1 Portanto, em resumo, o que temos estado a dizer é que temos um supremo sacerdote, Cristo, que está no céu, sentado à direita do trono de Deus majestoso2 Aí ele exerce as suas funções no verdadeiro templo celestial, que é um santuário construído pelo Senhor mesmo e não pelos homens.3 E visto que todo o supremo sacerdote é nomeado para apresentar a Deus ofertas e sacrifícios, Cristo fez também uma oferta.4 E o certo é que, aqui na Terra, ele não podia ter sido sacerdote, pois já havia outros sacerdotes para fazer sacrifícios, de acordo com a lei.5 E eles servem num lugar de adoração que é somente uma cópia, uma sombra, do verdadeiro santuário no céu. Porque quando Moisés se preparava para construir o tabernáculo, o Senhor o avisou de que devia seguir exactamente o modelo que lhe tinha sido mostrado no Monte Sinai6 Mas a Cristo foi confiado um serviço muito mais importante, até porque o novo acordo para o qual serviu de medianeiro entre Deus e os homens se fundamenta em promessas muito mais excelentes.7 Evidentemente que se a primeira aliança tivesse sido perfeita não teria havido razão para ser substituída por outro acordo8 Mas Deus chamou atenção da imperfeição na velha aliança quando disse:Há-de vir o tempo em que farei um novo pactocom o povo de Israel e com o povo de Judá sse acordo não será como o antigo que eu estabelecicom os seus pais, quando os tomei pela mão a fim de os fazer sair da terra do Egipto. Ora, como eles não cumpriram a sua obrigação nesse acordo, eu por minha parte virei-lhes as costas, diz o Senhor ontudo, este é o pacto que depois hei-de fazer com o povo de Israel, diz o Senhor screverei as minhas leis nos seus entendimentos,elas estarão gravadas nos seus corações. Eu serei o seu Deus, e eles serão o meu próprio povo então ninguém terá de dizer ao seu vizinho, nem ao seu irmão: 'Precisas de conhecer Deus!' - porque todos, grandes e pequenos, já me conhecerão nesse tempo. Terei misericórdia deles e perdoarei as suas injustiças; não me lembrarei mais dos seus pecados.13 Portanto se Deus fala de um novo pacto é porque considera o anterior caducado. E, se assim é, envelheceu, está posto de lado.

1 Now in the things which we are saying the chief point [is this]: We have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,2 a minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, not man.3 For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices: therefore it is necessary that this [high priest] also have somewhat to offer.4 Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, seeing there are those who offer the gifts according to the law;5 who serve [that which is] a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, even as Moses is warned [of God] when he is about to make the tabernacle: for, See, he says, that you make all things according to the pattern that was shown to you in the mount.6 But now he has obtained a more excellent ministry, by so much as he is also the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted on better promises.7 For if that first [covenant] had been faultless, then would no place have been sought for a second.8 For finding fault with them, he says, Look, the days come, says the Lord, That I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah;9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers In the day that I took them by the hand to lead them forth out of the land of Egypt; For they did not continue in my covenant, And I did not regard them, says the Lord.10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel After those days, says the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, And on their heart also I will write them: And I will be to them a God, And they will be to me a people:11 And they will not teach every man his fellow-citizen, And every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: For all will know me, From the least to the greatest of them.12 For I will be merciful to their iniquities, And their sins I will remember no more.13 In that he says, New, he has made the first obsolete. But that which is becoming obsolete and growing old is near to vanishing away.
