1 Disse para mim mesmo:

"Vou estar atento quando abrir a minha boca,

principalmente quando estiver rodeado de ímpios."

2 Mas enquanto estive em silêncio,

nada dizendo, mesmo de bem,

cresceu o tumulto dentro de mim até rebentar.

3 Quanto mais refletia,

mais cresciam as labaredas da agitação em mim.

Até que falei e supliquei a Deus:

4 "Senhor, ajuda-me a compreender

como é curto o meu tempo aqui na Terra!

Ajuda-me a compreender a minha fragilidade!

5 Aos teus olhos, a minha vida pode medir-se em palmos;

o tempo da minha existência é como um sopro para ti. (Pausa)

6 Na verdade, o ser humano,

por mais bem estabelecido que esteja na vida,

é frágil como um sopro, é como uma sombra.

Em vão corre atarefado, de um lado para o outro,

e amontoa fortunas, para serem gastas por outros.

7 Assim, Senhor, em quem posso eu esperar?

Tu és a minha única esperança.

8 Livra-me de ser subjugado pelos meus pecados,

porque até os loucos me desprezariam.

9 Estou sem fala diante de ti.

Não direi uma palavra só de queixa,

porque o meu castigo vem de ti.

10 Não me atormentes mais,

pois estou a desfalecer sob o golpe da tua mão.

11 Quando castigas um homem pelo seu pecado,

logo fica destruído;

fica como roupa bonita estragada pela traça.

Sim, o homem vale tão pouco como um simples sopro. (Pausa)

12 Ouve, Senhor, a minha oração

e inclina os teus ouvidos ao meu apelo.

Não fiques parado perante as minhas lágrimas!

Sou para ti como um simples estranho;

sou como um viajante passando pela Terra,

como todos os meus antepassados.

13 Poupa-me, Senhor!

Ajuda-me a recuperar forças,

antes que venha a morte e eu deixe de existir."
