Cântico didático de Asafe.

1 Meu povo, presta atenção ao meu ensino;

abre os ouvidos às palavras da minha boca.

2 Falarei por parábolas;

explicarei mistérios desde a antiguidade.

3 Os problemas que os nossos pais enfrentaram

e que servem para nos ensinar a nós;

coisas que ouvimos e sabemos,

que os nossos pais nos contaram.

4 Também não deixaremos de contar

e de mostrar às gerações futuras

as coisas pelas quais o Senhor deve ser louvado,

o seu poder e todos os seus milagres.

5 Deus deu o seu testemunho a Jacob,

e estabeleceu a sua Lei em Israel;

mandou que os nossos pais

os dessem a conhecer aos seus filhos.

6 Para que as gerações futuras os conhecessem;

foi assim que passaram de geração em geração.

7 Pois era necessário que confiassem em Deus;

não esquecessem as suas obras maravilhosas

e sempre guardassem os seus mandamentos.

8 Que não fossem como os seus antepassados,

gente teimosa e rebelde,

que não soube entregar o seu coração a Deus

nem submeter-lhe fielmente o seu espírito.

9 O povo de Efraim, completamente armado,

virou as costas à batalha, tomado de medo.

10 Não se manteve fiel à aliança de Deus

e recusou andar na sua Lei.

11 Esqueceu-se das obras

e dos milagres que fizera na sua frente.

12 E também na frente dos seus pais,

lá no Egito e em Zoã.

13 Dividiu o mar em dois e fê-los passar;

fez com que as águas se amontoassem e atravessaram.

14 De dia guiava-os com uma nuvem branca

e de noite com um clarão de fogo.

15 Fez as rochas abrirem-se para lhes dar água

que correu com a abundância de um rio.

16 Fez com que fontes saíssem das rochas,

donde brotaram caudais de água.

17 Mesmo assim, continuaram a pecar;

não tiveram medo de, ali no deserto,

desafiar o Altíssimo.

18 Queixaram-se, exigindo que Deus lhes desse outra comida,

pois apetecia-lhes carne.

19 Revoltavam-se, dizendo: "Será Deus capaz

de servir-nos à mesa no deserto?

20 É verdade que ele bateu na rocha e dela saiu água;

tanta que formava um rio!

Mas poderá ele dar-nos também pão,

e preparar carne verdadeira para o seu povo?"

21 Ouvindo isto, acendeu-se a ira do Senhor,

que lançou fogo

contra Jacob e também se indignou contra Israel.

22 Pois não creram em Deus,

nem na sua capacidade para os salvar.

23 Isto apesar do Senhor já ter ordenado

que se abrissem as janelas do céu.

24 Fez chover sobre eles o maná,

que era o pão do céu, para se alimentarem.

25 Assim puderam comer a comida dos anjos,

tanta quanto quiseram, até fartar!

26 Contudo, Deus fez que soprasse com força

um vento de oriente e também do sul.

27 Este trouxe sobre eles bandos de aves

que mais pareciam nuvens de pó ou de areia,

como quando se levanta o vento na praia.

28 As aves vieram parar-lhes mesmo às mãos,

ali onde estavam, no meio das suas tendas.

29 E o povo comeu até se fartar;

tiveram o que desejavam.

30 Contudo, mal tinham satisfeito o seu apetite,

ainda tinham aquela comida na boca.

31 A ira de Deus caiu sobre eles

e matou os mais fortes, a elite de Israel!

32 Pois nem mesmo assim deixaram de pecar;

continuaram sem acreditar,

sem ligar aos milagres do Senhor.

33 Por isso, reduziu as suas vidas a dias sem sentido,

a anos cheios de angústia.

34 Sempre que Deus os deixava sentir o terror da morte,

voltavam-se para ele e buscavam-no com ansiedade.

35 Lembravam-se que Deus era como um rochedo firme

e que o Deus altíssimo era o seu Redentor.

36 No entanto, o culto que lhe prestavam era só de boca;

no fundo mentiam-lhe!

37 Os seus corações não eram retos para com Deus;

não foram fiéis à sua aliança.

38 Mas Deus, que é extremamente misericordioso,

perdoou-lhes a sua maldade e não os destruiu;

frequentemente suspendeu o rigor da sua justiça e indignação.

39 Porque se lembrava que eram meros humanos;

mortais que desaparecem num momento,

como um vento que sopra e não volta.

40 Oh! Quantas vezes ofenderam a Deus no deserto

e na solidão o provocaram!

41 Quantas vezes puseram Deus à prova;

irritaram constantemente o Santo de Israel.

42 Esqueceram-se da força que tem a sua mão;

de tudo o que já tinha feito para livrá-los dos adversários.

43 Esqueceram-se dos milagres que fez no Egito,

e das maravilhas que fez acontecer nos campos de Zoã.

44 Como transformou em sangue as águas dos rios,

de modo que ninguém podia matar a sede.

45 Como mandou grandes enxames de moscas,

que cobriram a terra,

e também rãs que encheram todo o Egito!

46 As lagartas comeram-lhes as plantas

e os gafanhotos levaram o produto de todo o seu trabalho.

47 Destruiu-lhes as vinhas e as figueiras bravas com a saraiva.

48 Também o gado foi morto pelo granizo

e os rebanhos desvastados pelos raios.

49 Soltou sobre eles a intensidade

de toda a sua severidade e indignação;

mandou-lhes angústias.

50 Deu livre curso à sua cólera, não lhes poupou a vida;

deixou-os entregues às doenças e às pestes.

51 Tirou a vida ao filho mais velho das famílias egípcias,

aqueles que constituíam os descendentes de Cam.

52 Contudo, conduziu o seu povo através do deserto,

como um pastor que leva o rebanho.

53 Guiou-os com segurança,

para não terem de recear coisa alguma;

aos adversários do seu povo, porém, o mar os cobriu.

54 Conduziu-os até à entrada daquela terra santa,

que lhes tinha destinado;

até ao monte que, com o seu poder, lhes tinha reservado.

55 Expulsou as nações que ocupavam essa terra

e repartiu-a por cada uma das tribos de Israel.

56 Contudo, continuaram a revoltar-se,

e puseram à prova o Deus altíssimo;

recusaram obedecer aos seus mandamentos.

57 Desviaram-se de Deus e foram-lhe infiéis

e foram desobedientes como os seus pais;

portaram-se como um arco cuja flecha se vira contra o atirador.

58 Fizeram suscitar a cólera de Deus,

levantando altares a outros deuses

e fazendo imagens para adorarem.

59 Ao ouvir isto Deus ficou altamente indignado

e rejeitou Israel.

60 Por isso, abandonou a sua morada em Silo,

onde habitara no meio dos homens.

61 Permitiu que a sua arca,

que representava a sua força e esplendor, fosse capturada pelo inimigo.

62 Deixou que o seu povo fosse chacinado,

porque estava intensamente irado.

63 Os seus jovens foram mortos pelo fogo

e as raparigas calaram as canções de noivado,

antes de atingirem a idade do casamento.

64 Os sacerdotes foram assassinados

e as suas viúvas não puderam chorá-los.

65 Até que o Senhor se levantou,

como se despertasse dum sono,

ou como um guerreiro que recobra os sentidos,

depois de uma noite de festa.

66 Dispersou os seus inimigos,

que se puseram em fuga,

entregues a um desprezo permanente.

67 Depois o Senhor entendeu por bem

não considerar a família de José, a tribo de Efraim.

68 Em seu lugar escolheu a tribo de Judá

e o monte Sião que ele amava.

69 Ali construiu um célebre templo,

como a Terra que estabeleceu para sempre.

70 Também escolheu David para o servir,

quando este era pastor de ovelhas.

71 David deixou as ovelhas e os cordeirinhos,

para ser o pastor de Jacob, o povo de Deus,

e de Israel, a sua propriedade.

72 Ele conduziu esse rebanho do Senhor,

com integridade de coração e mãos hábeis.

2 I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:

3 Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.

4 We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.

5 For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:

6 That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

7 That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:

8 And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.*78.8 that…: Heb. that prepared not their heart

9 The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.*78.9 carrying: Heb. throwing forth

10 They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;

11 And forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them.

12 Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

13 He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; and he made the waters to stand as an heap.

14 In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire.

15 He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths.

16 He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.

17 And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most High in the wilderness.

18 And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.

19 Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?*78.19 furnish: Heb. order

20 Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?

21 Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel;

22 Because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation:

23 Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,

24 And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven.

25 Man did eat angels’ food: he sent them meat to the full.*78.25 Man…: or, Every one did eat the bread of the mighty

26 He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven: and by his power he brought in the south wind.*78.26 to blow: Heb. to go

27 He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:*78.27 feathered…: Heb. fowl of wing

28 And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations.

29 So they did eat, and were well filled: for he gave them their own desire;

30 They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,

31 The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.*78.31 smote…: Heb. made to bow*78.31 chosen…: or, young men

32 For all this they sinned still, and believed not for his wondrous works.

33 Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.

34 When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God.

35 And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.

36 Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.

37 For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.

38 But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.

39 For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.

40 How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert!*78.40 provoke: or, rebel against

41 Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel.

42 They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy.*78.42 from…: or, from affliction

43 How he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan:*78.43 wrought: Heb. set

44 And had turned their rivers into blood; and their floods, that they could not drink.

45 He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.

46 He gave also their increase unto the caterpiller, and their labour unto the locust.

47 He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycomore trees with frost.*78.47 destroyed: Heb. killed*78.47 frost: or, great hailstones

48 He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.*78.48 gave…: Heb. shut up*78.48 hot…: or, lightnings

49 He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them.

50 He made a way to his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence;*78.50 He made…: Heb. He weighed a path*78.50 life…: or, beasts to the murrain

51 And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham:

52 But made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

53 And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.*78.53 overwhelmed: Heb. covered

54 And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.

55 He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.

56 Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:

57 But turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitful bow.

58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images.

59 When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:

60 So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;

61 And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy’s hand.

62 He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.

63 The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.*78.63 given…: Heb. praised

64 Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.

65 Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.

66 And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.

67 Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:

68 But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.

69 And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever.*78.69 established: Heb. founded

70 He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:

71 From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.*78.71 following: Heb. after

72 So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.
