1 And again was the anger of Yahweh kindled against Israel,so that he suffered David to be moved against them, saying, Go, count Israel and Judah.2 The king, therefore, said unto Joab, captain of the force, who was with himGo to and fro, I pray thee, throughout all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even unto Beer -sheba, and number ye the people,so shall I know the sum of the people.3 Then said Joab unto the kingYea, Yahweh thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, a hundredfold, and the eyes of my lord the king, to see it,but, my lord the king, wherefore doth he find pleasure in this thing?4 Notwithstanding, the word of the king prevailed against Joab, and over the captains of the force,so Joab went forth, with the captains of the force, before the king, to number the peopleIsrael.5 And they passed over the Jordan,and encamped in Aroer, on the right side of the city, that is in the midst of the ravine of Gad, even towards Jazer.6 Thus came they to Gilead, and unto the land of Tahtim-hodshi,and came to Dan-jaan, and round about Zidon;7 and entered the fortress of Tyre, and all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites,and they went out to the South of Judah, even to Beer-sheba.8 So, when they had gone to and fro throughout all the land, they came, at the end of nine months and twenty days, unto Jerusalem.9 And Joab delivered up the sum of the number of the people, unto the king,and there were found to be, in Israel, eight hundred thousand men of valour, drawing the sword,and, the men of Judah, five hundred thousand men.10 And the heart of David smote him, after he had reckoned up the people,and David said unto YahwehI have sinned greatly, in what I have done, Now, therefore, O Yahweh, take away, I beseech thee, the iniquity of thy servant, for I have done very foolishly.11 And, when David arose in the morning, the word of Yahweh, had come unto Gad the prophet, the seer of David, saying:12 Go and speak unto DavidThus, saith Yahweh, Three things, do I offer thee,choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.13 So Gad came in unto David, and told him,and said to him: Shall there come unto thee seven years of famine in thy land? Or, for three months, wilt thou flee before thine enemies while, they, pursue thee? Or shall there be, for three days, pestilence in thy land? Now, consider and see, what, answer, I shall return to him that sent me.14 And David said unto GadI am in a great strait,let us fall, I pray thee, into the hand of Yahweh, for, manifold, are, his compassions, but, into the hand of man, let me not fall.15 So Yahweh sent forth a pestilence throughout Israel, from the morning even unto the time appointed,and there died of the people, from Dan even unto Beer-sheba, seventy thousand men.16 But, when the messenger stretched out his hand towards Jerusalem, to destroy it, then relented Yahweh as to the evil, and he said to the messenger who was destroying the peopleEnough! now, stay thy hand. And, the messenger of Yahweh, was by the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.17 Then said David unto Yahweh, when he saw the messenger who was smiting the people, yea he saidLo! I, have sinned, and, I, have done perversely, but what have, these sheep, done? Let thy hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against the house of my father!18 And Gad came unto David, on that day,and said unto himGo up, rear thou unto Yahweh an altar, in the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite.19 So David went up, according to the word of Gad, as Yahweh had commanded.20 And Araunah looked out, and saw the king, and his servants, passing over unto himso Araunah went forth, and did homage unto the king, with his face to the ground.21 Then said Araunah, Wherefore, hath my lord the king come unto his servant? And David saidTo buy of thee the threshing-floor, to build an altar unto Yahweh, that the plague may be stayed from off the people.22 Then said Araunah unto David, Let my lord the king accept it and cause to ascend what is good in his own eyes,see! the oxen for the ascending-sacrifice, and the threshing-sledges and ox-yokes for wood.23 The whole, did Araunah give, as a king to a king. And Araunah said unto the king, Yahweh thy God, accept thee!24 But the king said unto AraunahNay! but I will, buy, it of thee, for a price, and will not cause to ascend unto Yahweh my God, offerings that have cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing-floor, and the oxen, for fifty shekels of silver;25 and David built there an altar unto Yahweh, and caused to go up ascending-sacrifices and peace-offerings,then was Yahweh entreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.

1 E a ira do Senhor se tornou a acender contra Israel, e ele incitou a Davi contra eles, dizendo: Vai, numera a Israel e a Judá. 2 Disse, pois, o rei a Joabe, chefe do exército, o qual tinha consigo: Agora, rodeia por todas as tribos de Israel, desde Dã até Berseba, e numera o povo, para que eu saiba o número do povo. 3 Então, disse Joabe ao rei: Ora, multiplique o Senhor, teu Deus, a este povo cem vezes tanto quanto agora é, e os olhos do rei, meu senhor, o vejam; mas por que deseja o rei, meu senhor, este negócio? 4 Porém a palavra do rei prevaleceu contra Joabe e contra os chefes do exército. Joabe, pois, saiu com os chefes do exército diante da face do rei, a numerar o povo de Israel. 5 E passaram o Jordão e puseram-se em campo junto a Aroer, à direita da cidade que está no meio do ribeiro de Gade, e junto a Jazer. 6 E vieram a Gileade e à terra baixa de Cades; também vieram até Dã-Jaã e ao redor de Sidom. 7 E vieram à fortaleza de Tiro, e a todas as cidades dos heveus e dos cananeus, e saíram para a banda do sul de Judá, a Berseba. 8 Assim, rodearam por toda a terra e, ao cabo de nove meses e vinte dias, voltaram a Jerusalém. 9 E Joabe deu ao rei a soma do número do povo contado: havia em Israel oitocentos mil homens de guerra, que arrancavam espada; e os homens de Judá eram quinhentos mil homens.

10 E o coração doeu a Davi, depois de haver numerado o povo, e disse Davi ao Senhor: Muito pequei no que fiz; porém agora, ó Senhor, peço-te que traspasses a iniquidade do teu servo; porque tenho procedido mui loucamente. 11 Levantando-se, pois, Davi pela manhã, veio a palavra do Senhor ao profeta Gade, vidente de Davi, dizendo: 12 Vai e dize a Davi: Assim diz o Senhor: três coisas te ofereço; escolhe uma delas, para que ta faça. 13 Veio, pois, Gade a Davi e fez-lho saber; e disse-lhe: Queres que sete anos de fome te venham à tua terra; ou que por três meses fujas diante de teus inimigos, e eles te persigam; ou que por três dias haja peste na tua terra? Delibera, agora, e vê que resposta hei de dar ao que me enviou. 14 Então, disse Davi a Gade: Estou em grande angústia; porém caiamos nas mãos do Senhor, porque muitas são as suas misericórdias; mas nas mãos dos homens não caia eu.

15 Então, enviou o Senhor a peste a Israel, desde pela manhã até ao tempo determinado; e, desde Dã até Berseba, morreram setenta mil homens do povo. 16 Estendendo, pois, o Anjo a sua mão sobre Jerusalém, para a destruir, o Senhor se arrependeu daquele mal; e disse ao Anjo que fazia a destruição entre o povo: Basta, agora retira a tua mão. E o Anjo do Senhor estava junto à eira de Araúna, o jebuseu. 17 E, vendo Davi ao Anjo que feria o povo, falou ao Senhor e disse: Eis que eu sou o que pequei e eu o que iniquamente procedi; porém estas ovelhas que fizeram? Seja, pois, a tua mão contra mim e contra a casa de meu pai.

18 E Gade veio, naquele mesmo dia, a Davi e disse-lhe: Sobe, levanta ao Senhor um altar na eira de Araúna, o jebuseu. 19 Davi subiu conforme a palavra de Gade, como o Senhor lhe tinha ordenado. 20 E olhou Araúna e viu que vinham para ele o rei e os seus servos; saiu, pois, Araúna, e inclinou-se diante do rei com o rosto em terra. 21 E disse Araúna: Por que vem o rei, meu senhor, ao seu servo? E disse Davi: Para comprar de ti esta eira, a fim de edificar nela um altar ao Senhor, para que este castigo cesse de sobre o povo. 22 Então, disse Araúna a Davi: Tome e ofereça o rei, meu senhor, o que bem parecer aos seus olhos; eis aí bois para o holocausto, e os trilhos, e o aparelho dos bois para a lenha. 23 Tudo isso deu Araúna ao rei; disse mais Araúna ao rei: O Senhor, teu Deus, tome prazer em ti. 24 Porém o rei disse a Araúna: Não, porém por certo preço to comprarei, porque não oferecerei ao Senhor, meu Deus, holocaustos que me não custem nada. Assim, Davi comprou a eira e os bois por cinquenta siclos de prata. 25 E edificou ali Davi ao Senhor um altar e ofereceu holocaustos e ofertas pacíficas. Assim, o Senhor se aplacou para com a terra e cessou aquele castigo de sobre Israel.
