1,2 Que todos os povos do mundo ouçam isto!

Que todos os moradores da Terra,

grandes e pequenos, ricos e pobres,

prestem atenção às minhas palavras!

3 Elas serão ditas com sabedoria;

serão o fruto de uma meditação feita com inteligência.

4 Inclinarei os meus ouvidos ao ensino dum provérbio

e explicarei o seu sentido ao som da lira.

5 Não devo ter medo, quando chegam os dias de aflição,

mesmo rodeado da maldade dos que me querem mal.

6 Aqueles que confiam nas suas riquezas

e se gabam de tudo quanto possuem,

7 nenhum deles, de modo algum,

pode resgatar o seu próximo do castigo do pecado.

8 Uma alma é algo de valor tão elevado

que as fortunas da Terra inteira, juntas,

9 não seriam suficientes para comprar a vida eterna

e para livrar da morte.

10 Pois todos podem ver que os sábios também morrem,

como morrem os loucos e os insensatos,

e as suas riquezas serão para outros.

11 Dão às propriedades que possuem os seus próprios nomes,

porque pensam para si mesmos,

que serão suas e dos seus descendentes para sempre,

e que nunca deixarão de morar nelas.

12 Mas essas pessoas, apesar de toda a sua vaidade,

terão de morrer, como qualquer animal!

13 Tal é o destino dos que confiam em si mesmos

e dos que o seguem. (Pausa)

14 O mundo dos mortos leva toda a humanidade

como um grande rebanho do qual se alimenta.

Ao romper do dia, os retos os dominarão,

pois a sua beleza acabará quando morrerem,

visto que se encontram longe das suas moradas.

15 Quanto a mim, Deus salvará a minha alma do mundo dos mortos;

certamente me receberá. (Pausa)

16 Portanto, não temas quando homens sem Deus enriquecem

e alcançam grande prosperidade.

17 Porque quando morrem não levam nada consigo;

o seu bem-estar não os acompanhará.

18 Ainda que toda a sua vida se tenham tido por felizes,

e outros os aplaudam por todo o bem

que souberem fazer a si mesmos,

19 contudo, terão o fim que teve toda a gente antes deles,

a escuridão eterna.

20 Porque o ser humano, mesmo com toda a sua prosperidade, é destituído de entendimento;

terá de morrer como qualquer animal.

3 My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.

4 I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.

5 Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?

6 They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;

7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:

8 (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)

9 That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.

10 For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.

11 Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.*49.11 all…: Heb. generation and generation

12 Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.
