1 Putting away, therefore, all vice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envyings and all detractions,2 As new-born babes, for the pure milk that is for the mind, eagerly crave, that, thereby, ye may grow unto salvation:3 If ye have tasted for yourselves that, gracious, is the Lord,4 Unto whom coming near, as unto a living stoneby men, indeed, rejected, but, with God, chosen, held in honour,5 Yourselves also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, for a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices, well-pleasing unto God through Jesus Christ;6 Inasmuch as it is contained in scriptureLo! I lay in Zion an outmost corner stone, chosen, held in honour, and, he that resteth faith thereupon, shall not be put to shame.7 Unto you, then, is the honour who believe; but, unto such as disbelieve, The stone which the builders rejected,The same, hath become head of the corner,8 And a stone to strike against, and a rock to stumble over: Who stumble because, unto the word, they do not yield,unto which also they have been appointed;9 But, ye, are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for a peculiar treasure, that, the excellences, ye may tell forth, of him who, out of darkness, hath called you into his marvellous light:10 Who, at one time, were a No-people, but, now, are a people of God,who had not been enjoying mercy, but, now, have received mercy.11 Beloved! I exhort you, as sojourners and pilgrims, to abstain from fleshly covetings, such as take the field against the soul;12 Having, your behaviour among the nations, honourable,in order that, wherein they speak against you as evil-doers, they may, owing to the honourable works they are permitted to behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.13 Submit yourselves unto every human creation, for the Lords sake,whether unto a king, as one that protecteth,14 Or unto governors, as, through him, sentfor vengeance on evil-doers, but praise to such as do good;15 Because, so, is the will of God,by doing good, to be putting to silence, the ignorance of heedless men:16 As free, yet, not as a cloak of vice, holding your freedom, but, as Gods servants.17 Unto all men, give honour, unto the brotherhood, shew love, unto God, give reverence, the king, hold in honour.18 Ye domestics, submitting yourselves, in all reverence, unto your masters,not only unto the good and considerate, but also unto the perverse;19 For, this, is thankworthy,If, for the sake of conscience towards God, one beareth griefs, suffering wrongfully,20 For what sort of honour is itif, committing sin, and being buffeted, ye endure it? But, if, doing good, and suffering, ye endure it, this, is thankworthy with God.21 For, hereunto, have ye been called; because, Christ also, suffered in your behalf, unto you, leaving behind a pattern, that ye might follow in his steps:22 Who did not, a sin, commit, neither was deceit found in his mouth,23 Who, being reviled, was not reviling again, suffering, he was not threatening, but was making surrender unto him that judgeth righteously,24 Who, our sins, himself, bare up, in his body, unto the tree, in order that we, from our sins getting away, in righteousness, might live,by whose stripes, ye have been healed;25 For ye were as sheep going astray, but have now turned back unto the shepherd and overseer of your souls.

1 Deixando, pois, toda malícia, e todo engano, e fingimentos, e invejas, e todas as murmurações, 2 desejai afetuosamente, como meninos novamente nascidos, o leite racional, não falsificado, para que, por ele, vades crescendo, 3 se é que já provastes que o Senhor é benigno. 4 E, chegando-vos para ele, a pedra viva, reprovada, na verdade, pelos homens, mas para com Deus eleita e preciosa, 5 vós também, como pedras vivas, sois edificados casa espiritual e sacerdócio santo, para oferecerdes sacrifícios espirituais, agradáveis a Deus, por Jesus Cristo. 6 Pelo que também na Escritura se contém: Eis que ponho em Sião a pedra principal da esquina, eleita e preciosa; e quem nela crer não será confundido. 7 E assim para vós, os que credes, é preciosa, mas, para os rebeldes, a pedra que os edificadores reprovaram, essa foi a principal da esquina; 8 e uma pedra de tropeço e rocha de escândalo, para aqueles que tropeçam na palavra, sendo desobedientes; para o que também foram destinados.

9 Mas vós sois a geração eleita, o sacerdócio real, a nação santa, o povo adquirido, para que anuncieis as virtudes daquele que vos chamou das trevas para a sua maravilhosa luz; 10 vós que, em outro tempo, não éreis povo, mas, agora, sois povo de Deus; que não tínheis alcançado misericórdia, mas, agora, alcançastes misericórdia.

11 Amados, peço-vos, como a peregrinos e forasteiros, que vos abstenhais das concupiscências carnais, que combatem contra a alma, 12 tendo o vosso viver honesto entre os gentios, para que, naquilo em que falam mal de vós, como de malfeitores, glorifiquem a Deus no Dia da visitação, pelas boas obras que em vós observem. 13 Sujeitai-vos, pois, a toda ordenação humana por amor do Senhor; quer ao rei, como superior; 14 quer aos governadores, como por ele enviados para castigo dos malfeitores e para louvor dos que fazem o bem. 15 Porque assim é a vontade de Deus, que, fazendo o bem, tapeis a boca à ignorância dos homens loucos; 16 como livres e não tendo a liberdade por cobertura da malícia, mas como servos de Deus. 17 Honrai a todos. Amai a fraternidade. Temei a Deus. Honrai o rei.

18 Vós, servos, sujeitai-vos com todo o temor ao senhor, não somente ao bom e humano, mas também ao mau; 19 porque é coisa agradável que alguém, por causa da consciência para com Deus, sofra agravos, padecendo injustamente. 20 Porque que glória será essa, se, pecando, sois esbofeteados e sofreis? Mas, se fazendo o bem, sois afligidos e o sofreis, isso é agradável a Deus. 21 Porque para isto sois chamados, pois também Cristo padeceu por nós, deixando-nos o exemplo, para que sigais as suas pisadas, 22 o qual não cometeu pecado, nem na sua boca se achou engano, 23 o qual, quando o injuriavam, não injuriava e, quando padecia, não ameaçava, mas entregava-se àquele que julga justamente, 24 levando ele mesmo em seu corpo os nossos pecados sobre o madeiro, para que, mortos para os pecados, pudéssemos viver para a justiça; e pelas suas feridas fostes sarados. 25 Porque éreis como ovelhas desgarradas; mas, agora, tendes voltado ao Pastor e Bispo da vossa alma.
