1 E agora, irmãos, voltando ao assunto do regresso do nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo e da nossa reunião com ele, vos rogamos que não se deixem assim tão facilmente influenciar no vosso entendimento e até perturbarem-se, quer por pretensas revelações espirituais, quer por mensagens ou por cartas que vos digam terem sido mandadas por nós, e que têm como objectivo levar-vos a acreditarem que esse dia de Cristo já terá acontecido.3 Que ninguém de forma alguma vos engane; pois isso não se dará sem que antes venha uma grande revolta contra Deus e se revele aquele homem que encarnará em si mesmo o pecado, que será o filho da perdição.4 Ele se oporá e se levantará contra tudo o que fizer referência a Deus e ao seu culto. E até pretenderá mesmo tomar o lugar de Deus no próprio templo de Deus, fazendo-se passar por Deus mesmo.5 Vocês lembram-se de que já vos tinha falado de tudo isto quando ainda me encontrava convosco6 Vocês também sabem o que de momento impede esse homem maligno de aparecer7 É verdade que essa força de injustiça já vai actuando como que escondidamente. Mas há um que o detém até que seja retirado.8 Só nessa altura se revelará então aquele ser mau, a quem o Senhor virá a desfazer pelo sopro da sua boca, e que será destruído pelo esplendor com que Cristo aparecerá.9 Esse homem de pecado actuará segundo o poder de Satanás, através de manifestações de força, e de milagres e prodígios, com o fim de darem apoio às suas mentiras.10 Ele usará de todo o poder da maldade para enganar aqueles que estão no caminho da perdição, porque recusam acreditar na verdade que os conduziria à salvação.11 Por isso Deus permitirá que neles actue uma influência de engano, que os levará a crer na mentira.12 E serão julgados assim todos os que rejeitaram a verdade e ficaram satisfeitos com a maldade.13 Mas devemos sem cessar agradecer a Deus por vós, queridos irmãos, a quem o Senhor ama, por vos ter escolhido, desde os princípios, para obterem a salvação, purificando-vos da acção do pecado, pelo Espírito Santo, e pela vossa fé na verdade.14 Ele chamou-vos à salvação por intermédio do evangelho que levámos ao vosso conhecimento, e para que participassem da glória de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo.15 Sendo assim, irmãos, permaneçam firmes e bem apegados aos ensinamentos que desde sempre vos temos dado, seja de viva voz, seja por carta.16 Que o Senhor Jesus Cristo e o nosso Deus e Pai que nos amou e, sem que o tenhamos merecido, nos consola, para sempre, e nos enche duma grande esperança, encoraje os vossos corações, e renove as vossas forças em tudo o que fizerem, seja por palavras, seja por actos.

1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering to him.2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.5 Remember ye not, that when I was yet with you, I told you these things?6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now restraineth will restrain, until he be taken out of the way.8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the spirit of his mouth, and will destroy with the brightness of his coming:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan, with all power, and signs, and lying wonders,10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.11 And for this cause God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:12 That they all may be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.13 But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren, beloved by the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation, through sanctification of the Spirit, and belief of the truth:14 To which he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, who hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,17 Comfort your hearts, and establish you in every good word and work.
