1 De João, o ancião, ao querido Gaio, que eu amo verdadeiramente.2 Querido amigo, a minha oração é para que tudo te corra bem, e que tenhas tanta saúde quanto ao corpo como tens quanto à tua alma.3 Pois tive muita alegria quando os irmãos que aí estiveram me vieram falar acerca da tua fidelidade e de como te conduzes conforme a verdade do evangelho. Não poderia ter maior alegria do que a de saber que os meus filhos vivem de acordo com a verdade.5 Meu querido amigo, é uma boa obra que fazes para Deus quando recebes carinhosamente os irmãos que viajam e que por aí passam, mesmo aqueles que tu não conheces.6 Eles deram aqui, na presença da igreja, testemunho da tua generosidade. Fazes bem em continuar a prover ao prosseguimento das suas viagens de uma forma que dignifica Deus.7 Porque é para anunciar o nome do Senhor que eles viajam, sem nada receber daqueles que não são cristãos.8 Devemos, portanto, nós próprios tomá-los a nosso cargo para que sejamos cooperantes na expansão da verdade.9 Escrevi sobre certos assuntos à igreja, mas Diótrefes, que tudo faz para ter o primeiro lugar entre os cristãos ali, recusa aceitar as nossas directivas.10 Pelo que, quando aí for, hei-de lembrar-lhe todo o mal que tem feito e toda a linguagem imprópria que profere contra mim. E não contente com isto, recusa receber os missionários que chegam de viagem, indo ao ponto de impedir aqueles que querem recebê-los, excluindo-os da igreja.11 Querido amigo, não imites o mal mas o bem. Quem faz o bem é de Deus; mas quem continua praticando o que é mau não conhece Deus.12 Quanto a Demétrio, toda a gente testemunha muito favoravelmente a seu respeito; e a própria verdade o apoia. Nós próprios também dizemos o mesmo, e sabes bem que falamos verdade.13 Teria muito mais a dizer, mas não quero fazê-lo por carta, pois espero ver-te em breve e então falaremos pessoalmente.

1 The elder to the well-beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth.2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.3 For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.5 Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;6 Who have borne testimony of thy charity before the church: whom if thou shalt bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou wilt do well:7 Because for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing from the Gentiles.8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we may be fellow-helpers to the truth.9 I wrote to the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the pre-eminence among them, receiveth us not.10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content with that, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good.
