, and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually.

20 Let this be the reward of mine adversaries from the LORD, and of them that speak evil against my soul.

21 But do thou for me, O GOD the Lord, for thy name’s sake: because thy mercy is good, deliver thou me.

22 For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.

23 I am gone like the shadow when it declineth: I am tossed up and down as the locust.

24 My knees are weak through fasting; and my flesh faileth of fatness.

25 I became also a reproach unto them: when they looked upon me they shaked their heads.

26 Help me, O LORD my God: O save me according to thy mercy:

27 That they may know that this is thy hand; that thou, LORD, hast done it.

28 Let them curse, but bless thou: when they arise, let them be ashamed; but let thy servant rejoice.

29 Let mine adversaries be clothed with shame, and let them cover themselves with their own confusion, as with a mantle.

30 I will greatly praise the LORD with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the multitude.

31 For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul.*109.31 those…: Heb. the judges of
